February 2024 update

Anna and Dorsett Golden started flowering about the 2nd week of February.

Just a hint of buds starting to come out of dormancy on Fujis

Pulled back old mulch, mixed a pound of sulfur and 2 pounds of 13-13-13 with manure and spread around trees.  Then covered with new mulch.

5 new trees coming from out of state in mid-march:

King David (2)
Wickson Crab
Williams pride
Ashmead kernel

So far, it's looking like I might get a handful of apples off the Anna and d golden this summer

Think about grafting....

My Grandfather was a genius at grafting fruit trees, and I don't suppose nut trees are that different.  He would graft the trees so there would be four kinds of apples, plums, cherries, peaches/nectarines on each tree...so with four trees he had 16 different fruits.  Even as a kid I thought that was cool.  I was only about 7 years old when he showed me how to do it, but while I always wanted to try it, I never have done it yet.

Going to wind up with a good crop on the Anna and Dorsett.  I count at least 10 clusters of 3 to 5 each on both trees

Thinned out some apples.  Dina is not amused

Some of the new trees are blooming and blossoming.  Could be the drastic climate change from NY to south Texas

They really seem to be ripening up fast.

Blech.   Caterpillars seem to love apple trees.

From what I was reading, I was expecting it to be around the middle of June before harvest on either the Anna or Dorsett Golden but seems like sooner is more likely.

Just so I remember, the one fuji only put out 1 cluster of flowers, about 1st week of April.  Other Fuji was slower to bloom and has not put out flowers at all.

Pink lady bloomed about the same time but has likewise not produced any blossoms.

Unsure if it's a lack of chill hours or what.  I'm curious to see what happens next spring.

If nothing happens after a few years, I might cut them and  graft new varieties onto the old rootstock.

Wasps, of all things.

As if I needed more reasons to hate them

Fujis blossoming a bit more.  No blossoms on the pink lady tho.

Sprayed everything with organocide 3 in 1.  Doesn't seem to do anything to the wasps, sadly.  I sprayed them directly as they were eating that apple.  Still kicking.

Should help with flies, moths, and mites tho

Harvested almost half.  Anna on left.  Dorsett Golden on right.

Not really sure what's causing those spots on the Anna's.

Next year I may get a little more aggressive spraying for bugs and disease.

Impressive, never would have thought apples could grow down here.

Congratulations!

Thanks.  Anna and Dorsett Golden will, for sure.

Don't know about the others.  Might take another year or two to find out

20 lbs of whole fruit made 5 or 6 qts of pressed juice.

1/2 tsp of pectic enzyme and 1.5 campden tablets now.  Will pitch probably some red star cotes de blanc yeast tomorrow evening.  Will take a gravity reading at that time as well.

I got high hopes...this is some of the best apple juice I think I've ever tasted.

I'm jealous... of both the trees and the military trucks in the background.

I mean, you're in France, right?   Plant some.  They really don't take up that much space and you're in a way better climate for it.

There are some French and English varieties I'd love to try but they'd never make any apples here and would struggle with this heat... we've had triple digit highs for a couple of weeks now.  This summer is shaping up to be another long scorcher.

I really had to go to some extraordinary measures to make this work at all.  Pretty much 100% of these trees water is coming from irrigation.  They simply wouldn't survive, otherwise.

Would love to help you with the army trucks.

I'll be back in Texas in October.  For good hopefully.   I've got 5 acres in hill Country. I Just need to get home and get after it.

I don't have any surplus military trucks though.  I always wanted my own 7-ton.  Once upon a time I probably could have gotten one, one piece at a time, Johnny Cash style.

Well, I know a guy who can help you out with an inexpensive deuce.

Hit me up when you're back if you want to think about spring planting some apples.   You get slightly more chill hours so you've got more options.
