Georgians,
Greetings from a former Georgian (go Braves, grew up in east Cobb for 15 years). Wife and I want to vacation in Savannah for a weekend. Are there any must sees? Never been there, but the wife and I love history and old architecture. We thoroughly enjoy St Augustine but have pretty much done all there is to do multiple times. Savannah isn't too much farther so we figured we should give it a shot. Also any help on good places to stay are appreciated. Thanks! ETA And are there any CCW restrictions on carrying in state parks or historical sites? |

I live here and these are some of my favorites for food.
http://www.vicsontheriver.com/pages/about.html has very nice food. Call for a reservation. It's balconies look out over River Street and the Savannah River Alligator Soul is great southern cuisine and almost everything is organic. Garibaldi's is one of my favorites. If you go, get the pan seared flounder. http://zunzis.com/ for lunch. Local 11 Ten is mediterranean food, Good fish dishes. Cool place with a roof top bar. its at the southern end of Forsyth Park. http://www.local11ten.com/ Bella's Cafe is an Intimate family run restaurant, with freshly made Italian food only 10 minutes from downtown. http://www.bellascafe.com/ http://www.leopoldsicecream.com/ if you like ice cream. Neat history too. Olde Pink House Restaurant Six Pence Pub for beer, and I recommend the Bangers & Mash Vinnie Van Go Go's for pizza and a beer. Sundae Cafe on Tybee Island has great food. Great place to go to dinner on Tybee. http://www.sundaecafe.com/ Henry's or J Christopher's for breakfast downtown. https://www.facebook.com/henrys28 http://www.jchristophers.com/ The Breakfast Club on Tybee for breakfast on Tybee. |

I just had Alligator Soul on Thursday for the first time with my lil lady. It was fantastic food! I had Elk, and she had one of the biggest steaks I've ever seen! Best $100 I've spent on food (yeah, it's not cheap!) |

Thanks guys. Anyone know if Ft Pulaski is open with the .gov shutdown? It says its run by NPS. I believe old Ft Jackson is privately funded and is along the same lines at Ft Pulaski if you're interest. They have a guide that shoots a cannon a couple times a day. |

I literally just got back. STAY AWAY from the RiverFront area. Its ghetto and dirty as hell. NOTHING down there is worth the trip.
Stay in the historic district. Yeah you will have to deal with the college kids and towny types, BUT it beautiful and theres alot of great sites. |

There was some sort of artist festival with food and kids activities. It is touristy. I would definitely not describe it as Ghetto. May be our perspectives are different. |

We spend time in Savannah/Tybee every year, and have never felt concerned about taking the whole family through the river street area for a day of shopping for little silly touristy things, or getting a nice meal and some fudge or pralines. It's pretty darn nice. The squares are a good walk around, and a good chance to check out some history. The trolley tours are actually good if you are a first time visitor, too. |

Yeah, there are plenty of decent restaurants and bars on River St and Bay St. Most of the ghetto places are on the western side of Savannah. OP, I just connected your avatar with your name lol. |

My wife and i went down to river front during the day and it was ok. dirty but thats expected with that many folks walking around. We saw the arts festival walked around, it was ok. Did not eat at any restaurants down there though so i cant attest for them. I am talking about the general cleanliness of the streets and surrounding areas.
Then we went to Paula Deems restaurant that evening. Left there around 9:30 pm and walked back down to the river front area to get a few drinks at Wet Willies. This time, after dark that is, we were probably in the 3% minority. The tourists crowd was gone and the night crowd had moved in. And it was rowdy. Loud. Dancing in streets and on the sidewalks. Singing. Screaming. Hooting and hollering. Just general congestion on the sidewalks and not a care in the world about allowing flow of people on the sidewalks to make their way through. My wife is very curvaceous. The NOT so gentlemen congregating on the streets made NO qualms about expressing their general interest in her in front of me and to my face. No fucks given by them at all. The general atmosphere of the place was that of Freaknik in Atlanta back in the 90's FSA in full force by definition. Now i am not sure if this is yalls definition of "GHETTO" or not. BUT is mine. |
. Thanks, off to do some reading.
