Hey all!
I am new here, and to AR's. I have done research to the best of my knowledge prior to purchasing anything, and most of it kept sending me to this forum. So I figured why not join the site I am interested in the M&P15T which is the 5.56, 1:7 twist, free floating quad rail with front and rear back up sights. I got the quote for $1,000.00 ; for the price it seems like a great rifle. The purpose of the rifle will be dual: Home defense (also have a Walther PPS40), and going to the range. What do you guys have to say? I did look at the RRA rifles, but the ones I was interested in came up as backorder. If you guys have any better suggestions, please speak up! As far as building one goes, I am taking baby steps here. First one: bought fully assembled. Second one: Buy lower and upper kit. Third one: Build from scratch. Thanks again for sharing your wisdom and tohughts, Cheers |
| RRA rifles are hard too get right now. but if you can find one i wouldnt hesitate to jump all over one. there fantastic AR'S. i dont care about all the mil spec talk, it's gonna shoot everything and keep shooting. fit and finish is superb also. there dead accurate too. but if you cant find one i would buy a complete upper BCM and build a lower its really easy from what i hear. $900 you can build that rifle mybe a tad more. |

Which model would you recommend? AR6721 Looks alright, I understand I'm paying for the quality as opposed to furniture, like the S&W. LE6920 is the popular model right now. The LE6920 is ~$1300. Although I agree it is far superior it also is out of my budget. I also stumbled upon the Bushmaster M4 .223 MOE for ~$1000. And I like the RRAs, but yeah in my small town there's no way to get a hold of one. MAtter of fact there's only one place that has the Tactical version of the M&P. I'm open to suggestions regardless |

Thats insane. Mine carries knives and i think BB's The two best shops have issues tho, one is a gun shop that has half/half customer service (Im talking about you get cussed at if you ask the person over the counter if you may look at something), and has no website. The other one (Dick's sporting goods) also have no online inventory, and have very short hours and cocky employees that think they are better than you. |

Where are you in AZ? If it's anywhere south of Phoenix I can point you towards some good deals withing your budget. Tucson. I'd be willing to go out of my way (Phoenix are) if they are open in the weekends or late, given that I am full time student and full time worker. |

What I don't understand given that I work retail, is why must they ridiculize anyone by demeaning them, when it is US who are working a low-paying job and can generally not afford to spend $1,000 on a toy. Bah, I'm ranting...point being, anyone who cannot be respectful does not deserve respect back. |

I would also recommend the Colt LE6920 M4 style 16" carbine, check out DSG Arms (TX) which is an AR15.com industry partner their price is only $995, out of stock as of now but have them send you a notification e-mail when back in stock soon.
Find yourself a willing local FFL dealer to receive the firearm and transfer it to you. Another Colt model that is in stock is the model 6720 Lightweight 16" carbine for $975 also from DSG Arms. The Colt lightweight model 6720 carbine is slightly lighter and if your wife shoots she would like it better than the heavier 6920 M4 carbine. My local Wally World have the Colt LE6920 M4 carbine for $1,097 (same price I paid for mine last April from my local gun shop), they also have Sig M400 and Windham Weaponry MPC (M4 style) carbines. http://dsgarms.com/ProductInfo/CO6920.aspx http://dsgarms.com/ProductInfo/COAR6720.aspx |

Thank you all for the recommendations. Altough I am pretty set on the S&W, I am also interested in good/better options. The only problem is, as I was stating previously, availability. If as one of you mentioned, Benson does have better options then I'm game. Call them they had the Colt don't know if it's still there been a few days since I been there 520-586-0742 |

Would you be interested in meeting up to go shooting soon? I may be getting something this weekend. -AZNemesis50 Thank you, I am familiar with that area, I go to Texas Roadhouse often. How are the prices? -Slanky Educate me for a second, how hard is it to assemble the complete lower to an upper? I would like to make sure I have the proper tools and skills. |
|
colt, bcm, dd pick one in your price range if you can. I hate to say it but online prices are a lot better when you consider 100$ for tax local. My rra is super accurate though. Build your own rifle if you want, super easy and you can get exactly what you want.
Assembling a lower is very easy. all you need is a 15-25$ AR15 wrench, small hammer, and punches. All the steps/tools are listed below so you can see that it's as easy as it sounds. Also there are 10min youtube videos showing the whole process. The upper can be a little harder and requires another few special tools and a vice block. But both are fairly simple if you're mechanically inclined. If you're asking how hard it is to attach a lower to a upper, well that's just about the easiest thing imaginable. push two pins with your fingers and that's it. Check youtube for "field stripping ar15" http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_4/226782_Assemble_your_own_LOWER__UPPER__FREE_FLOAT__TRIGGER__GAS_BLOCK___Step_by_step_instructions_.html |
|
Thanks for that. The place where I got the quote included %10 off, which is basically the tax. So it would round up to approx 900.
I do have quite a bit of choices with colt, and bcm...and if i can find one locally I'd love to go that route. I don't honestly feel like waiting for it. |
|
I'd go with an assembled lower and BCM upper, too. If you're good with your hands, I'd even recommend a stripped lower, a lower parts kit, and an assembled lower, that's how I did my first. Watched a youtube video on how to assemble the lower once right before I did it, took me about 10 minutes. To put the upper on the lower is LITERALLY two push pins.
Welcome to the AZHTF! Oh, and Tucson has a bunch of gun shops, don't limit yourself to two. |

No assembly required, just put the upper onto the lower and push in two pins with your fingers. |

I live by the Tucson Mall area, closer to Trader Joes. I've been to the Marksman (I & II), Murphys, Second Amendment, and thats about it I believe. The issue I'm having is timing, given that they usually don't open until I'm already at work or school. And are closed by the time I have finished. which ones do you recomend? ––DesertFox Thanks for the welcome. What do you currently own? What part of the state do you live in? ––52pickup I like the idea, and would not mind the assembly since I am pretty handy with tools and all. Where would be a good idea the purchase a built lower? And a recommendation as to what FFL would not charge me up the whazoo fior transfer? All, where do you recommend shooting the prospect AR? I may buy one today, and end up buuilding a second one soon |
There's nothing wrong with the M&P, much like there's nothing wrong with most other large manufacturer AR's. I still own several myself (Armalite, Bushmaster, etc), but I prefer my BCM and DD stuff. BCM just happens to be the better value IMO. If I could only have one I'd keep one of my BCM's over the others - deciding which one would be tough ![]() |
I agree that building one with better components price and quality-wise is a no brainer. And since its cheaper, I might be able to do it easier. At the moment I simply caught a break between bills and had enough saved up to go slightly more expensive, and yes... immediate gratification
I shall post pictures at the end of the day. I Leave for lunch in 50 minutes |

Purchased at US Autoweapons for the $1,300-ish pricetag. Since I'm a Member up at SGC, most of my shooting is done there; especially during the summer months. Casa Grande here. |

Guns & Western Artifacts, Cashbox Pawn(new and used). Black Weapon Armory is so-so. Quite a few more I can't think of right now.... |

Dude is getting overwhelmed with options now... You want a 1/7 twist rate? If so, all the options might not fit, some may be 1/8 or 1/9. M&P for $1K... you could put one together and maybe get something a little better for around the same.. give or take 10-30% depending.. and IF anything is even in stock at a better price.. Being new to it you might be better off just going with the M&P now and while you are owning/shooting that one acquire more knowledge about what you like/dislike and then apply that to your next rifle OR just make the component changes to the M&P IF there is even anything you would change at all, might not be. But if you are like many of us here.. you will find a reason down the road to acquire another....and another.... and some upgrades.... next thing you know.... BRD ![]() |
