Should be some good ideas above.

What I did, and looks nice, is I went down to Menards and purchased one of their in-stock kitchen counters.  Pre-laminated and ready to install.  Makes a great work surface and was pretty cheap, ~$4/ft as I recall.  I built some shelves below it out of 2x4's and particle board.  Looks nice (for a workbench) and definitely not ghetto.  

You could do like I did and build the support structure yourself, or purchase some of their in-stock base cabinets.  Would look nice without breaking the bank.
