[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Picture request: SxS SBS (Page 1 of 2)

Found an inexpensive side by side at the local shop the other day and it occurred to me that I could form 1 it and have my first SBS for ~$375 including the check to the DOJ. Anyone here done this? This will be a complete range toy and I'm going for an inexpensive build so I'll do the cutting myself and it doesn't have to be anything fancy...heck I may even engrave it myself . Was looking for pictures of different stock lengths if possible. Not sure if I'm going to keep it at the length that it currently is, take some off while still maintaining the ability to shoulder it, or go for something with a pistol grip only for complete unadulterated ridiculousness!
Basically, I'm just looking for ideas to see what other people have done. |

John E, that really came out beautifully! Can't recall the barrel length you picked, but I know it's shorter than mine –– 8"? Even shorter? I really love a 20-ga for one-handed shooting –– a 12 just isn't as much fun after a few rounds, while I can shoot the 20 all day. OTOH, I'm really tempted to chop down a 10-ga., or even an 8 ...

Thanks! The barrels are 8.5" with an OAL of 17".
As you said, it's easy to shoot Video |

THIS
FWIW, Bear's Bark is an incredible attention-getter at the range. Folks ignore my M16A1, suppressed Uzi, and other "tactical" toys, and are drawn to the SxS SBS. Where'd I get it? That's not legal, is it? etc. It's a chick magnet, too. The level of cool is way out of proportion to the cost of building it. Some day I really want to shoot a round of skeet –– or better yet, sporting clays –– with it. |

as far as utilitarian use goes, what's the effective small/furry critter killing range with that? As an Everglades hiking companion, I know it'll hold minute-of-rattlesnake with buckshot ... other than that, I have no idea. I haven't tried it with slugs yet, but I bet they would be perfect when you need to dispatch a wounded or cornered 500-pound wild pig. |

Now you guys have me scouring Gunbroker for cheap SxS shotguns and planning my next trip to the local shops to do the same. I hate all of you. ![]() One word of shopping advice: Stick to SxS with dual triggers or a single mechanical trigger. The inertial triggers don't always work 100% on the second shot when you remove the buttstock and whack the barrel under 12" or so –– the recoil pulse is very different. |

I want to know more about what all is required on the paperwork end. (for a dummy)
I have an old 20ga SXS that I don't use (haven't pulled the trigger in 10 years or better) and I have a sawzall This could be worth every penny and the trouble just to see the fudds at my club range wet themselves |

You will need to either file it as an individual - which requires photos, fingerprints, and a CLEO signoff –– or else create your own trust, LLC or corporation as the applicant filing the paperwork. Long but worthwhile how-to thread here: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=51&t=199905 Short-barrelled shotguns are the same as short-barrelled rifles as far as the paperwork aspect. Submit the application, supporting documentation and $200check to ATF, wait two to four months, and when it comes back approved, fire up the sawzall. |

Here's Mine
I did a lot of research and got a lot of help with mine. Here's some threads I created. Help Design My SBS Help with my awesome whippet style grip My finished SXS SBS I've since done the wood work for two others. I also have a kick ass leather holster custom made for it. |

You are all assholes. I have managed to ignore the temptation EVERY time Tony_k had posted pics of his. No I see all of these I'm screwed. Plus I'll have to wait a little while for all of you to stop scrounging gunbroker for cheap SXS's ![]() Hey, every one of those times you managed to ignore the temptation, someone else caved in, filed the Form 1 and started chopping. You had to know that some day they would all catch up to ya. |

Now to plan the build that ATF would likely put into the "crude manufacture" on their NFA reference website. I'm going to have Farris as my examiner according to the new chart so I should have plenty of time to decide on the minor details. |

I keep going back and forth on one of these. I think I want to do a 12, but I think a 20'l. Get both http://www.hunt101.com/data/547/Fuddscry2_017.jpg http://www.hunt101.com/data/547/Fuddscry2_018.jpg http://www.hunt101.com/data/547/Fuddscry2_016.jpg John E, those turned out beautifully! Glad I could help, and it's so sweet to see so many of my Bear's Bark's "children" out there. I may have to register as an Official Bad Influence.

You're a very bad man......very, very bad man I'm looking for another Stoeger to cut now, not sure what it will be other than short. |

Think: Smoothbore Vest-Pocket Derringer. Already have a Taurus Judge (Public Defender Polymer) Wouldn't a 2.5"-barrelled 12-gauge SxS be bigger? Or maybe just cut to the chase and go 10-gauge –– there are some nice Spanish 10-ga. SxS hosts out there for under $1k .... |

I've always wanted a sawed-off side-by-side but I can't find one for less than $500. What's a good, CHEAP one to get? There are only one or two production guns available, built on brand new guns, and yes, they list at more than $500. The cheapest way is to prowl the gun shows or shops and find a good used side-by-side –– you can find them for $150-$200 –– then file a Form 1 (Application to Make and Register an NFA Firearm), pay the $200 tax and, when you get the approved form back, cut it down to whatever you want. |

and yall need to stop. seriously. so 20 or 12? I'm not allergic to recoil, and I dont see this is an all day shooter, but manageability would be the key for me. |

It is stoudt, but not horrible. Like I said before, the Agulia mini shells are a real pleasure to shoot. Jk |

oh man, these are some REALLY nice guns! i've been thinking about doing this for awhile since i found out my dealer has a Century Arms Eusebio Arizaga for $120. would that be a good SBS project? I'm not familiar with those. You can do this to any shotgun that's in good shape, but remember that you're adding on the $200 NFA "making" tax, plus an additional investment of either time/labor or $$$ for the conversion itself. So IMHO it's wise to start with something that will last you, and that you'll be proud to own. Mine is built on a Stoeger Coach shotgun, and many of the other ones you see above in this thread were also built on Stoeger's. They are really well-built for the money –– about $325 new –– with quality parts, machining and bluing; the actions are tight and stay that way after a lot of use. HTH. |
