Id like to get a SAA in .357. Im thinking of getting a Uberti but Im wondering if anyone has any input on these and also places to look for them for sale.

Not to many on gunbroker or many other places Iv looked. There is one fore sale near by that is Colored case hardened for $476 OTD.

Without a doubt I would choose a Ruger New Vaquero over any other .357 caliber SSA.  You get a better looking gun, better quality gun and much better retained value.  The Ruger does cost a little more but you get a lot more in return.  I've got two Ruger New Vaquero's in .45LC that are fantastic guns and the only brand of SAA, other than Colt, I'll ever buy.

I know there are some good foreign SAA's out there but, IMO, the Rugers are better.

I too prefer the Ruger Vaquero over Uberti. I do realize that it is my opinion and only goes so far. The Uberti is closer to an original colt SAA then the new Vaquero but it also has some of the flaws of the older designs. I can fire any 357 load out of mine but I don't think that I can say the same for the Uberti. The Ruger uses pins rather then screws. With a bit of heavy use, the screws will loosen up on the Uberti. That was an issue with the original colts. The Ruger has a transfer system and you can open the loading gate with the hammer down. Also with the transfer, I can safely carry all six cambers loaded (More in a bit). On the Uberti, because it has the original design firing pin on the hammer, you need to half cock to load and the usual order is load one, skip one load four so that your on an empty chamber. The more part is yes, I know, you can load all six and bring the hammer to the first click, thanks anyway. I also like the wider sights on the Vaquero over the thinner ones on the Uberti. Lastly, I like the trigger pulls on my Vaqueros, very clean and crisp. I'm not knocking the Uberti, it's closer to the original Peacemaker and if thats what you prefer, great but you asked for a bit of input.

I have these set (filing the front sights) for POA, POI at 30' with 158 grain, 357s. I don't bother using 38's in my 357's as I reload so costs are negligible.

Another vote for the Vaquero.

I love the 357 as a cartridge but find them to be somewhat clumsy in a single action format

In a true Colt (or clone) the 45 colt or 44sp just has a way better ballance.Bigger holes in the cylinder and a thinner barrel wall shifts things around quite a bit as far as ballance and weight.

Keep in mind my first pistol was a 357 blackhawk that I put about a zillion rounds through but the first time I picked up a Colt in 45 Colt after owning the Ruger for a few years it was a mind blowing experience. I was just standing there saying this was what it is supposed to be all about!

Consider the big bores

Depends on what type of loads you want to shoot. If you want to shoot fire breathing death loads get a Ruger Blackhawk or Old Model Vaquero. The Uberti, New Vaquero, and original Colt SAA(including the New Frontier) can't handle stout loads. The Unerti is fine for 38special loads.

I want a 357 just for versitility. Ill probably be using mostly .38 to save money. It will be a novelty just to have.

I picked up a uberti cattleman base model on GB last year for $261 new, and I'm not sure I'd pay much more than that for it.  Its fun to shoot, but as mentioned the screws back out like no other.  Its fun to take out now and again, but if you were looking to put a lot of rounds through it I'd look for something a bit higher quality.

Would using locktite on the screws be a reasonable fix. I also prefer the color case hardening.

You may want to recheck your information. The new Vaquero in 357 can handle any 357 load. It's when you use 45 ( long (for those who prefer it) ) colt that the (old) Vaquero can handle higher pressures than the New Vaquero. Bigger frames on the originals. Never really cared for the old as much as the new. A bit more clumsy for me in comparing the two.

OP: You may want to try your hand at reloading. Any straight walled pistol cartridge like the 38 or 357 is very simple. I said I don't bother with 38's in my 357's as the costs are the same. You can power up and down the scale to your liking. There is a reloading section in Armory that you can ask questions on. Everyone there will go out of their way to help out. I did a couple write ups there that may get you interested in it:

First one is on 38 specials. Everything is the same for 357s, even the dies, just set at different heights:

This one is a sort of part B to it about wax bullets:

Thanks. I really do want to start reloading at some point but right now I dont have the time or space.

I did notice that Ruger makes conversions to work with 9mm but mostly what Iv read is that with the 9mm the bullets dont seal to the barrel because they are to small so the accuracy kind of sucks. Iv narrowed it down to:

Taylors Smoke Wagon Deluxe

Uberti El Patron

Cimarron thunderstorm

I thought you wanted a .357 mag?

I do. something that uses 9mm would have been awesome but I havent read very many good reviews about using the 9mm in the ruger.

I ended up ordering a El Patron from Able Ammo.

Wow, I looked at that El Patron it was $632!  I expected them to be cheaper.  It doesn't mention anything about a transfer bar safety so I'm assuming it has to be carried as a 5 shooter like the old Colts.  It's a nice looking gun but for that price I'll stick to Rugers.  Make sure you post a pic when you get it, it's ARFCOM policy...congrats on the new gun!

Found mine for $551 shipped from a dealer.

From what I read they are very true to the original design

I got an Uberti Hombre in 357 and absolutley love it.  Having said that, I had to loctite the screws... and now I "need" another but in 45LC...
