The free Brownells AR Build video series is the best on the Interwebz.

There are some bad amateur You Tube videos to be wary of.
The one posted above in this thread shows some bad technique, for example.

The problem I have with Brownells is that they assume you have basically every gunsmith tool on the planet. Before I start a project I like watching a bunch of youtube videos, and even the Brownells videos, to get a full range of ideas a techniques; even some of the amateur ones give you some better tricks for someone who may not have all the right tools for the job. I certainly wouldn't call Sootch videos "amateur" or "bad". The only thing I didn't like in his lower build was how he installed the bolt catch - that could lead to scratching your lower.

I've been paid to use tools since 1971, so I guess I'm a tool guy.
I like to use the correct tools for the job, even if I have to rent or borrow.

Any fool can put up a You Tube video and there are plenty of bad amateur AR Build videos there.
It only takes a few seconds to find them.
Sorry that you have a problem with the Brownells videos.....reference whatever floats your boat.

Watch a few videos and find a groove that you like.

I use a long needle nose pliers and a razor blade to get the pivot pin detent on top of the spring and hold it down with the razor  to get the pin started. Easy as pie. Thats really the hardest piece. I also use the press in method for the bolt catch and finger guard pins.
I also have a bunch of set screws for the rear take down pin and I tap the hole and cut a few coils off the spring and use a set screw so I can remove the buffer tubes without the springs going flying. Everything else is textbook installing.

Spikes already have the holes tapped in the rear for the takedown spring and for the do-it-yourself trigger mod. Every other brand I have seen needs to have the holes tapped.

Its not too dificult. Have some extra parts on hand. If this is your first build it most likely won't be your last. Now that prices are coming down its not a bad idea to have 1 or 2 extra lpk's laying around versus random spare parts for field repair kits.

Have fun.

Thanks everyone for the input.  I didn't have email notification enabled and spent the weekend at work.  Just had a chance to take a look.  I appreciate the knowledge and the input.
