Hi all,

I looked through the sticky thread here and barrel removal  doesn't seem to be very hard BUT I think I might have a problem.

Check out the photo below:

Note how the hole for the gas tube roll pin is not clean. That is actually metal it would appear that is sort of mushroomed over the hole. It almost looks like a kind of weld to seal the pin in. The barrel and FSB are original to each other. The barrel is a late 80s C MP chrome bore.

Has anyone ever seen that before? Also I'm guessing my only option is to drill it out and hopefully not fuck up the finish on the FSB so I don't have to get it refinished.

Thoughts?

Give it a tap. This pin is the easiest of all the AR's roll pins to remove. Just looks to be a little boogered up.

+1, tap it from the left side. It should come out.

You shouldnt need to remove the gas tube roll pin.  Just soak the FSP pins with oil for a few minutes and knock them out from left to right and pull it off along with the gas tube.

edit.  unless ur not wanting to strip the hole barrel down then just drive the rollpin home with a punch.

Hmm, well I'm currently up at college so the AR is at home and I can't look at it. I could really swear though that there is some serious metal over the roll pin, almost like it was fused in after being installed. I'll have to really eye ball it when I get home next weekend and see what can be done about it. I'm planning on getting my upper refinished so thats the motive for removing the barrel.

Thanks for the pointer on the tapping it out from the left, I didn't know that.

just leave the gas tube in the fsb. Pull it all off as one piece.

No problem,  Those pins are tappered and a good way to remember is that thay come out the same directon as the take down pins.

What brand is your AR?

It's often much easier to remove the gas tube than it is to remove the FSB. In fact if your plans don't require removing the FSB then removing the gas tube is the way to go.

What you see is just accumulated crud in the gas tube pin hole that will not be a problem.

ETA - It doesn't matter from which side you knock the gas tube* pin out.

*Bolded to clarify.

All mine are tappered and it looks like his has the tappered pins.

Gas tube pin is a roll pin....it is not tapered.

I would bet a dollar to a doughnut that is carbon on the outside of that pin

Hopefully it is just carbon. I'll make sure I post an update here when I get around to tackling this.

The rifle is mostly GI with an NDS retro lower.

Just use an 1/8th" drill bit and twist it in the hole by hand.  If you meet resistance (metal) just use a tap handle and remove the offending flash.

Make that a 1/16" drill bit. The pin size is actuually 5/64".
