Are they a problem and how hard would it be to replace it down the road? I was under the impression staking was done to prevent removal of the bolts. If the gas key is staked properly, would it be nearly imposible to remove?
I did a search but I could only search back 30 days. I did not find much. The reason I ask is because my LMT BCG (which has not arrived yet) may have a MIM staked gas key. I was not aware these were prone to cracking. |

Staking is to prevent the bolts from backing out themselves. You can still take the bolts out. I tapped the stakings out of the way the last time I had to do this.
I would definitly not settle for a MIM gas key.... I don't care what LMT says. If Bushmaster were trying to pull this shit, they wouldn't get away with it. |

I agree with you....Can you tell me an easy way to determine if mine is MIM or not? Also, If I do replace the gas key...can I just LocTite the new bolts in place. I don't know if I have the tools/knowledge to stake a new gas key. |
| I have heard that hopefully LMT is no longer using MIM gas keys, but I am not sure if that is true or not. If it were me I would either insist it did not have a MIM gas key when I ordered it, or if it came with one, I would call them and ask for a call tag (so I would not have to pay the return shipping) and insist it re replaced with a real steel gas key. I agree with an earlier poster/member and would not accept a bolt with an MIM gas key. I also agree if DPMS, Bushmaster, Stag and any other manufaturer started using MIM gas keys there would be heck to pay. I understand an MIM gas key wll have an identifying mark between the two gas key screws, a real steel key will have no mark between the screws. There was a picture if that mark posted on this site a while ago. Good luck and do not accept it if it has an MIM gas key, it's ypour money and your gun, possibly your life depending on what you do for work....<><....:) |
My LMT BCG, which I bought over the summer, does not appear to have a MIM key, or maybe they ground off the MIM marks . MIM parts have little round impressions on them- the impressions kind of resemble those seen on injection molded plastic articles. For those of you unaware, there have been several threads over the last 6 months or so where this topic/issue has been, shall I say, "vigorously" discussed.

| Here is one of the threads you might be interested in reading through. I received a LMT BCG with a MIM key before I saw any of this, so when I bought my BCM BCG I ordered a new gas key w/ hardware and figured since if was just for plinking I'll run it till there is a problem then replace it with the new key. |
