I am getting a new M4 carbine with a 16 in barrel.  My local range has a 100 yard high power range.  Range rules preclude shooting at targets placed closer than that.  My shooting experiences have primarily been bulls-eye shooting with a 6 o'clock hold and the sights adjusted to hit the x-ring of the standard NRA 100 yd. target SR-1C.  That would mean that the rounds would be about 3 1/4 in high to hit the x-ring.  So how does this equate to various AR15/M4 zeroes I see people discussing?  Or to put it another way this is fine for the conditions I stated, but how useful would it be off the target range?

Using M885 or M193, zero so that your POI is 1.6" above your POA at 100yds. That will give you a roughly +- 2" from 10 to 250 yards. Of course that will change with different loads, but it is considered the most useful battle zero. This is generally referred to as the 50/200 zero.(50yd/200M). Note this is a battle zero, not for hitting the x ring, well unless that x ring is at 50yards or 200 meters.
If you have 200meter range simply zero for 200M.

Thank you goes out to Molon for the graph.
