So far I have two mags that came with the DPMS, and I still need a few more. I was thinking two more 30's and one 20, and of course a bandolier with loaded stripper clips ready to go. Is this enough for a "grab and go" setup?
I guess what I am asking is how many rounds would be enough for a "grab and go" already loaded in the magazines? Thanks! E |

I think to know the exact number of mags someone is going to say

Only time you can have to many magazines is when you are swiming.

That's ENOUGH! Sly |

I will give you a honest answer.
You should have at a minimum of 20 mags per battle rifle. I would say at least 6 loaded. |
Wow! 87!!! Guess I beter break open the piggy bank hock.gif
20 is do-able... I guess I need to start buying them here and there E |
this is new to me but I like it
87 is nothing compared to what you can see here www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=17&t=247764 |

Sniff.... You guys make me SO PROUD!! I'm tearing up. |

Thin air? Magic formula? Guru recommendation? Source? |
Oh yeah, if you have to ask how many are enough -- you don't have enough.
In that case I better just buy a few cases until I start asking again |
You need to have at LEAST six ready to go.
I use the rule of 3x, If your loadout consists of 6 mags you should have at least 18 mags for that rifle. I have 9 in my loadout so I have at least 27. Buy as many as you can, you never know when the next ban will come. I currently have over 50 mags Heres about the best price going- www.44mag.com/ |
Yeah, been looking at getting some from 44mag, but they are out of stock of the ones I want hinking.gif |
The "rule of 3X" sounds reasonable with a further amount of mags, followers and springs for when the next Ban comes around.
I have somewhere around 75-80 thirty rounders and about 20 twenty rounders. That's not enough. What's the deal with 87???

Erik, Wasn't this the original question? :) :) |
I think I have 20 30's and 2 5's This is no where near enough mags.
What do you guys think about 40rd mags? I see alot of talk about 20's and 30's.
mags ready to go, we waiting for a Red Dawn type situation? lol I have 2 20's and 2 30's ready to fly myself.
Only if you can find a Sterling. At a cost of @$90.00+/- it's not worth it. I only use mine for 3-gun. |
30-rd mags can be a bit of a pain to shoot with in the prone position; the 40 rd mags would really suck. Plus you're only likely to find aftermarket crapola 40-rd mags. Stick with USGI mags; avoid plastic mags, avoid any steel mags but maybe the British or Singapore made ones... As for how many do you need? A lifetime's worth. I say at least 20 mags to use, and as many more as you can afford. You can always sell the excess when a ban is threatened and make some money if you feel you have too many. As for how many mags you want to have ready to go. I'd say at least 7, maybe 10. Depends on how much weight you can handle if you are going foot mobile. By the time you fire 10 30-rd mags worth, your barrel will be super hot, maybe cooking off rounds. That's per rifle of course. |
Just pick up a couple whenever you go to the gun shows. When you finally walk by a table and say to yourself, "I don't need anymore", then you have a enough.
Not red dawn... just the breakdown of society. We seem to be heading that way. |
I have a guy that wants to sell me 2 30rd mags for $17 including shipping, is this a good deal or no? I will attempt to find out who made them.
Depends on condition. If they were USGI, new, they cost about $10-13 new today. |
What is your recommendation then? I think most would agree with 20 as a minimum. If you must have a source, Boston T. Party |

I have a couple of hundred back at the house. In country I have 30..
As many as you can absolutely stuff, stash, or store. I have thirty 30 rounders and about seven or eight 20 rounders and it isn't nearly enough to satisfy my craving.
When you stop asking yourself if you have enough mags. Minimum? Whatever you want to make it. For the past 4 years I got by with 15 mags shared between 3 AR's and an M16. I recently bought 20 D&H + Magpul mags... I never felt "undergunned" with the 15 mags, and I don't feel overgunned with the 20 new mags + the original 15. Quite honestly I just wanted to hear you say that it's a made up number. Thanks. |

Those mags that are sealed up, Who makes 'em? How Much? Now I know where all the 30 rounders went during the ban |
IIRC, Q3131A took that pic from someone else's post. From what he's said... That wasn't near as many as he used to have during the ban. Something about selling em' off and buying a Kabota tractor... NOt that I pay attention to this site or nothing like that! Sly |
Correct. Not my mags. I had about 500 during the peak of the ban which I sold to a local gunstore back when I lived in VA. I took the profit and used it as a down payment on a farm tractor. I am slowly rebuilding my mag stash, but I still have less than 100. |

Add another 6 30 rounders. |
Don't forget those by HK - though they are a bit pricey. |
I just ordered 10 30 rounders even if they were on back order. $10 a piece is pretty darn good. |
i got about 25 mags now, and feel pretty comfortable with that #. If another ban looked likely, i'd order a huge pile of em (like a case), then slowly sell most of them off when the prices went nuts.
I thought like that in the early '90s. Bit me in the ass it did. I had been buying mags for about $6-7 NIW. As soon as there was even the hint of a ban, prices went up - to like $15ish. Then as the likelihood of a ban got greater, prices really went nuts. The same happened with Black Talon Ammo...when there was talk of a law against it, I bought up several cases of the stuff. People seemed unconcerned about it. Then BAM, Winchester stopped selling it to civvies, and the price doubled overnight. Literally overnight. I guess my point is this: don't wait til there is talk of a ban; prices will go up, and faster than you'd think. |

Robbie, I'm new to the AR-15 scene... but I have found that, when shooting prone (either from a bipod or from the Marine position), a 20 round mag is OK; a 30-round mag is almost too large. A 40 rounder would get in the way. Standing, sitting or kneeling, there isn't a problem. That said... determine your tactical needs... go from there. Personally I keep a 30 rounder loaded in the rifle (in condition 2), with another 30 rounder and two 20-rounders available. This is kept ready to "grab and go." I'm considering a magazine clamp, one that allows a couple of mags to be clamped together, and keep this loaded in my rifle. My inventory: 2 each 20 and 30 rounders, with an additional 30 and four 20's for the range. But I'm as susceptable to "mag fever" as anyone. |
