I'm in the mood to get a range toy that has a "thump" and have an authoritian "bark." Just a shits and giggle gun for once in a while when I'm "in that mood."
That being said, I'm waiting for a charging handle to arrive and I will have completed my AR15 pistol, in .223/5.56. It is an A2 with a 7.5" stainless barrel, and a Smith Vortex FH. I haven't shot any AR pistol before, but I've observed and been around the range when one is in use. I like the look on people's face when the AR pistol barks; but what about recoil wise? I know that recoil is relative to the shooter, but can anyone give me a sense of what kind of recoil to expect. On a side note, I'm also contemplating getting a .50AE Desert Eagle for the same reason. Which one would be "funner" - as in heavier recoil and louder. |
I may catch heck for this, but I feel the AR pistol responds significantly more to the various brake applications out there than a rifle would. The recoil is not bad in any case, but I switched out my Smith brake (non-Vortex) for an A2 this last weekend to check the difference in my 10.5 inch upper. Relativley speaking, the difference in recoil and noise was significant, to say the least. Right now I need to quit looking at pictures of the Noveske hider, as I am getting weaker and weaker by the day

If you want something that is pure fun, get a gas operated 45 ACP upper. No recoil, and more accurate than a handgun chambered in 45 ACP. ETA: Here is a link to the thread about the 45, gas operated, upper. |

I second the 7.62x39 vote. Huge flame ball super loud. Although on the recoil issue wasn't much to me. Have you considered a 12ga aow? I know the serbu super shorty packs some recoil and gets many looks at the range. I keep on seeing a 12g AOW at the local gunshow. I'm very tempted in going that direction. I finally got to function test my pistol. As expected, the recoil wasn't too different than from a regular rifle. I did notice that the pistol is significantly louder. I was expecting some "fireballs" but I guess the Smith Vortex was doing its job. I was expecting to get a lot of failure, but to my surprise, the pistol fired w/ no flaws. The ar pistol concept is growing on me each day. |

I don't own one, but have shot one a handful of times. They're always a "hit" at the range... in an indoor range, when I show up and start shooting one, about half of the people will soon leave because of two things: First, the noise. Once, right before I headed down to the range, I heard a guy telling the store owner that "I'm going to be the loudest f***** down there with these hot .44 handloads." The .50AE made it sound like a 9mm. Plugs AND muffs are in order if you're at an indoor range with it. Second, the "slap". Each time you shoot it, everyone to either side of you feels like they just got slapped in the face. The shooter, behind the gun, doesn't feel it. But others down the firing line won't like it. The recoil is heavy, but certainly manageable. It's not like the sharp snap of a palm-held .380, it's more like a huge, slow shove. You do, however, need a tight grip on them. |

Thanks for reminding me to get my rear in gear and get to work on my AR-308 pistol. After shooting my AR pistol, I was seriously thinking of trading it in for the .50 DE (I like the noise, but don't like the lack of recoil). The only thing that is stopping me is the availability of ammo. .223 is easier to find and buy then .50 AE. I guess I could try a .308 pistol instead. Should fit all of my requirements for my range toy: LOUD and SNAPPY; plus .308 should be easier to find too. |

If you want something with a bark, go for a 7.62x39 pistol. I don't think it's as bad as some make it. I have one, 8.25" barrel, AK, not AR if it makes any difference. It's my avatar. It does produce a big flash, but the noise isn't bad using a reg AK slant MD. |

Either will make you learn about loss |
