I you guys want upgraded AR-180's you need to start calling your Congress/Senators and let them know that you will not vote for them if they let this new anti-gun bill pass.  I think it's called HR 45.

It's worse than the last AWB and was introduced January 6, 2009.

I love the AR-18/180 and I think the 180B could be a great rifle, if they made a few tiny changes.
That lower needs to be metal, either forged aluminum or stamped steel.
Also, the square piece of steel that holds the recoil spring guide rods - It is much smaller on the 180B but the receiver is the same size. So, the 180B upper receive has a much looser fit. If I buy a 180B, I am going to get a machine shop to replace that square piece with one a little bigger.

True...I would be in line for 4 of them.

I would be too. Just read my sig.

that would raise the price of the rifle. it would cease to be the cheap yet high quality rifle that it is then. you might as well buy a gas piston ar15 if you want all those extra features and are willing to put up the money.

I would pay extra for the upgrades, and so would many others.

We don't want a Piston AR, we want an AR-180B that should have 2 basic upgrades that can't be manufactured by the aftermarket community. I can't order a stamped lower, and I can't order a chrome-lined barrel either. I could always replace the lower with an original AR-180, but it isn't cost effective & I have to mod USGI magazines.

An AR-180B with a chrome-lined barrel, a stamped lower, and the a factory folding stock would be a Sig 556 / Piston AR killer if its kept under $1,000 MSRP.

An AR-180B with a chrome-lined 1-7 barrel, metal-reinforced lower (to address the broken hinge issue), factory folder reminiscent of the original, and a picatinny rail on the top of the receiver, all in a package under $1,000 (and it CAN be done), would be a must-buy for me. It would definitely slaughter the competition, thanks to the massive price difference.

Sort of off topic but I hope I can get some ansers.  I just bought an AR-180b and I am looking for a good scope for it to shot at say 200 yards  Any recommendations?

Thanks

Here's mine:

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f367/teclaydon/TCs_AR180B.jpg

- 'ACE' skeleton buttstock (custom trimmed to my length of pull)
- standard AR-15 buffer tube (also custom trimmed to my length of pull)
- 'Troy Industries' folding BUIS (front and rear)
- 'Leupold' Prismatic 1x14mm scope (etched 'circle plex' reticle viewable even with illumination turned off [not a holosight or red-dot])
- standard Picatinny rail stock trimmed to size for the upper receiver and precisely matched to the rearward end of the upper rail on the quad-rail forestock (unless you look closely, it looks like a single uninterrupted rail running the length of the rifle between the front and rear BUIS)
- 'Midwest Industries' quad-rail forestock
- 'Tango Down' rail covers
- 'Yankee Hill Machine' Picatinny rail bipod mount (seen on the forward end of the forestock's lower rail)

During the process of disassembly, the factory iron sights - front and rear - were permanently removed, along with the factory scope mount base plate on the upper receiver. Where possible, metal components were parkerized, then the entire rifle's metalwork was refinished with baked KG GunKote (black).  In terms of surface colour and luster, the metal upper receiver now perfectly matches the synthetic lower receiver (based on their outward appearance, you can no longer tell that the two receiver sections are made of different materials).

- Terry.

I am in the process of doing the same thing to my 180B.  Where did you find the rail.  It seems to be an odd height to mount flush to the railed fore end.

If you could post more pictures that would be great!!!

Great job!

The rail was sourced and purchased from the gunsmith who did the work on the rifle (all of the mods you see were professionally done).  If I'm not mistaken, I think that he may have had to do a bit of milling to get the rail on the upper receiver to match up properly with the upper rail on the forestock ...and you're right, he did do a great job!

How did he attach the rail?  Did he drill and tap for set screws or use some other method?  If I may ask, how much did it end up costing you?

Thanks,

Thanks for the info.  I'm glad to see someone else going all the way with upgrading the AR180B.  Its too bad you can't get a factory version that way.

I have to say I'm impressed with the finished product, it looks better than I though it would.

Post more pics if you get a chance!!

Thanks again.

Josh,

Can the rifle be fired with the stock folded on that side of the rifle? Does that adapter attach to the existing hinge plate?

The rifle can be fired with the stock folded but the dust cover will require opening prior to folding the stock.
To install the adapter you remove the folding part of the original hinge by pulling the c-clip from the pivot pin, remove the pivot pin and hinge. Then bolt the adapter through the hole on the fixed plate at the rear of the receiver.

It is a new stock adapter from StormWerkz which came out today.
The new adapter accepts all Ar-15 stocks instead of just the carbine.
So anything from a standard issue butt to whatever the next new thing from Magpul will fit.

Here is my Sterling.  It's been stored away for awhile and I don't know much about the 180's.
Is this the original scope mount?  What does the original scope for this look like and can you still find them?

Thanks

That is one of the original scope mounts. That particular one is designed to accept any 1" tube rifle scope.
The other would be the one with the compact integral scope.

Thanks StormWerkz.
Just got back from the local NC Gunshow and actually saw another AR-180, it had a similar but slightly different
scope mount, likely the compact integral you refer to.  It had an Armalite 2.75 x 20mm scope with no
top section on the mount.   The mount was secured to the scope with 4 screws that went into the scope itself.
Of course he wouldn't sell me just the scope, dang.....
Did pick up a Rockola M1 Carbine, so I'm happy...

Thanks for your information.

Here's mine, just picked it up today, so it's basic, but that's kinda how i like it.
May go with night sights eventually, and just ordered the rail adaptor from StormWerkz.com last night.

Other than that I think she'll stay like she is and I'll spend my cash on mags and ammo.

Since this is supposed to be a picture thread.

I've made some modifications to my plain Jane Sterling. I purchased a scope mount from StormWerkz.com and added an NCStar Mark III scope. I wanted to add a rail to the front hand guards but wanted to keep the original hand guards unmodified so I purchased a new set of hand guards from Armalite. I purchased an 11" ncstar AR-15 weaver rail and mounted it on the bottom of the new hand guard. I used a dremel tool to grind down the ridges on the bottom of the hand guard so the rail mounts flush. The taper of the rail worked perfect to match the taper of the hand guard. I mounted a short rail on the other side of the top hand guard for a light but I think I've got enough room to mount it on the front of the bottom rail so I'll remove the short rail to keep a cleaner look. I still have to add the light and add a sling and I'll be done.

Well I have been asked by so many customers to sell my precious crank style handle I decided I had better start them in production.
Requires a 1/8" notch cut in the bolt carrier like the origina( 5 minute job with an 1/8" endmill)l. This is also a replacement for lost factory cranks.
Here is the final result-almost, the production will be blasted before parkerizing, I just tossed this one in the tank to get some pics.
What do you think?

Reconfigured, again, due to broken Armalite scope mount base. Quick detach base and rings allows use of fixed sights & return to zero. Oh, by the way, I did not have to cut down the return spring guide rods when I installed the Midwest Industries quad rail forend. Cool!

The rear mounting block of the forend had holes in it that the guide rods fit in to. It came like that so I tried it without cutting the ends and it shoots fine.

I never liked the side folder option and I think the under folder is "one sexy bitch" so I hack sawed the back of the receiver so it was flush.

I punched a hole through the receiver.  Found some odds and ends to hold the thing together and added the under folding AK stock.

I also punched a hole through the safety side to install a spring dent.

I will add better pictures when I get a chance.

I don't know whether Midwest Industries just started selling these with holes in the mounting block or not. Even the instructions I got stated to cut the guide rod ends before reinstalling them. Maybe someone else had modified the mounting block before I got it. Sure was a good idea though, either way.

That was my next question. If there were holes that just weren't deep enough I'd opt to modify a set of hand guards before I started cutting on my rifle.

If I wanted to install a flash hider onto my AR180B, to replicate the appearance of the original AR18 or AR180, would this be correct:

http://www.sogarmory.com/Product.aspx?ProductId=101351

"Product Description

Not to be confused with newer versions. This unit follows the original 1980's vortex design. Eliminates nearly 100% of the flash signature even on full auto. US MADE. Meets or exceeds Mil-spec"

Also, how long would the barrel have to be?
