Yeah, but no one buys a 180b to be a tack-driver.

I know mine is a tack driver, it has yet to disappoint me so far in the accuracy department.
On a good day as long as the ejector dont get to gummed up or my lower cracks again....
Id pit it against any other rifle of the same class, in my humble opinion it can out preform any Mini-14 or Ak and even most AR-15s Ive come across at the range.

I may be biased since my AR-180B is my only .223 rifle but if it wasn't for the vulnerable polymer lower id never hesitate to trust my life to my 180B but that little alkalies heal will always stick in my mind no matter how reinforced the replacement lower Armalite sent me may be.

they're cheaper, they have a gas piston system as oppose to the direct inpingement system on the ar15

sometimes i think of it as the ak47 of the ar family only they're accurate

direct impingement?

Pass the gas piston system please.....

I only know the gas piston system type of rifles, Ive never shot an AR15 enough to have to clean one.

I've worked on the 180b, the ak47.... I cant even imagine this direct impingement you speak of.
If I bought another .223 caliber rifle it will be either an Masada, XCR or just get a gas piston retrofit system for the AR15 . That don't mean I wont shoot that AR15... direct impingement in general as a recoil operating system just dont make much sense to me.

They were,,,,10-20 years ago.
but not so much any more. for all practical purposes a production grade barrel shoots about the same lined or not. modern chrome lining is only a couple ten-thousandths of an inch thick.

Can anyone who installed their MI handguards tell me if I need to trim down the springs as well as the guide rods?  I knocked the right amount of the guide rods but my action is not cycle fully.  So its basically a one shot wonder atm.

Does it pass this test?

14.2 FUNCTIONAL CHECK
1. Pull the charging handle (B-1) to the
rear and release it.
2. Place the safety (L-14) on “SAFE”.
Squeeze the trigger (L-9).
The hammer (L-16) should NOT fall.
3. Place the safety (L-14) on “FIRE”.
Squeeze the trigger (L-9) and hold it there.
The hammer (L-16) should fall.
Pull the charging handle (B-1)) to the rear and release it.
Then release the trigger. You should hear a click
as you release the trigger. Squeeze again; the
hammer should fall.
CALL ARMALITE AT (309) 944-6939 IF YOUR RIFLE FAILS EITHER TEST.

Dreadfulshadows,

Thanks for the help, after looking a little more closely at the fron sight base, I saw a gap which leads me to believe the gas system was not sealing properly.  I won't know until I go to the range, but I feel fairly certain that is the cause of my problem.

Thanks again.

Hey folks...
first post. Love what you all have done to your Bravo's. Hope to do some to mine in the future. Not settled on what to do yet-maybe too late already, considering DOS, obama, and other alpha bit agencies stopping shipments to Kanada.
Anyway, keep posting pics, I have a bib so I won't drool on my 'puter!

Seems to me that you misunderstood what I told you.  Not being very helpful means that I couldn't tell you everything you wanted to know.  What I tell you today may change tomorrow during the early development or engineering process.

We're looking into a sheet metal lower, picatinny upper receiver and a folding buttstock.  Our current 180B's now have a threaded flash hider.  The possible improvements haven't been decided on yet as we don't want to increase the price because of these improvements to the price of our M15's.  That would defeat the purpose of an inexpensive .223 option.

Our "attitude" is to develop innovative firearms.  This takes time and money so the process may seem slow but with the money we have tied up in this future investment, we want to make sure we've made all the right decisions.

that would raise the price of the rifle. it would cease to be the cheap yet high quality rifle that it is then. you might as well buy a gas piston ar15 if you want all those extra features and are willing to put up the money.personaly i think  the sig and those other rifles named though they are quality rifles are very over priced. i like  the bravo the way it is. like i said in an earlier post its like the ak47 of the ar family only its accurate, more accurate than most ar15s i might add and its caveman simple, reliable and cheap. a lot of people are so anxious to remove the muzzle break and install an ar15 style flash hider. i dont know why. looks i suppose. i like the muzzle break, its there for a reason other wise they would have left it plain like the postban era ar15 barrels.it aids in fire control and help reduce the felt recoil making the rifle  more accurate which if your outfiting it as a dmr is really a plus

Gotta lotta yada-yada goin' on here...!
Somebody requested more PIX!!!
I went back quite a few pages looking at the 'folder' posts/pix and then went surfing.
I really like this idea:

ACE SIDE-FOLDING BOOM TUBE

BRAVO / ACE BOOM TUBE EXTENDED

ONE thing I'd like to know is exactly what would be required to minimize the bbl. length and add an effective FS?
Another idea I had while studying this pic set was to wrap the forend and cheekpad with leather...that would be 'nice'.

I look into this 180B stuff every once in a while and think it's a pretty cool platform for a future project; maybe for the kids ––- uh-huh!
Portable; clean; light and simple.

As always, thanks for the guidance.

The free float forend is a custom job. The downside of that type is lack of access to the piston for cleaning. You just loosen the front sight and pull everything forward.
My sights are realigned by setting the receiver upside-down on a granite plate and when the ears on the front and rear sight are level I tighten them up. Works great.

That's probably gonna be a matter of luck to some degree. You can keep checking at http://e-gunparts.com/model.asp?idDept=15 once in a while, as they sometimes get different stuff in temporarily. You also might try talking to Armalite, as they had some old spares for a while, but I don't know if they still have any of that stuff. Other than that, just keep watching gunbroker and the EE, etc.

Or maybe you can find some way to repair it.

I would pay extra for the upgrades, and so would many others.

We don't want a Piston AR, we want an AR-180B that should have 2 basic upgrades that can't be manufactured by the aftermarket community. I can't order a stamped lower, and I can't order a chrome-lined barrel either. I could always replace the lower with an original AR-180, but it isn't cost effective & I have to mod USGI magazines.

An AR-180B with a chrome-lined barrel, a stamped lower, and the a factory folding stock would be a Sig 556 / Piston AR killer if its kept under $1,000 MSRP.

That won't work on an original '180.

Actually I do make stock adapters for the original Ar-180's now.

And how much did those cost ? I just watched one (180B) on Gunbroker go for $890.

Well that doesn't look much like an Ar-180B of which this thread is about.
I saw at least 3 180B's and a couple early 180's at our last gunshow.

I believe the B's were going for about $800 and the Sterlings were around $1100. I was on a mission to find some parts and didn't spend too much time looking at the guns.
