Can anyone recommend a site to purchase a decent 5.56 80% lower that is or can be cerakoted black?
If you build an AR with an 80 percent lower, can you safely bring it to the range or is it something police would harass you about? Any legal variances that people should know about when it comes to 80% lowers? |

If you're worried about police harassment, you can engrave your manufacturer info & a serial number on the side.
There's various arguments for and against selling or giving away guns that you have made personally. Some ARFCOMmers give them away as Christmas gifts. It's certainly clear you can give 80% receivers away as Christmas gifts. It's less clear if you can finish one & give it away. |

I went from FriendlyRam's position to I dunno. Let's not destroy OP's thread. He's not trying to give them away. |

As one of the other posters said, if you make one have it engraved with some information. You can google ATF's rules about serial numbers, etc.
Engravings are not required, however with the police today and their ignorance of the law you want to have it engraved just to avoid any unnecessary conversations...as well as unnecessary arrests and confiscations. Whatever website you go through, try and get a lower that has the rear lug cut because with 80%'s you can mess up here and there, but you definitely don't want to get sloppy where the rear lug is because that will effect your accuracy. If you don't have a mill, make sure your jig has holes for a drill press. Also, make sure you get a dremel or similar rotary tool and purchase a set of carbide bits off ebay to help you in hard to reach areas. |

Ares armor and sportsmans guide.
A lot of old guns don't have serial numbers and more yet don't have a manufacturers name, only a number. Be well versed in the law, maybe carry something you print out off the net. Maybe put a number on it just to quell suspicion. As far as ceracoating it, anything can be ceracoated. It will adhere better to a bead blasted surface. The stealth arms lowers from sportsmans guide have such a finsh. I think those stealth arms lowers are out of spec, but you can make 'em work. |

Ares Armor is your best bet on 80% lowers They are selling blemished for $35 You will probably never see the blemish.
You can send your 80% lower to someone to laser engrave, but that would cost more than the lower. Electro or chemical etching is a way to get a S/N on it. There are a couple of posts on how to do that -- in Build I think. Either is fairly easy. |
