Given the recent fallout in the Mk12 thread I propose to help keep that thread on topic we dedicate this thread for all the rifle builds inspired by the Mk12. Not close enough for the Mk12 thread? SPR thread doesn't feel like a fit? Post it here. Got a Mod Wormydog or a Mod Longbow? Got a mod 1 with a LaRue rail? Decided to go with a delta tube? Decided the Mk12 could do with some improvement? Post them here.

This is to give us a home for all of our close enough builds.

I'll start with this -
Poor picture, and it was only a temporary config but it'll be reborn with a 16" barrel and an AAC blackout as money allows.

This rifle has a mid-length 6.8 SPC barrel and likely will never end up with a clone friendly scope and rings. And further away from spec I think I may put a Spike's Dynacomp threaded for the Ops Inc 12th model on it.

I'll take better pictures as time allows.

This is very MK12 Mod0 inspired.  I chose a UBR stock to balance it out.  Added a MIAD grip, Tango Down stubby vfg, and Larue rings and bipod mount.

I'm toying the idea of making this into a Mod1 inspired build.  It's a CMMG 22, but it would look sweet once complete.

I was thinking a chopped barrel and a pri tube make it a Mod H...oh and bold the thread title. It is official you know.

I don't want to cut the barrel since I got it re-threaded for my Silencerco Sparrow.  It will stay 18".  It will be an OD green Mod1 without the Ops Inc brake

It's still sad that the atmosphere in the "Clone" thread necessitated a whole new thread. No reason IMO we need 3 threads for 1 type of rifle...

How about we start the official "Not a REAL Mk12" club? All exact clones will be discluded for being too spec

I can see it both ways, to be honest. Some of the rifles are just too far out to be included in the clone thread like my Delta build up there, whereas this build by FMJBT from the 'hide would possibly skate by but still ruffle some feathers. They're interesting builds and neither the SPR or Mk12 threads feel like a fit.  The builds that deviate are some of the more interesting ones to me.  Yours is especially nice. Love the ARMS#38.

I admit that this thread will be perceived as redundant, but I know there's several different people who have refrained from posting their builds in the clone thread for not being close enough, and it's a big board.

I honestly tried to get as close as possible with what I knew at the time I started it. Like I said, I only knew of 2 readily available barrels when I first built my rifle, I don't think Centurion or HCS were offering the Douglas barrels so I went with WOA. Hell, I just realized last night that my scope from a distance could pass for a Leupold, the illum is roughly in the right place. The turrets would give it away eventually, but it comes with better magnification range (3-12x, Mil-Mil, FFP) which would IMO be better suited for a barrel and ammo capable of shooting 750+ yards.

Then again, if you want to build a better rifle, build a suppressed 16" .308. It does everything the SPR does, but better. Makes both the Recce and the SPR platforms obselete. But that's not why I built a Mod 0...

I started a MK12 Mod 1 upper project.  I got as far as an ejection port door that a buddy gave me and a forward assist assembly .  I was about to drop a considerable amount of money on a Compass Lake MK12 barrel cut from a Bartlein blank, when my project took a big turn.  I decided to build it in 6.5 Grendel instead.  Unfortunately, I soon discovered that 6.5 barrels and bolts are currently impossible to find. Luckily, a member here contacted me and offered to sell a 24" barrel and bolt.  I will need to send it to Adco to have it cut down, but I don't know if I will have it recontoured for the Ops Inc brake (7.62 version) and collar or not.  Seems like a lot of expense for no real reason.  I've already decided that I can't bring myself to dropping almost $400 on a KAC RAS that hasn't been state of the art for many years now; it has been surpassed by newer designs that sell for half the price of the KAC.  Not sure which way this one will go yet...

I guess this build will now have a home in the post for misfit MK12s.

Just emailed Adco to get the ball rolling on the 22 Mod1 build.  I attempted to remove the FSB and it must have been set with cement.  I cannot for the life of me remove it.

'Inspired' …… I think that makes this thread a great stand alone. If you're inspired to build a precision 18in then it's all good.

In my case I decided on 18in since I have a 14.5 and a 20.

I've started with the barrel and here are some contenders …… so far:

My buddy is having great success with the Rainier Ultramatch barrel.  I used a DPMS on  this last build and if I can't get groups I like I'm planning on replacing it with the Ultramatch barrel.

It's coming, I swear.  Just don't have a place to paint it right now. But after the move it's definitely going to get coated.

Close guess, there's a Uromastyx in there.

where can I find the tube and top rail for a mk12'ish build?

also is there  a cheap alternative to teh ops inc muzzle brake/collar that has the same look?

Both the tube, and the top rail are available from PRi  ( Website)
The tube can often be found cheaper at distributors, but distributors seldom carry the top rail.

While at one time there were non-functioning low cost copies of the Ops Inc brake, that's pretty much a thing of the past leaving the original as the only readily available option.

That was my rifle. The tube was a YHM free float tube.

There is also a local AZ AR parts guy that is going to have a similar tube coming out. The company is called Battle Tested Equipment and his website is www.bte-usa.com. You can PM me for his email.

The red was used because dirt in Texas is very close to that color. I'll let it get worn in and maybe it will tone down a bit.

Looks great! I'm a big fan of the pine needle technique. Being in AZ I should have laid down the green and brown first and then khaki at the end. Instead I painted the whole thing khaki and then random OD and brown on top.

If you hound around, sometimes the PRI or Knight's FF tubes pop up on the EE, Gunbroker, etc. You never know when you might get a good deal on a used one. Were you more thinking Mod 0 or Mod 1, or just an interpretation of the SPR formula?

Thanks for the compliments. I have Refinishing Disease as well as BRD. A wood stock in my possession will eventually get refinished and I hear cans of Krylon and Rustoleum whispering to me in my sleep.

I was going for a Mod 0 look. I love the look of the PRI tube so I wanted a smooth tube with a rail running along the top. I may do a Mod or a Mod 0 at some point. I had to sell that one when money got tight a few year back. Right now I'm debating between another Mod Wannabe or other 18" next, but right now I'm leaning more towards a "Recce" inspired build with rifle or mid length gas system and a rifle length tube. I would probably go with a scope that's higher power than 1-4x though. I had a 1.5-4x Leupold Mk AR Mod 1 that was very nice so I'm leaning towards the 3-9x model.

Recce'd be the better choice IMO. Since the whole MK12 program came and went, I think it has become more obvious that there's no real need for an 18" barrel. The 16" Recce type rifle can do 90% of what the SPR can, is more compact, and can fill more roles more easily. A good 16" Douglas, Noveske, BCM, Black Hole, etc type barrel should easily give you a great 600+ yard gun if you sling 75/77 gr match ammo. If you really need to hit stuff out at 700+ yards, I'd grab a .308 of some sort, or a 6.5. I have a Mod 0 because the instant I saw it I had to have one. Realistically it's obsolete, there are better choices to fill that niche. That will probably be the only 18" AR I ever have, I don't do 3 Gun and from now on it's either an M16A1 clone or a 16" precision variant. But if you love the sexy look still, the "Mod Holland" is out there, which is basically a 16" Mod 0 with no ARMS top rail, no FSB, carbine lower, and a 12th model.

I'm pretty much sold on a 16" Recce, but passing on the low power variable scope for a mid power. I'm just debating carbine, mid or rifle length. Leaning towards mid to hide the gas block. I'll be using a smooth free float tube from Battle Tested Equipment. And wanting to use a 1-7 twist with a govt or heavy barrel.

This is how my rifle sits now:

The end goal will be go with a 10.5" Mk18 wannabe on my SBR'd lower, using that stock and Aimpoint. The tube will be used on the 16" upper and eventually a separate lower with a Magpul ACS stock.

MK12 inspired, however I wanted a precision rifle that would also be short enough to maneuver in tight spaces. I run a T1 on it for HD without the bipod. I've taken this Noveske Afghan barrel out to 300yds so far with very good results. My range will have 600 and, 1000 available next spring. I'm guessing 600 will be about max if I'm lucky?

I agree with Mike and Hunter, but I would love to see this setup with a 16" and FSP.

My build is in process.  I'm starting with a Noveske N4 light in 5.56. I will use the lower for both my current N4 carbine and the new 6.5 Grendel SPR upper. The lower consists of a Noveske receiver, Geiselle SSA-E trigger, and a B5 Sopmod stock. The SSA-E and Sopmod were recent additions with this build in mind.

For the upper, I've obtained a Satern barrel and bolt purchased used locally. The barrel is 24", SS, heavy profile, fluted to the gas block. Since 24" does not fit the SPR profile, I'm going to send it off to Adco to have them cut/thread/crown, enlarge the gas port, and bead blast the finish. I'm still undecided on the final length (thinking 19 to 19.5").

Other parts that I have obtained for the build include a PRI 14" carbon fiber free float handguard, a Badger low pro gas block, and a PSA blemished upper.

I still haven't decided on a muzzle device yet. I'm considering staying true to style for the MK12 and going with the Ops Inc brake and collar, but I don't really want to spend the money for the contouring needed for the collar install; especially when I don't plan on getting the suppressor. I might just go with the AAC single chamber brake because it won't add much length to the barrel.

No pics yet, but I'll be sure to take some during the build process.

Sounds like it's going to be a pretty neat rifle when you're done.  Looking forward to seeing it.
