Hello there, I am a first time poster and new to the gun scene. Anyways, I have a question, is the Smith and Wesson Military and Police 15 Tactical a good rifle to start with? Now if the answer is no, I wish it inquire what deems a rifle to be a good beginning rifle, and is there any possible to make one that is better for cheaper?

It is a good rifle. It isn't the best but it should give you trouble free operation. They had some issues with pmags dropping free on some of the early ones but that has long since been corrected. My 15T has a few thousand rounds through it.

Mine has functioned flawlessly, with all magazines used.

IMO S&W makes a fine AR. But there are far better options on the market for the same money or less. These are good times to be in the market for a rifle .

If I were buying my first AR and was planning on buying one off the shelf at my local gun shop, that one would be pretty high on my list. Welcome to the forum!

Welcome and you'll love the 15T just fine, I do Its a great rifle to start out with if you have your eye on it plus it already comes ready to customize. Seems like everyone who owns a S&W MP15 has nothing but good things to say, well except for the early models

I own a M&P Moe and my impression is that Smith&Wesson makes damn fine rifle.

I looked at the same gun in the store. I went with a stripped lower and a Del-Ton 16" M4 kit for alot less than one off the rack

I've fired in my own hands no less then five of the M&P rifles and not one has had any issues. My personal rifle has over 3000 rounds through it and nothing strange or negative about it. Two of witch were the Tactical versions.

go get one.

That is the plan. Though, the gun will make me pretty much broke. Ah, being a college students sucks sometimes. =/
By the way, thank you everyone who posted and those to come too.

Not in the same class...look at the specs/options that come on the M&P15T compared to a delton M4 kit build

If you get the S&W you won't regret it. Granted for the price there is a lot more competition out there, but my rifle has only had 2 malfunctions, both of which were user error and not any mechanical error of the rifle itself. As far as PMags not dropping free, all my p mags have fed and dropped w/ out any trouble.

My first AR was a MP15...it has been flawless.  It is a good model.  There are "better"(i.e.  more expensive) models, but for a first AR it is a good one and you are good to go.

What rifles that offer similar or better quality for the same or less money would you recommend?

I'm in roughly the same position as the original poster––what AR would you recommend I take a look at over the s&W?

S&W makes a very good AR. However, I agree that there are currently better deals out there (funny how fast things changed from this time last year). The link below is the best I know of right now:

hhhhmmmmmm...............

I did the M&P 15R for the 5.45 last year.  Great gun and no issues.

Personally, I wanted a factory gun since I'm not comfortable doing a full assembly yet.
Also didn't hurt that its S&W with a lifetime warranty.

AND........check out the S&W web site.  They have the "5 free" mag offer going again for 5.56 new purchases.  Till the end of May.

Impact Guns has the MOE version for ~$930 and free shipping.  Figure $75 savings for the 5 free mags 'cause you can't just have one.

If it goes down to around $900, I'm going to have to figure out how to restack the safe to make room.

That link has some good deals, but none come with the Troy rail and BUIS that are standard on the MP15T. Thats close to $400 worth of accessories that you won't have to buy later.

Yeah but the Spikes is much cheaper and I like customizing my rifles to the way I prefer so I'd rather spend the money that I save myself. For someone who wants the exact configuration of the M&P15T, it's probably worth it though. I was just giving out another option but buying a S&W is a great choice if that's what he OP wants.

I recently picked up a S&W M&P15.  Not the tactical model, but came with a quadrail and flip up rear sight.  (previous owner installed rail, not a factory rail)

I took it to the range for the first time yesterday.  I was really pleased with it and it preformed flawlessly.  I had 3 rifles to zero in since I did some scope swapping last week.  Because of this I only shot a few mags through it.  My first mag, including zeroing from a bore sight was amazing.  I zeroed at 50 yards, and all but 5 shots went in the 1.5" bullseye circle and 4 of them were me walking the sight in.  Needless to say there was a big hole in the center when I got through.  My other AR is a custom build, so I was unsure about how I would like the S&W, however after yesterday I am very impressed.  I don't think you can go wrong with the M&P15T, especially since it includes the Troy rail and flip up sights which are excellent.

I have had some experience with some buddies AR's including a couple Colts and Bushmasters.  I think the S&W is probably one of the best AR's in it's competitive price range.  It's worth the extra bucks v.s. a DPMS or other cheapo setup.

Best of luck!
