I have been looking at SPR's all day and decided to build one.  I fell in love with a mk 12 mod 0.  However the jarhead in me is now screaming at me to build a 308 clone like the USMC adopted.  (like the one the 4th Btn General is shooting in that picture)
my precision rifle is 308, however I have several AR's already and the needed mags, reloading stuff ect.

Help me decide, 5.56 or 308.  What would increase the price and difficulty in making a 308 version.

Has anyone made a 308 version? Input would be welcomed.

Pics?
Thanks

5.56, without question is the way to go.  AR-10s are great, but not for everyone. Extra cost, expensive mags, etc...

I agree with Mr. ADCO, almost all parts for .308 versions are more expensive due to less competition by manufacturers, and less selection of parts in general.  Everything is less expensive in 5.56/.223, and reliability, compatibility are rarely an issue as they can be with .308's

The 5.56 is just more fun IMO.

Hey MOS2111 Armorer!

Nothing wrong with a Devil Dog liking the Mod 0.

I'm halfway there on my own. Yes. Marines don't use the Mod 0 SPR.

I will admit. I keep looking at a SAM-R because of the Semper Fi factor. But tell me that Mod 0 doesn't look great!?!?!

I'll take the extra pound of weight from the Mod 1, to Mod 0.....

Especially after seeing this thing shoot!!!

WOW

MK11 MOD 0 DUDE...My AR-10s always get pulled out of the safe while the 15s sit, collecting dust...

How can you resist....?

And this is my favorite...

Use an Armalite as your base build and you will be GTG!!

while i can say that bigbore is the expert in this matter,

me personally feal that the diffrence is neglegable,

out the door for a precision ar10, you are looking at around 2200-2400 give or take a couple bucks.  As for the mk12mod 0 or 1 you looking at at least 2000

this is before you even get into optics
precision+AR= big bucks,
in the end the if your looking for a precision weapon especially at longer ranges, i would take a 7.62 over a 5.56 anyday, purly based on balisitcs,

the mags aree going to be the thing that raises the cost the most, 308 mags range from 25-40 depending on platform(armalite or dpms)

couple SPR'ish 7.62's one ar10, one LRTSASS from dpms

If you want to reach out, .308.  No, I won't volunteer to let Bigbore shoot at me at 600 with his SPR  The 5.56 will be cheaper to shoot though, and a bit less to build.

I have a Noveske Pacnor 21" .308 in stock I'm going to build for myself if I ever get the time.  My poor AR10 lower is sitting all alone in the safe

At first I thought I could resist the urge to build a Mk12 Mod0, but in the end I couldn't stop myself. After building it, I kick myself for not doing it sooner. I am in the process of building an AR-10 based Mk11, but I am glad I did the Mk12 Mod0 first because it is cheaper to shoot and I shoot it a ton. I don't shoot for precision, but I do want to hit what I am aiming at and this rifle does a very good job of nailing the 12"x10" steel at 600 yards. There is something very satisfying about watching the bullet splatter, then hearing the hit. Great fun.

My AR10 is my second most favorite rifle in the entire collection, falls behind my accurized AR15 used for varminting but only because the AR15 was my first custom not to mention first accurized rifle.

I want to confess that I have saved all of your Mk12 Mod 0 photos, and put them as my screensavers.

That is a gorgeous rifle. And those are some great background pics too. When I see it completed. I see my rifle like that. Except I wanna use Alaska for a backdrop someday....LOL
