I'm building another clone (M4A1 block 1). My first was a Mk12 mod 0. I took special care to try to keep everything as close to the original spec, which included building on a Colt upper. Up until starting my new clone build, I thought everything was hunky-dory. However, when comparing my new Colt upper I noticed a difference in the forging marks. Both uppers are "keyhole" forged uppers. Both uppers have a "C" to the left of the keyhole forge . However, the 1st upper "C" is raised, whereas the second "C" is stamped. The 1st upper seems to have a teflon coating that has chipped in places. When I took possession of it, I wondered about it, but with the reports of not exactly the best finish on Colt pieces (function over form though) I figured it may have just been a re-finished upper or just the way they made them. The second upper has more of an anodized finish. Now I'm beginning to wonder.
Did Colt make them both ways (raised C and stamped C)? And what about the finish? I'll see if I can get some pics up sometime. |

Colt made the C forge code marks both ways, earlier ones are raised then currently they're stamped, if I remember correctly the change probably happened after the AWB sunsetted (2004-2006).
I have a Colt 6721 upper made before 2005 with a raised forge marking and the raised forge mark splintered A (which is Anchor Harvey) all my newer carbines made after 2009 are stamped. Here's a tacked thread link with several pics of old and new Colt forge markings. http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_12/223495_Lower_Receiver_and_Mag_Floorplate_Rollmarks__Logos_and_Markings.html&page=13 |
