Im thinking on getting a gun safe. What is the average price for a good one? I want a heavy/solid/fireproof safe.

Also, I know they're heavy, but do people bolt them down anyways?

what he said, also check sam's club if you have a membership. if you don't hit up a friend.

also get something to regulate the humidity in your safe, if you don't you will regret it. i learned the hard way.

Remington makes a product you can get at your local gun store

I picked this up today at Sportsman's Warehouse as the last one on closeout at my local store:

www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=1&catalogId=1&langId=-1&categoryId=50602&productId=876957&qs=5686472-Google_Product_Submit

But I only paid $489 out the door

I looked later on line and saw a $599 price out there but did not read enough to see if that was an old price and availability or not.

Shop around there are deals to be had.

Do NOT get a $600 Wal-Mart or Sam's special if you are afraid of a burglar getting to spend at least 20 minutes in your house, using your own tools, to open it up.

Mine cost $2200 - about what you'd pay for a REAL good safe with heavy gauge steel, external hinges, proper lock mechanism, etc.

IBT "that is a locker not a safe" crowd.

I'm looking for one myself. I worry more about fire than theft personally. It's true, someone who knows what they are doing will get in to a safe that most of us could afford. However, most crooks are smash and grabbers and a safe bolted to the floor in a corner isn't their cup of tea.

The truth of it is that if it weren't for sentimental value that some of my guns have, that is what I have thousands of additional dollars of insurance on my guns for.

I am buying my first house tomorrow and safe shopping has been going on for months.

Oh and TAG.

You have not given enough information.

Any lock is just a timer...one must budget a certain amount of time to get past any barrier, including a lock or safe.

The time required is a factor of proper tools and appropriate skill. If one has the key or combination for the lock, it will obviouslytake less time.

Any barrier can be defeated, it's just a matter of time, tools, and skill. If someone with the appropriate amount of each, they WILL defeat the barrier (and get your goodies).

That being said, I'm more concerned with some smash-&-grab homie than I am that some professional will single me out as a target.

Unfortunately, I live in an apartment and can't bolt down the safe, so I had to go for sheer weight and thicker steel - 1700 lbs empty is what I finally settled on for my Graffunder. The guy installing it almost squished himself putting it in . Personally, the lowest I would go with would be one of the Amsec BF series - but like others have said, a safe only buys you time. If you have the tools and the time, you can get into any safe. Almost any safe bolted down in a confined space (e.g. closet to defend against prying attacks) will keep out the typical smash and grab jackasses, but a better safe will defend against punch attacks where brute force and leverage cannot be applied. None will keep out those with time and access to power saws and torches if they don't mind going thru the side of the safe and harming some of the contents.

Texas and their stupid anti-booby trap laws........ <grumble, grumble>.

I would love it for an attempted illicit entry to bring four plexiglass-type walls down, forming a watertight seal, and for it to then fill up with water or some sort of gas.

I have spent some time daydreaming about booby traps, but I always come back to the same conclusion - I'd probably be the booby

I will be building my own vault using a electro magnet and other "dirty tricks" to keep the goodies inside safe.

No matter what bolt to floor or wall.  If you can get even a little bit off the floor to get some small roller under it the next step is a larger roller and there it goes.

And even if not broken into by a hit and grabber, his pulling itover makes a real pain to get back up.
