But I made it interesting. In her defense, it was mainly getting the family ready to travel to a cooler climate over the Xmas holiday. However, she loves to shop and can easily get carried away. I went along to keep an eye on things, and have a little fun. First I did the traditional husband/boyfriend at the mall thing. I carried the quickly filling shopping bag, smiled a lot and muttered a few "that's nice" and "yes I like it". Once she got herself and the kids a new wardrobe, she thought she was was done. So I said, "my turn!" and proceeded to over stuff the bag with MY new wardrobe. She suddenly felt that it was going to cost way too much money, and we should put a few things back. Then she realized that I was being a smarta$$ about it. It pisses her off when I make my point this way. It is however, very effective. We put back the impulse items and got only what we felt we needed. Believe me, no one is going without. My daughter got 5 new shirts instead of 7. My son and I both got 2 pairs of shoes. The Mrs. got PJ's, perfume, shoes, etc. We didn't break the bank, because I was raised by very frugal grand parents. Garage sales, thrift stores, swap meets, I've seen them all. There were many times when I was embarrassed. But they taught me how to make money stretch, and to appreciate what we have, however much, or little it may be. I am happy to pass these traits to the kids, even though "mom" can be oblivious at times.
