I did try Nougat again recently, and was pleasantly surprised. The first time I tried it it seemed rather bland, but this time I feel like I noticed the flavors more though the second half of the bowl. I had deliberately slowed my cadence, which I think made a noticeable difference. Being able to experiment really is one of the best aspects of this hobby. |

From what I read the Mastro Beraldi pipes smoke very well. I don't think I'll ever smoke it, TBH; I am working on pipe stand that it will look nice in, but I ought to see about trading for a more traditional Savinelli or two. For those of you who like Pumpkin Spice, I used to make a mix of Sleepy Hollow Tobacco and from Straus Tobacconist and Northwoods from Boswell. The Northwoods latakia forward tobacco would tame the pumpkin sweetness in the Sleepy Hollow to give a nice blend of smokiness and pumpkin spice. It was perfect for Fall. You could press it together in a mold in a vice for a week, I saw that on a YouTube channel. |

asking the hive as I'd like to get into smoking a pipe. I tried some years ago but found the bowl would get so hot it was not possible to hold it there, had to hold it on the stem. This happened on the few pipes I bought. Granted, they were modestly priced and I also didn't know how to identify/buy a good pipe.... Help me out. Thanks btw, just jumped on this thread and didn't read through it so my answer might be in it already... |

I don't think it really gets noticeably hotter than briar but it may. The bowl getting hot is usually due to smoking it too fast. What I've found is that drier tobacco burns better and cooler than wetter tobacco, which needs more frequent puffing and needs to get hotter to maintain the burn. With drier tobacco, less frequent puffing is needed. |

A hot pipe is usually a sign that you're puffing too fast. A slow sipping cadence will usually avoid the heat of the bowl. That said, if you're smoking a bowl in the summer time and it's humid, your bowl will get hot because it cant dissipate the heat as well. I normally take shallow short draws of the pipe a few times a minute. IME, less is more. Enough draw to keep it lit, but not too much where you overheat the bowl or get tongue bite. I know folks that like to puff while working, but I find that if I keep the pipe in my mouth while i"m fiddling with my hands or the like, I actually smoke faster and harder. Slow shallow draws. Give it a try. |
