 Currently smoking some 'Autumn Evening' by Cornell & Diehl, in a pipe from Czech pipe maker Petr Pohludka. It's definitely one of my favorite aromatics, probably in the top 5 for me. I began the tobacco pipe journey about 5 years ago, and find it to be a wonderful pastime. I now have dozens of mason jars filled with various tobacco blends, and probably 20+ pipes. Having some Mallard in my Brebbia. Now that it’s dried to the proper consistency, I’m enjoying it a lot more. Not sure I’ll buy another tin as there are other Virginias I like more, but it’s certainly a contender if I’m ever in a shop and in a pinch.

| Nah. Put the lid back on and give it a couple days to re equalize. If it isn’t totally dried out, the internal moisture will help revive it. If it’s still too dry (won’t bend at all), sprinkle about 5-6 drops of water on the stack, close it, and give it a couple more days. |

I tried some Gawith Hoggarth Dark Birds Eye today, and would rate it at 3.6 Roentgen; not great, not terrible. The cut and feel of it reminded me more of RYO cigarette tobacco, and even though it felt fairly dry, it took quite a few tries to get it to stay lit. The description says it has Dark Fired Kentucky in it, but it wasn't as noticeable to me as it was in C&D Engine #113. It's not a bad tobacco by any means, but seemed a bit bland compared to smoky Latakia or spicy Perique blends. I'll try some more tomorrow in a different pipe after drying it out a bit, and see if that improves things any. |

The churchwarden is a much better pipe hands down, and I don't think the cob will ever compare to it. If you look at the draft hole in a cob pipe, it's usually well above the bottom of the bowl due to how the stem is inserted into the cob. I've read that some people will cement up the bottom of the pipe with cigar ash in order to fill those lower voids and raise the bottom up to match the draft hole, but I haven't tried it personally. I just accept that you'll never be able to smoke all the way to the bottom of the bowl like you would with a briar pipe. Where cheap cobs and wooden pipes shine is for someone who wants to try the hobby for the first time but doesn't want to spend more than $20, which can buy you a cob pipe and an ounce of tobacco, or for outdoor activities such as fishing, where you won't be quite so angry dropping a $15 pipe into the river as compared to a $150 pipe. Missouri Meerchaum also makes a few nice hardwood pipes, like the Ozark Mountain, that are also a great inexpensive starting point for beginners.  I have a few different cob and hardwood pipes from them, and I really should try cementing up the bottom to see if it makes a difference. |

I never liked the cobb pipes. I get that they are cheap, but I would suggest picking up a Savinelli or other Italian suitable briar pipe. Savinelli's accept balsa filters or you can put in the stem reducer if you dont want to use a filter. If you're a cigar smoker, I'd bypass the aromatics and go straight to English or Balkan blends, particularly ones that are Latakia forward. I've had the lines on my thumbnails since my early 20s and I'm 40 now, so I must be dying pretty slowly

I have way too many pipes and tins laying around the house, but I'll do my best to make good use of them. EMP and Nightcap always treat me right, but, lately, I've been crushing some Royal Yacht. Smooth virginias with a solid dose of nicotine is hard to fault. And it pairs up well with any beverage.

I've still got a couple of the ceramic neti pots stashed in a drawer. Being able to add a bit of pressure definitely helps but I'd still wake up with them all stopped up. Sinus rinses help immensely, especially after being outside in the dust or allergy season, but like everyone else in my family I think I get a sinus infection at least once per year. Not enough to warrant sinus surgery, but enough that I cut out most "mucus producing" foods, smoking a pipe or cigar, etc. and I try to flush daily during sinus season or anytime I think it may help. Instead of buying the Neilmed packets I use non-iodized purified sea alt, Alkalol (https://www.alkalolcompany.com/) and distilled water; I'll add a bit of betadine if I think I'm getting an infection or a cold. Now I just sit at my desk with an empty pipe in my mouth looking like an idiot. Side note- sinuses rinses have been used by ENTs (otorhinolaryngologists) pre and post surgery and for infections and there was/is clinical evidence it helped during covid too, but you'd never hear the media or that evil elf mention it (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7842245/). |

For example, a churchwarden like OP posted lets the smoke cool a bit before reaching your mouth, which can improve taste and reduce tongue bite. Straight pipes are often said to be less prone to condensation and gurgling, and are also easier to clean. Bent pipes, especially Oom Paul/Hungarian designs, tend to hang better from the mouth while clenching, though tend to be more prone to condensation and gurgling. Poker and other various "sitter" pipes have a flat bottom, making them easier to set down without needing a pipe stand, which is perfect for when you may frequently need both hands free, such as playing cards. Blowfish and tomato pipes tend to have larger diameter bowls, which make them comfortable to grip and less prone to getting too hot to hold. Bulldogs and Rhodesians always look cool, no further explanation necessary. Here are a few charts for illustration:  I personally am partial to bent pipes for two reasons; they tend to be easier to clench, and that's just what a traditional pipe looks like in my mind's eye. My next pipe will likely be the Savinelli Tortuga Oom Paul that I posted on the previous page, but I'm also constantly looking for the perfect Cherrywood shape, which has eluded me so far. This hobby really is just as bad as Black Rifle Disease.
