Will probably be in the same ballpark as Dr Strange Multiverse of Madness which is hardly a lofty target. About half of the box office (less outside of the US) goes to the studio so at the moment it hasn't quite paid for itself but it probably will (budget including marketing is about 375K). Compared to all the recent flops this is better but it used to be that a film need to make 3x from the box office to be considered successful. It is definitely not going to do that. For comparison, TopGun2 cost about 200m and had a box office of about 1.5b. That's the kind of ratio you need to be considered a proper success. Or Supergirl was about 350m with a box office of 124m. Compared to that, the Odyssey is a glorious success. |

It hasn't even been a month and the movie has hit $911 million. It also hasn't even opened up in all markets yet, including a forthcoming China release later this month. It's likely to be Nolan's best-selling movie of all time. https://variety.com/2026/film/box-office/the-odyssey-spiderman-biggest-box-office-weekend-history-1236825132/ Is Nolan still in full-blown panic mode? Is the movie still flopping? Is it still not breaking even? I'd love to hear GD's educated, informed opinions on this very important topic. |

We tried to go this weekend and the only seats left anywhere were like the very front row on the extreme right and left. But, I'm sure that was Shareblue or the Israelis or something planting agents in the seats to create buzz. |

China release is less important than you'd guess since the box office cut is so much smaller than other markets. (25% Vs 50% in Europe or 55% here) 900m means he's past the break even point now. That is much better than a bunch of movies have done recently but far from being a success. That this is Nolan's biggest selling movie isn't the accolade you think. To be as successful as Top Gun Maverick, just for example, it'd need to bring in 2.8b. It's not getting close to that. |

And, compared to the complete bullshit reality AI will be having people live in, that won't look so bad. The 2-2.5x theatrical needed to get even is known and was known before 2022. The fact that hollywood studios understate their costs to make movies was known before then, and I clearly gave the full range of "belive the ludicrious lie budget" up to "best guess" (600m to break even up to 1.2-1.6b if you look at what they've done and added things up). The costs have been being estimated by groups like issuu.com and those cost categories and ranges were known before 2022. Promo and advert costs and the like are known ranges. The post gave original source links. We have the sources and could literally estimate the costs on an abacus, or your hands, and you'd come to the same range of conclusions on estimated real costs without the ai. |

Comparing an R rated historical drama to a PG13 superhero movie is like comparing apples to bicycles. The Odyssey opening ranks 4th for all R rated films in history. The only property it did not beat was Deadpool—losing out to D2 by one million and losing to Deadpool by $10m. Deadpool and Wolverine is tops with $211 domestically. |

Wife and I watched it Friday night, it was playing in three different theaters with assigned seating and our theater was about 80% occupied. The others were even more crowded. The Trans played a relatively minor role and could have maybe pulled it off if she was portrayed as an adolescent, but did indeed seem like poor casting. Helen's role was even less prominent, she had a mere handful of lines. My wife didn't think Matt Damon was masculine enough for the role but otherwise enjoyed the movie. They kept it moving at a decent pace. Not intimately familiar with how faithful to original it is but I'd certainly watch it again. I didn't know that spiderman was such a hit and between those two movies that place was hopping. I haven't seen a movie theatre that crowded in decades. It looked like the old days when something like Star Wars or jaws came out. We had to park a block away from the theater. There were probably 50 people in line for concessions. |

Absolutely, I based 800m for break even on their claimed budget plus marketing numbers so it's a lowball for sure. Unrelated, Spiderman BND did 900m on its opening weekend. |

True and there’s skepticism over the marketing budget but at $900 million it’s believable breakeven has been reached or even if budget/marketing is higher it’s looking like it would still close out at least breaking even at the end of its run even excluding blu ray sales |

It looks like the Odyssey is going to break 1B at the box so it's fair to say it's probably paying for itself with the box office take. Far from a great success, although it's much better than the recent string of flops. |

I disliked lots of other things more. Making Odysseus a bitch, excusing Calypso drugging and raping him for years, having Helen and her half sister played by the same person was incredibly stupid (and lots of people didn't even realize they were two different people), corrupting Zeus's law to mean that people can show up at your home and take what they like and you can't do anything about it unless they physically attack you (I wonder what the message is there), making Odysseus tricking the Trojans such an egregious violation of Zeus's law that the fabric of civilization is unravelling but kidnapping a guy's wife while you're his guest is fine, the 7th century Danish longboat for the Argo (when there's already a replica of the Argo much closer) and so many more things. Add the gloomy colour grading, the terrible audio mix and the choppy editing (the latter two caused directly by the decision to film on IMAX) and it's a mess. Even the author of the super-woke translation he based it on hates it. |

Agree, the woke stuff was obviously a PT Barnum bit to get attention, but very minor in the film. If you are looking for an epic film about an epic tale and journey, stick with Ben Hur, Master and Commander or Raiders of the Lost Arc. If you haven't read the book or brushed up on the history, mythology/ religion, sequence of events, the structure of their government, this film does nothing to explain any of it. I really wanted this to be more, but it just isn't. |

Ithaca is the destination. The real drama is earning the right to inhabit his legendary identity again. Somehow I don't think this movie strikes that chord. |

To reiterate, you have to be out of your mind to think that this movie needs to be the bestselling R-rated movie of all time ($1.2-1.6 billion relative to Deadpool 3's $1.3 billion) to simply break even. Regardless of what AI slop says based on sources that weren't involved in the production, no one would have ever funded that, not even for Nolan. Please stop parroting that ridiculous stat. It's not real no matter how much it satisfies your confirmation bias. |

You can say that, but it doesn’t make what you say true. Reaching BO numbers like The Odyssey with an R rating is quite remarkable. Some of us have been a part of the industry for decades and know about these things. For instance some of us were discussing the rule of halves when looking at BO trends. This film has actually outperformed that rule by making over $120m in week one, $90m in week two, and $50m in week three. The production is hitting domestic targets. I would venture to say that week three was a big week in anticipation of SpiderMan opening that same week and sales beat their original projections—and will be the highest grossing film Nolan has ever made. |

Add the gloomy colour grading, the terrible audio mix and the choppy editing (the latter two caused directly by the decision to film on IMAX) and it's a mess. Even the author of the super-woke translation he based it on hates it. Just so you know, the Argo was used by Jason. The ship used by Odysseus did not have a name. However, if it were to have a name, he would have called it “Jenny” |

Hospitality is a prominent, recurring theme in the Odyssey. And in the Odyssey there wasn't much that Telemachus could have done about the situation because the suitors were nobles and their families would have killed him if he tried to forcibly evict them. |

Far from a great success, although it's much better than the recent string of flops. While I’m not a fan of this film, whether it’s the war in Iran, deciding on buying airline tickets to go surfing or looking at box office, I have to try and objectively view the situation whatever my personal opinion is. While there is a track record in Hollywood with later readjusting budget figures and I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if that happens with this film, it’s would strain credulity to think this film hasn’t or won’t achieve break even. But having said that, Captain Marvel made a billion and that ultimately didn’t mean Jack or shit in the long term. Is anyone in 2026 touting Captain Marvel or Brie Larson in 2026? Some films don’t make break even but years later gain a cult following and people show up at Comic Com having poured time and energy into making a costume from it. Brie Larson has sulked in every interview for years anytime she was asked about marvel movies despite being in a movie that made a billion. So there’s objective measuring of box office and there’s a bunch of other measures of movies based on expectations. Nolan imo has expectations of awards season and racking up Hollywood accolades and attaboys at the after parties Nolan won’t give a shit if blu ray sales suck but Universal probably will All these different expectations collide - the studios expectations, audience expectations, etc. and long term you figure out who’s expectations got met and who’s didn’t and whether the film gets added to the American Film Institute list |

While I think Nolan's work was a confusing mess in regard to Homer's intent. I DO have to admire AND question his psychotic decision to go 100% IMAX. SOOO much effort with an extremely heavy system on live outdoor sets with NO benefit in very low-light scenes. My only guess is he wanted to make that 100% claim. . . as a first. Probably to impress the Academy. At the end of the day, I'm happy the film is making money. Nolan is a grand Auteur. Not every work is going to please everyone, yet the dude gives one hell of an effort when he does. |

Spider Man is a different thing. There havent been any big Marvel movies in a while and Spider Man has a long pedigree like Batman or Superman of fans. |

Also, that it was the same brooding, broken protagonist that Nolan goes to in most of his films. So yeah, maybe. |
Or did George Soros buy 300 million worth of tickets, and its completely empty theaters, as I see retards on X saying
