You must choose.  But choose wisely, for as the true Odyssey will bring you life, a false one will take it from you...

That’s fair. I might be interested if it were called something else and “inspired by Homer”. As it sits now, I have no interest in seeing one of history’s greatest literary triumphs raped by race swapping (for no reason), trannies  (to push an agenda) and shitty writing (to push some sort of weird agenda or for whatever other reason).

The Odyssey is my favorite book.

There's absolutely no chance I'm going to watch this movie being that it's based on some angry lesbians absolutely terrible translation.

Ellen page and some ugly black chick are the icing on the cake as far as that goes.  Just terrible.

Nolan should feel bad.  The movie might overall be good but it could've been epic.  It should have been.  What a disappointment.

So, what this means is that Nolan made the Wilson translation even worse.  So worse, Wilson herself is embarrassed by the story Nolan created.

I've liked all of his movies that I've seen, very seriously doubt I will watch this. They seemed to take their BS a bit too far, even compared to other films doing similar things.

Saying the film was loosely based on The Odyssey is an understatement.

Most will never see it on IMAX.   They will, at best, see it on a large 4K OLED or = > $2K projectors.

Entirely on IMAX was an interesting and overexuberant choice for the camera verses something like a ARRI ALEXA 65.  The IMAX is several times more complicated and laborious to deal with and a LOT of the shots did not need such complication. Many of the scenes were VERY low light, so IMAX was a nonsensical choice.

I think it's a decent film, nothing close to >90% with any honest tally.

I give it a 75%.

Out of those 118 films I recall 11 are still discussed today out of the 118 listed so that’s 10%

I’ve personally noticed fewer threads about current films in GD and the ones that get posted, a lot have died at 1 or 2 pages if they weren’t controversial

People appear to be posting lire about AI destroying Hollywood than about 2026 movies

Which is why I’ve posted less often in them or in threads about films in general

Tron Area was my last film thread posted which I probably shouldn’t have bothered posting

From the 1988 list I recall these movies popular with the general public

Beetlejuice is on tv every October

Bloodsport is rerun on tv at least once a year going off the hotel cable I’ve had and referenced in other film and tv shows

Willow was on tv this month and I don’t mean the Disney Plus 2022 bad one

Crocodile Dundee 2 was on tv this month

Rambo 3 sucked imo but people still reference all the Rambo movies on YouTube

Took my Vietnamese girlfriend to see

Braddock: Missing in Action III

Which I regretted after but she said no Vietnamese was spoken during that movie

The Unbearable Lightness of being was huge back then with boomers like my Mom

Serpent and Rainbow was Wes Craven

Wasn’t Above the Law the Steven Seagalls gateway to Kelly Lebrock?

Johnny Be Good sucked imo but it was popular with high school crowd

Stand and Deliver gets brought up every time Hispanic film buffs try to pitch marketability of Hispanic stories to me like when I said Blue Beatle sucked arguing with Hispanic actors in Los Angeles so that film is forever in the minds of Los Angeles Hispanics

Off the top the only threads I recall posted in GD from this 5 month list were Mandolorian & Grogu, Project Hail Mary and Obessesion

I might know about films but I’m thinking more about what the general public rather than myself knows and responds

The Odyssey appears to have largest traction with women aged 26 to 34 and women 55 and older although ticket sales are around 50/50 split for gender with 76% of tickets reportedly sold to ages 26 and older both male or female

Variety reported 36% of Gen Z and 45% of Millennials made up recent audiobook listeners for Odyssey on Spotify but with no gender breakdown

Rambo 3 was better than Rambo 2, and introduced a generation of Americans to kokboru, or whatever they call it in Afghanistan. So, that was cool.

As for California Hispanics, their main problem is they fail to realize how niche they are. Their jokes, references, etc. don't play well in Latin America and they don't play well in the rest of the United States. They barely play within California. But, occasional breakthrough acts like. Cheech and Chong or movies like Stand and Deliver convince them otherwise. LA being how it is in thinking the world revolves around it, will do what it do. Blue Beetle had an almost identical vibe as the Ms Marvel Disney + series, and even Disney in its writing that horrible The Marvels movie knew better than to keep that level of pretension going.

It's a flop at telling the odyssey on the screen (hollywood, zero surprise there). The very idea that a hollywood movie can give you the story like a book can is a flop.

It's a flop to the people in hollywood in that it doesn't do "muh representation on screen" enough because the stunt casted aren't on screen much.

It's a flop net profit wise so far and needs anywhere from 700m to 1.6 bil to get to break even vs true production costs off of ticket sales.

It's not a flop in the sense of  "how well does it do the second week" because it didn't drop off a cliff and did better than expected.

IMO I'm fairly certain it is a flop in number of ticket sold so far because the "this is an imax event" will mean more expensive tickets and lower ticket sales. This was baked into the cake with an imax centric release.

It's a flop in the obnoxious harpy sounding feminist "translator" 's view in representing what she thinks the odyssey is.

For us, it's a flop, because if you read the big hollywood mags/sites that are inside industry types, they're taking it as a justification for continuing to be onoxiously leftist, racist, sexist, and all that stuff they genuinely are, and they'll keep trying to shove that in everyone's faces. So that whole thing won't slow down as it should have.

Seems that's about where things are at right now.

Added: you may or may not like it. Kind of a different subject.

The film is an odd dichotomy of elements.

First, it comes with the Nolan pedigree.  That grabs everyone's attention immediately

Second, he's doing what is considered in the top five fictional works in human history.

Third, the script deviates wildly from the original intent while keeping most of the characters and story loosely workable.

Aesthetically, he is indeed a master.  His choice of going 100% IMAX is close to psychotic.

But if you’re casting a black or any female for that matter, as Helen, she should be considered a beauty in her own right, before she was ever cast. Jada Pinket Smith, Beonce, Hailey Berry in her prime for example. The actress they used would likely be considered average by most black men.

My wife did make a point when we talked about it after the show. That a black woman might be considered “Exotic” like owning a lion or leopard? But to me it just didn’t work. But her scenes were not that long and glossed over by the story itself. It will make some money, but will most likely be soon forgotten.

According to Wilson, Nolan’s script lacks “psychological, emotional, political and ethical depth.”

“It has nothing convincing to say about time, memory, history, [or] war,” she wrote in an essay for the August 13, 2026, London Review of Books which was published on Monday, July 27. “I had hoped that Nolan’s affinity with these Homeric themes might push him to new creative heights, and enable him to conjure more believable characters. But The Odyssey features his usual combination of grandiosity and superficiality … the film’s vision is too confused, its characters too underdeveloped, to deliver what it half-promises in terms of big ideas – although it is very good at conveying big bangs and big giants.”

Wilson, a classical studies professor at the University of Pennsylvania, explained that Nolan’s big screen adaptation “lacks many of the elements that make the poem great.”

Despite Wilson’s criticism, the film, which hit theaters earlier this month, has become a massive blockbuster success and earned rave reviews from critics and moviegoers alike.

While speaking to Empire magazine in November 2025, Nolan revealed he took inspiration from Wilson’s translation, specifically the opening line of Homer‘s epic. Though Wilson was aware of the praise, she claimed, “I would be ashamed to have written any part of this script.”

Probably won’t be a flop

Breakeven is estimated at 750 to 800 million and it’s at 683 million worldwide now Spider Man this weekend will like take the wind out of its sails

There’s skepticism about what true marketing budget is but for now 750 to 800 is what is believed

I’ve heard some claims if it doesn’t reach a billion it’s a flop I guess it depends on expectations

Next week will provide better insight into the legs it has

Bear in mind Captain Marvel earned a billion but it didn’t launch much for Brie Larson

So you really can’t tell these things for awhile for many films

Some are obvious flops other were flops at the box office but later gained blu ray sales cult attraction

Exactly. I read it 40 something years ago and I went and listened to Ian McKellen's reading of it a couple of weeks ago.

The movie deviates wildly from the original Fagles translation.

It's not a great movie by any means, but was still enjoyable for the most part.

I'm a Lombardo fan, but am impressed with what I've seen from this supposedly "woke" Wilson text. I am in no rush to read the whole thing.

The people that cling to Fagles remind me of the KJV Bible types. They seem to want it to sound "old timey," even if at the expense of intelligibility or accuracy.

Wilson is working on a new translation that is a little wordier, she limited herself in the number of words to try to keep a closer feeling to the Greek but now feels that was a mistake since the languages are different and you need a few more words to properly convey things in English. At least that is what I took from an interview I recently heard.

There is a winsomeness to old, poetic, authoritative language.  What is sometimes called "old timey" is actually ancient and enduring. Not everything that is modern is superior.

"Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done" carries gravitas and strength.

Yeah, but theres a reason that after a reading from the Bible the Priest spends time to talk about it.  A good translation means its accessible and easy to understand for the masses.

Plus im not in college anymore, id prefer reading to be engaging and entertaining, rather than homework.  Theres quite alot of referencing the appendix and glossary when reading Homer, and it takes away from the story.
When the going gets tough, the tough go cyclic.

Well, the thing is, the boogie man (evil, satanic influence, democrats, liberal views, etc)  is already everywhere.  Pretending it doesn't exist doesn't help it go away.

We should be avoiding supporting the leftist beast, instead of feeding more dollars into it.  I strongly feel this is something all true conservatives ought to be doing as a lifelong behavior.

I've made a choice long ago to stop intentionally sending any of my after-tax dollars to any left-wing businesses or organizations.  This includes removing my voluntary support of businesses, movies and TV shows, streaming services, actors, politicians, websites, etc.  Even so far as not click on links to liberal websites, left-wing news sites or articles, or YouTube videos from brands like CNN.

Each action may be a small effect, but it is an effect, and completely legal.   Ignore and defund all woke causes.  Don't give them clicks, likes, dollars, or views, unless it's a negative review.   (However, many of these kinds of brands will censor and remove negative comments anyway)

Universal’s The Odyssey passed Oppenheimer‘s $330M lifetime cume in 13 days with a Wednesday take of $13.6M and running total of $334.2M. It took 7x Oscar winner Oppenheimer 595 days to final at $330M, and that was with Imax re-releases.

are you not entertained?

Some works, like the Bible, and even Homer, are to be read to better oneself, which requires growth and the work necessary to achieve it.  I don't want a classic work to be cheap and easy.  I want the full, undiluted version and I'll build myself to be able to stand up under it.

If we are unwilling to do the work necessary for growth, we must be content with our weakness.

No, It says something very important about Guests who mistreat the host and take advantage of hospitality. "you shall die, to a man"

We have a SEVERE problem with that in our country at this time.

"You people come to our country as guests, and now show contempt for our citizens and brazenly rob us of our wealth?  Odysseus has something to say about that."

That's what I thought after watching it.  He truncated so much of the story, there was absolutely no need for such length.  A good 45 minutes could have been chopped and not change Nolan's vision.

AGAIN, Nolan shot the ENTIRE project in IMAX!

That is SUCH an elephant in the room.

A system that needs a new film mag every THREE or FOUR MINUTES!

There's a mental illness hidden somewhere in the man.

Oh, and here's the reason why Nolan was dishonest with the script.  Modern sensibilities can't handle 32 centuries past.

Nolan finally admitted it..

I dunno.  I find Fagles to be more like Shakespeare.

It isn't that hard to make it make sense, but there's some background info missing (ie, you have to know a lot of the Gods and their meanings to know why they're being portrayed).

I like that it's challenging.

Having said that ... the movie **did** get the kids interested.  We're watching the Brad Pitt Troy this week (I know, I know.....).  Bought them the graphic novels by Hinds so they have a better understanding than just the movies.

If anyone has read Hinds, please lmk how well done they are.  I'm buying based on Google summaries.

What I hate most about this kind of shit is... it ruins the chances for anybody else to come along and make a good rendition of the story.

So does this mean Nolan is no longer in full blown panic mode? Or did George Soros buy 300 million worth of tickets, and its completely empty theaters, as I see retards on X saying

I'll probably watch it when it comes to streaming. My back does not do well sitting for 3 hours in a theater, no place has the fancy reclining seats around here and even though Im a big fan of Nolan's movies (interstellar being my favorite), this one just didn't appeal to me the same way. I would have much rather seen greek/european actors and not hear American accents, thats just kind of weird for this story and Im surprised he went that way. Im sure its still a good movie though.

Apparently, it needs to make almost 1.6B to break even, according to this thread, so Nolan would still be sad.
