Never really understood the point, still kinda don't other than for activities that don't require Kevlar.  But since I bought a PVS14 today, I'd like to get one so I have the option to wear it.

What's a solid, budget option for a bump helmet?

Thanks! ??

I just have a crye nightcap for my NVG needs.

If I didn’t have that I’d probably get a cheap airsoft knock off.

Maybe it’s because I’m not wearing my NVGs more than 2-3 hrs at a time, but I could never justify hundreds of dollars on a helmet that isn’t ballistic rated.

I really like my Team Wendy bump helmet. I primarily use it when rock climbing or hikes in steep scree fields that tent to have a lot of falling rock.   I have a Team Wendy ballistic helmet for shooting.

For a pvs 14 a nightcap is perfect. The battery pouch they sell for the rear helps if you need a counter weight. I also have a really expensive bump Helmet. It's better, but was probably not the best financial decision I've ever made. For something heavier like RNVGs the helmet starts to make more sense.

I have a Team Wendy carbon something. To be fair, it was given to me.

The Crye nightcap isn’t half bad for a monocular, you can stick it in a coat pocket.  I have one for my 14. The 1531’s are on the helmet.

I have a TW bump and also made my own boonie out of a Tracer Tactical harness.  Trouble with the harness is it doesn't adjust on the fly like a helmet with a boa system, so it's hard to share.  Otherwise I might prefer the boonie setup.  With a counterweight it handles duals great, and stows way better.

This if you don't want to pay full price. There's how to's out there on how to do up the cheap helmets. A helmet especially with attached ear protection is gonna be super stable with a single 14. Again with the hearing protection you don't have do peltors. There's how to's out there on how to use walkers or whatever with the different mounting methods.

When it comes to insisting on marginally better gear that cost 10× more than anything comparable and 5x what it should cost, that have differences in performance 98% of private end-users would never even notice, no community beats the NVG crowd.

My $80 votatu laser/illuminator/light does everything I need it to do, and at a 10th of the cost.

The gun community is generally bad about being gear snobs and poo pooing stuff that is adequate for most users.

The NVG world takes it to a whole new level.

It does what it is supposed to do. The adjustments are not very intuitive but work fine once you get the hang of them.

I have an Ops-Core with the 4D Tactical pads.

Weight pouch on the back is an airsoft brand because the name brand I wanted was perpetually out of stock for months.

I find it comfortable. My activities don’t tend to require Kevlar unless the hogs grow opposable thumbs suddenly or the stars start falling on my head. It weighs less so is less neck strain.

It is an actual bump helmet, as it does have a rating for… I think white water rafting or something, so it does offer some impact protection just not ballistic protection.

Being a bump, it also has air holes so it breathes somewhat decently.

I kinda want a cheap bump, also think buy a good one. Then I think a good one is almost as much as a Gavian(sp), HHV, etc high cut ballistic.

Name one riot/protest where you've seen even one guy wearing full kit with NV. Its a ridiculous LARP dream that gun owners have that they are actually going to be out using their equipment (or even fucking have it with them) when they really need it. Same with rated helmets. Do you realistically think you are going to find yourself in a situation where you are being shot at while ouit playing boy soldier with your toys? No. But but but.... Any excuse to spend money.

Now this is coming from a guy that probably has more in thermals and NV than many people have in guns. I still dont have a kevlar helmet because reality.

I wish I could find an old school 90s skateboard helmet or whatever that used to be just a plastic shell with 1/2" of form fitting foam, before every helmet-shaped-object required ridiculous amounts of suspension or loft or whatever makes them 2x bigger than they used to be.

I have a big ass head.  I don't want a big ass helmet that's DOT/OSHA approved, I just want a rigid skull cap.

Even the ones they used in Blackhawk Down are probably modern and oversized, but it's the closest I can find an image of.

You can get ratchet strap mounts although when I tried using it on a bike helmet it didnt work. Geometry of the helmet was way off to get the NV where it needed to be in front of my eyes. I didnt want to mess around trying half a dozen different bike helmets so I just bought an Airosft bump for 60 bucks and upgraded the pads. Works a charm.

I tried.  I ordered a few.  They're all fucking HUGE these days.  That's my point, is I can't find an old school shell that's just 1/2" larger than your head, they're all 1" or more.  ETA: I mean I get why, no one wants to sell a helmet that will get them sued.  I just think the NV gear people are missing the boat with these skull caps and other soft contraptions.  A rigid shell that is minimally larger than the skull it's going on is going to be significantly more stable of a platform to mount NODS on than anything made of fabric and webbing, significantly lighter than ACH mimic bump helmets, and look less like I'm larping when I'm just trying to smoke some 'yotes.
