We are allowed to own guns. Yes it's a ton of paperwork and a 3-6 month wait but we can. Sports shooting (clays, IPSC, IDPA and many others are popular here.)
We can also leave the country, temporarily and permanently, believe it or it, without having to leave your last born at customs to make sure you return. IIRC around $10k is a SA citizen's annual forex allowance before there are tax implications. We are also able to take movable assets and larger sums of cash out but again, there can be tax implications. Leaving is not the issue, legally being accepted in another country and being able to live and work there is. |

They can't leave not without major restrictions, they can't take any large sum of money with them. What you need to keep in mind is that SA was relatively sparsely populated for much of its history and the "racial tension" we're seeing is a fairly recent problem caused by importing labor from abroad. I put racial tension in quotes because it really isn't about white vs black at all. The blacks now controlling SA are not the blacks indigenous to SA who are in the same predicament as the whites. Imagine if the US in the 1800s imported so many Chinese coolies that they displaced the European settlers and Indians in only a few generations. Sure the Chinese and Indians are distant Asian cousins, but they're not the same. Obviously this is a very simplified explanation for a complex situation, but it gives you an idea. |
