If you ask Sgt. Robert Flak, he’ll tell you it’s not fair that infantrymen who’ve earned the Combat Infantryman Badge and Expert Infantryman Badge are not allowed to wear both awards at the same time — and he’s not even a grunt.

“I was always around the infantry, and I’d hear them talking about how they had to pick between the EIB and the CIB, and … they never get passing recognition from their peers or subordinates or superiors,” said Flak, a human resources specialist. “I thought, ‘this is not fair,’ but they said, ‘this is how it is.’”

But Flak feels so strongly about it that he has designed a new badge that would represent both infantry awards, and he’s actively spreading the word about the award, talking to anybody who will listen. He’s even pitched a written proposal to senior Army leaders, including Sergeant Major of the Army Dan Dailey.

“You go to combat, you survive, you’re proven combat effective, then you take the EIB training. Why isn’t there a program or a badge or something that provides you that instant dual recognition?” Flak said. “[Infantrymen] deserve it. It’s not fair for what they’ve done and who they are.”

You got that backwards. The CIB is an attendance award.  Plenty of Joes that never heard a shot fired in anger sport the CIB these days. The EIB means you know your shit.  At least that's how it was when I was 11B.  And yes, I have an EIB

And yes, I have an EIB.  (And a EFMB.  And a CMB )

Been cadre for both EIB and EFMB.  They are both similar, in that to get a go, you have to do it the way it is specified.  Not necessarily the right or best way.  I will say that both show you do in fact almost certainly have some good attention to detail.

Personally, I'd be a bit indifferent to the badge, if I was still in.  That shit doesn't do much besides show some flair to people that don't know you.  If you are a stud without an EIB or a tab, people in your unit know it.  If you are a shitbag with every badge and tab around, people know that too.

Neither the woman being pinned nor the person pinning are wearing US rank insignia or uniforms and both look Asian. From what I have seen working with many Koreans they are some pretty squared away cats  regardless of gender. I haven't met many people that work harder or are more dedicated.

So two US mil women earned an EIB? Stop the presses that's like 0.00000000001 percent of women in the country. May I ask when you received your EIB and CIB?

then you didn't earn your CIB.

There are some lame ass CIBs out there, unquestionably.
But if you were in a real combat situation, there is no comparison.

Ones a driver's license.  The other is a learner's permit.

To me, EIB says you know your job but the CIB says you did your job.

25th ID ran a course that had less than 1/3 rd of  HA NG inf bn pass at the same time NTC ran one with 75% of B co 184 Inf Bn being awarded in 1999. Contact respective PAOs if you care to dispute that info. So.....say wut now?

I just wanted to make sure you weren't some basement dweller talking out of his ass with no actual knowledge of the subject matter. Sadly I'm sure that earning an EIB in  2016 is probably not what it was in 1999 or even the early 2000's for that matter.

Meh, never saw much merit in EIB.  It's an award for knowing how to do and being able to do your job.  Isn't that what your job is about?  You knowing it and doing it?

were less than 20 in the whole regiment.  One year only
seven.

I earned an EIB in 1993, it was not an easy task by any means, neither was the EFMB. The CIB is an attendance award, but is still the most sought after combat award by 11 Bravos. There are a lot bullshit CIB's out there but there aren't any bullshit EIB's out there that I am aware of. I have been a grader for both EFMB and EIB and I didn't give that shit away. I wore my EIB.

I think the new design it has merit. I look forward to seeing the outcome and would like to know if it can be awarded retroactive to holders of both awards. I wonder if they can apply the new idea to the CMB and EFMB too. It would be interesting to see who else has all four.

There's 1 standard but many intrepretations so there's people who earned awards, badges etc and those basically given an attendance decoration. The sad spectacle that Pres. Obama's DoD has made of our warfighters means standards won't be lowered just "changed". The hollowing of .Mil will need a post Vietnam Reagan era rebuild in the next 10 years if another major war doesn't require it much faster.

All too aware...the few friends I have that are still in report really sad things. I now work for a construction company that did some work on Sand Hill about two years ago and every trip I made out there was surreal. Both for the trip down memory lane and how different it was from 2003 when I passed through there.....

ETA: the sandpits are gone, privates walk everywhere, and not once in all my trips did I see anyone being smoked, I would see platoons of privates sitting around eating chow like it was fun time. Even in '03 we had to set up a perimeter and pull 50% security during chow.....

When ever I go to Fort Sam Houston, it looks like "everyone gets a metal" type of event. I respect those who have served; hell I even served too and get to drink beer at the VFW.  This whole special set of wings or badge thing is getting out of hand. Just about very E nothing in the air force has some sort of wings and a row of ribbons.

In 68/69 I got a CMB
By virtue of attending some bs school for replacements everybody got an 11B secondary mos.
Every remf that typed in finance or supply got a CIB for doing perimeter duty.
I never wore my CIB.

I ran into an old guy with a cib belt buckle the other day. From his answers to basic question, year, unit, job, I figured poser. After he left another guy told me he was driver for Batt staff at Camp Evens and never left the wire.

Even my wife doesnt know what I did, why should I tell strangers.

No they just get rid of the stupid stuff like bayonets and MK19s, and use that time for important stuff like SHARP, uniforms and resilience.
