So it looks like they are coming out with a mix of 8.1 and 7.

From what i can tell it will have the speed of 8.1, with the function of 7. I think i might actually like it

I'm not touching it for years after it comes out. Windows 8 has been a huge nightmare, and has had terrible driver issues, and when updating to 8.1 I had even more issues.

Inspires confidence when they announced the skipped 9  because they had issues with programs interpreting it as windows 95 or 98.

It's being offered as a free upgrade to Win 7 and 8 users - but only during the first year after it launches.

That's not Microsoft's fault.  That's the fault of shitty programmers who looked at the product name instead of the version number.

Ugh. How hard is this to understand? It's free to upgrade if you do it in the first year. If you are on 7/8 and want to upgrade to 10 after the first year you'll have to buy it.

http://www.pcgamer.com/microsoft-windows-10-will-not-be-sold-as-a-subscription/

At its press event today, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8 users during its first year of availability. There was some confusion, however, when Microsoft's Terry Myerson started talking about Windows 10 "as a service." Did that mean that after that first year of free availability, Windows 10 would cost an annual fee? I asked Myerson for clarification after the presentation, and he confirmed that there will be no additional fees attached to Windows 10, whenever you buy it.

Windows 10 subscription pricing?

Microsoft has yet to reveal the pricing structure for Windows 10, but all the speculation out there seems to point to something completely different from the way that Microsoft has sold Windows in the past. The one rumor that seems to carry the most weight is a subscription model similar to what Microsoft has already set up for Office 365.

Instead of buying Office 365, you essentially rent it by the month or by the year. You install the Office package and run the actual applications on your system, just like in the past. The only difference is how you pay for it. Instead of forking out a big bundle of cash up front, you pay as you go.

You can rent a single copy of Office 365, called the Personal package, for $6.99 a month or $69.99 for a year. You can rent five copies of Office 365, called the Home package, for $9.99 a month or $99.99 for a year. The only requirement is that you get online at least once every 30 days in order for Office to call home and verify your subscription. Other than that, Office 365 looks and feels exactly like Office 2013.

So, if we were to take this pricing model and apply it to Windows 10, what would it look like?

Let's start by using the price of Office 2013 Professional vs. the price of Office 365 Personal as a base. We'll use Office 2013 Professional, since it comes with the same set of applications as Office 365. Office 2013 Professional currently costs $399.99 and Office 365 Personal goes for $69.99. If we take a percentage, we find that $69.99 is roughly 17.5% of $399.99.

Your evidence is an article full of speculation that came out a month BEFORE Microsoft had their big W10 event where they quite plainly said it's free if you upgrade in the first year, and there is NO SUBSCRIPTION? You obviously don't know what you're talking about so please do everyone a favor and stop spreading totally false information around.

Yeah that is the model they are going to.  If you miss a payment BAM your computer is locked and you cannot get any of your files until you pay.  Also if you don't keep it connected to the internet it will say your license has gone stale and will lock you out until it verifies that your subscription is still current.  I'm a developer with a full MSDN license to everything they had.  My Visual Studio program locked me out because of a stale license.  I got it updated and everything works but that was 2 minutes wasted while I was trying to get work done.

How would I be trolling?  Microsoft has said Windows 10 will be the last version you ever buy.  Why? Because they are trying to implement a subscription based OS.  It might not be here right now or when Windows 10 finally launches but that is what they are planning.  Why do you think they are trying to trick everyone into using a Live ID to sign into your computers?  There are still work arounds for it right now but Microsoft is trying hard to get everything subscription based.

Oh god. Nobody is predicting the distant future, but Nadella explicitly said they are NOT planning on any type of subscription for W10. As for the sign in using a Microsoft account, it lets you sync everything between multiple devices. This is seriously beginner level stuff, if you legitimately don't understand the idea there or you truly refuse to believe it when Nadella says there are no plans for a subscription then I don't know what to tell you.

I hope you're trolling but on this site it's hard to tell when people are, especially in any thread discussing technology.

Yeah everything is synced, that's how the internet works now.  It has nothing to do with their licensing model.  Office 365, subscription based and if you miss a payment you are locked out.  Visual Studio has a subscription based license option and will lock you out of the program if you have a stale license or missed a payment.  SharePoint online subscription based.  Azure services subscription based, miss a payment and your servers are turned off.  Xbox live, subscription based.  Everything that Microsoft is releasing is getting pushed towards subscription based.  Microsoft already does a type of subscription base for server software and servers you buy the license and pay for Software Assurance which grants you "free" upgrades to the next version.  They aren't free because you pay for the software assurance but they are free in that you don't have to buy a new license for the new version.  That's exactly what they said about Windows 10 it is "the last version you will have to buy".  Subscription based is a money maker.  To think Microsoft isn't going to try to maximize their revenue is naive.

People are partially confused because MS didn't word things well. They think it means that after one year you then have to pay for it, as if you are just getting a long ass trial version.

When in fact they are saying that if you upgrade within that year long window, it's free. if you wait 2 years, it won't be free.

Oh, so it's not so you can sync things, it's obviously part of some secret plot to get everyone locked into a subscription for W10... except they explicitly said they have no plans for that. Just because they offer other services that (GASP!) you have to pay for if you want to use doesn't mean W10 will be subscription based. I mean god forbid you have to pay to use software and services a company creates, but just let me reiterate one more time, they explicitly said there are no plans to make W10 a subscription.

I suppose they could have made pictograms and drawn up some charts to make it crystal clear to the seemingly large number of people who have a hard time understanding plain English, but outside of the "OMG THE SKY IS FALLING MICROSOFT IS EVIL WINDOWS 8 RUINED MY COMPUTER I HATE PAYING FOR SOFTWARE I WILL NEVER USE WINDOWS AGAIN" crowd I think most people understood what they were saying.

Because Microsoft never backtracks on what they say right?  LOL.  Microsoft can go ahead to head with the ATF on how many things they have said and then later reversed.  Remember when Microsoft said XBox One was going to require the internet and prohibit people from lending games to others?  They got bit in the ass for that one and quickly reversed it.  One of the products that I work this has an app that is going to be discontinued in February but we aren't allowed to tell customers that.  Microsoft isn't exactly up front to the public about their agenda.

Because ignorant idiots on the internet freaked out about it, not realizing that what MS was planning would have had a lot of cool benefits like being able to access your entire game library from any xbox one, so they bowed to the loudmouth morons crying all over the internet and scrapped their plans. That's a far cry from them saying W10 won't have a subscription and then doing it anyways. I'm done with this thread, it's veered too far into retardation and MS tinfoil derp. Here's a parting idea... until they actually do charge a subscription price for W10 stop whining about it, and when they do then you can go around and bitch about how outraged you are that you have to pay for software.

Apple stopped charging for their OS.  They make their money on iTunes media and App sales.  Microsoft wants to do the same.

PC sales are declining and the old model of hoping your customers upgrade every 3 years isn't viable.  From a technical standpoint, 7, 8, and 10 are all just optimized versions of Vista.  There's simply no reason for the average Win 7 user to upgrade, but that's a huge chunk of the market that can't buy Windows Apps.
