But there's one thing that pisses me off.  I removed all of the tiles from the start menu, and it won't shrink down to the "slim" size that I've seen in screenshots of people who have done this.  What's the deal?

You could do that in previous builds not 9926 though. Hopefully they add it back in the start menu took a step backward in the last build IMHO.

There is a registry edit to change it back if I remember right. Off to Google....

ETA:

Right click on the Start Button and select "Run"
Type "regedit"
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Explorer>Advance
Create a new DWORD (32-bit) value, call it "EnableXamlStartMenu"
Restart Explorer

That was my gut reaction after reading all of Subnet's attempts to convince us all that Windows 8 wasn't a complete train wreck.

Windows 8 is shit, even with classic shell.  Fuck that charms bar bullshit that you can't fully disable (and don't tell me I just don't know how, you can't fully disable it on a laptop, swiping the track pad a certain way will make it appear again no matter what settings you choose, period).

Windows 10 has all of the good stuff that windows 8 had, coupled with windows 7 and a bunch of stuff that neither had.  It is truly the best Windows OS ever, in my opinion.  If only I could get litestep to work.

Not in corporate environments.

I'm using 8 as we speak, and my game box is 8, but its basically Vista 2. Which means 10 will kick major ass.

Now that Microsoft have announced that Windows 10 is going to be free there's little point in Upgrading to 8 or 8.1

No, no it is not.  That's to expand the start menu, I want to shrink it to the slim size.  But apparently someone posted a registry entry to fix that so I will give that a shot momentarily.

its not, not yet.. this is a technical preview to get feedback before they put out a golden master or whatever the term is.  basically a beta test.

anyone can try it out though.

I've been running it for quite a while now and it's an excellent OS.  Even the luddites that couldn't wrap their minds around something as trivial as 8/8.1 are going to like it.

yeah... the next machine I build will probably be 10...  Mostly because of DirectX.
But then again... It may be time to look into Steam OS.
I don't like touch screens.  They have their place... but that place is not shoehorned into every device everywhere.  And touch screen design necessities are not good, needed or desired in a desktop or laptop environment.  I always have a mouse with my laptop as I have never liked the touch pad.  Touch sucks as a method to interact with computers in most situations and only really works in very narrow applications.  Phones... drawing tablets... lightweight web browsers... That's it really.

So any OS that is designed around foisting touch screens on me is not something I'm going to like.

FPNI.

It better be good.  I like Windows 7 and have no plans to switch to a totally alien system.

I have no patience to figure out Windows 8 or anything changed for the sake of making it different.

If Windows 10 is more of the same, I'll switch to Linux or even Apple.

F' Microsoft.  I am a customer and I have a checkbook.  MY needs and desires come before Microsoft's need to be all things to everyone.

You have to like what Microsoft sells you or you don't know how to use a computer.  You give Microsoft your money, and then you have to like whatever they give you.  If you don't, then there's something wrong with you.

Seems they reworked/broke the application install model though.  One of the apps we sell the installer crashes when trying to create the menu items.  Unfortunately, it's a 3rd party installer and they don't have an update yet.  Hoping Windows 10 gets pushed back for awhile so we can get a working installer *before* people buy Windows 10 on the first day and complain our stuff won't install (it actually does, but you have to go find it on the drive manually in explorer to run it)...  :-)

I thought 9 sucked worse than ME so they totally scraped it and went on with 10.
