The wife and I went on a carnival cruise this past week. I hate flying... Always have... Always will! Anyway... We flew into Fort Lauderdale last Sunday. And I have to admit... It was a decent flight. It made me second guess my pure hatred of flying. I actually thought to myself... Flying isn't that bad. Then yesterday happened.
We got back into port early and were off the ship before 7am. We were at the airport about 745a, our flight wasn't until 255p. We wound up booking an earlier flight home for 1150a. As soon as we took off there was turbulance which was probably the worst I have ever experienced in almost 30 flights I've taken. We were getting ready to land and were making a turn. At that point it honestly felt like plane just dropped and there was a momentary loss of control(I'm not a pilot nor was I in the cockpit... It's just what it seemed like) there was lots of banging and shaking and the engines went from a hum to a loud scream and you could feel the plane accelerate to get some speed back up. There was a few panic yells and gasps I heard from people... Even the look on the flight attendants faces were an "oh shit!" expression. I thought after that everything else was going to be cake... The captain had said a few minutes earlier there were some gusty winds going to be around for the landing. We were on our approach for landing over the runway and the plane kept dropping and rising and the wings kept dipping left and right... Almost to the point as I was looking out the window that the wing may hit the runway. We touched down and the plane kept jerking left and right getting closer to the side of the runway. The guy sitting behind me kept saying "keep it on the runway... Keep it on the fucking runway". The plane finally slowed and we were good. I mean it's not a total flying horror story but it was shitty and absolutely reinforces my hatred of flying. I've been on a couple shitty military flights that were bad like having an engine fail on takeoff. But honestly yesterday scared the shit out of me... And honestly it takes a lot to scare me. Anyone else hate flying? |

I absolutely hate it!!! What a freakn hassle...and I'm 6-4. Knees crunched up against the seat in front of me for hours...no thanks. I'd rather drive for two days than fly. This. I flew to the left coast last Tuesday and back home on Friday. This was my last flight on the airlines unless I die somewhere and they have to ship my body back by air. |

I had a landing a few years ago that was... eventful.
So windy that power poles near the airport were blown over. Pilot had to abort the landing four times - things like as we were at about 200 feet, a gust pushed us completely away from the runway and down 50 feet in the blink of an eye. There is no chorus that was ever more in sync than the entire group of passengers shouting "OH SHIT!" at the top of their lungs when that happened. Various people were in full-on hysterics all over the plane, and people were barfing left and right. The lady right behind us was flipping her lid, and I didn't need her scaring my son even worse, so I was turning around, going back and forth between her and my son - getting my son distracted, then talking to her about anything in the world to keep her mind off of it, and keep her from the sobbing, swearing, and freaking out. Later on, I found out that we were one of only two planes that were able to land that afternoon, all other planes just diverted. I don't know why our pilot didn't. After we landed, it took the flight attendants a good amount of time to collect all of the barf bags. I think our pilot must have earned his wings doing carrier landings.
But, I still like flying, and haven't hesitated to go on more flights. |
But I hate traveling, in general. Being different places is neat, but getting there sucks. __________________________________________________________________ Cross-platform electronic bound book (original thread). I love flying.
I remember as a kid sitting in the cockpit of a 747 and looking at awe out across the clouds. Me and my brother used to fly between England and America every year. Put on at one end and picked up at the other. It used to be an adventure. Not so much now but I still enjoy the actual flying part. |
|
I hate flying if I am not the one controlling the plane. I am completely comfortable flying a small plane in shitty windy weather. Put me in the back on a perfectly smooth day and it makes me nervous as hell. The funny part is I know a lot of pilots that feel the same way. |

Where were you flying to? Sounds like the circle to 29 in EWR. FWIW, all you were describing is windy conditions. That's actually fun. |

When you are in a plane, those two pilots up front have your life in your hands. A lot of people can't handle that. |

I love roller coasters. I absolutely fucking hate the vertical g's of turbulence or change of flap positions. I have this feeling in the back of my head that I will die in a plane crash someday. I think my nerves get to me at times. I about had a panic attack in the 777 on the first trip home from OIF. |

I hated the airport experience so I learned to fly and I bought an airplane. The thing to remember about turbulence is that air has currents and moves just like water. Those bumps that you're feeling are just the waves and eddies.
As the ground heats, the air in contact with the ground heats as well and rises. The ground heats unevenly and, therefore, you get some areas that expand more quickly than others, creating uneven areas of of expanding air which displaces other air (wind). This may be total BS from here on out, but it makes sense to me and I'll share it. With what I said above, in places like Florida where the sun heats the moisture rich air quickly, that air has enough upward velocity so that instead of the moisture going to where it's going to go and staying there, it overshoots, cools and comes down. At the same time, it passes other rising moisture, squeezing itself below the rising moisture and creating friction and heat at the same time. This process continues and eventually develops into thunderstorms with tops up to 12 miles high, and projecting ice crystals thousands of feet above those tops. |
| I like flying. Probably the worst I can remember was flying into Miami some time in the 90s when I was a kid on the old tristars. As we're descending over the water, plane drops about 200 ft in 1-2 sec. As a kid I was a lot less afraid of turbulence than I am now so I was fine with it. Then the plane was struck by lightening. If you've never been on an older plane that has been struck by lightening, it makes the loudest most deafening crack. Sounds like the plane is snapping in half. I fly quite a bit, and I think that's one of only 2 flights I can remember being on where people were crying and screaming, and clapped when we landed. |

Quoted: Yep. It's so much easier, in CONUS, just to put everything in a vehicle and spend the extra few days to get there. No searches, cramped quarters, shitty meals, horrible sleep, huge lines, prohibited item lists, metal detectors and x-ray machines, coordinating a vehicle to get you to the airport, then at your destination, and then again from the airport. I like to fly. I always get a window seat because I like to see the Earth from altitude. I also like seeing the tops of the clouds. It is even cool on a clear night when you can see all the city lights of many cities by looking out the window.
The coolest flight I ever took was one in January out of Fairbanks. Clear night and the northern lights were dancing. This is pretty cool from the gorund but at altitude it looked like I could reach out and grab them. |
