What are some go and no-go brands?

I don't know shit about laptops and a female is asking me about them.  Like hell if I'm going to admit to her that idk what's up.

I've had good luck with HPs, and friends have had good luck with Toshibas.

Every Dell I've had has had problems.

I used to be a HUGE Gateway fan but their quality went downhill after they were bought by some other company (may ahve been Acer, or Asus, or even A-Nus laptops for all I know)

Have 2 Toshibas and both hard drives crashed. Had to buy replacement ones from the computer store.

Have 1 Dell, no problems at all.

Unless she's going you give you some for your effort, ask her if her google is broken.

Nothing but problems with the last few Dells here also.I spent over a grand on my last Dell laptop and it just died 6 months out of the 3 year warranty. I just ordered a Lenovo after guys recommending them on this site.
I ordered a Think pad Edge and it should be here this coming week .

Just hoping it lasts longer then my Dell.

I like Dell, never a problem for me. Otherwise, ask if she needs a computer, or a means to surf the net, stream Netflix, etc.., steer her towards a tablet like the Kindle Fire HD, iPad, etc..,  You'll sound smart and shit.

Pretty much any name brand will do if all she's going to do is surf the internet, email and write a few Word docs and Excel spreads sheets. If she needs one for high end graphics or audio video production work then that's another matter and will require higher end hardware with more attention to the actual components. But I'm guessing since she is asking someone else for advice then she's not a power user and doesn't need a mobile workstation.

She might even just consider a tablet with a keyboard.

Big question... what does she want to do with said laptop?  Gaming?  Desktop replacement?  Office?  Bookface?
Each one has a specific set of qualifiers... you can do more with a gaming/desktop replacement than you can with just a office style laptop, but... it's gonna weigh a frikkin ton and be hot.  If its just general computing go with a best buy special... not gonna stress the system enough to hurt it.  She wants to game... she should already know.

what does she want to do with it, for surfing email and facebook instagram, just about anything will do. For gaming , movie editing, graphic design, you need a little more muscle

you can get a lemon from any of the makers, maybe some more than others.

Asus, Acer, Hp you get a bit for your money  Toshiba and Dell charge a little more.  For Apple while they make a decent product you get the least for your money and they start around $1000 last time I checked. for a PC laptop they can be found starting at $300 for entry level and up

2 gigs of ram should be mandatory minimum spec.
solid state drive while the smaller ones have less storage they have a quicker response, 7200rpm drives make a bit of noise, heat and battery drain in a laptop. but are more fun than a 4200 or 5400 rpm clunker.
the bigger the screen the heavier it will be.

netbooks are fairly popular for being little and light, but putting data on them is a sob if your not downloading it.

a lot of people that love to game, don't know shit about computers.  so until he responds it hard to judge. but if she is asking would seem she does not know.

Hp or Toshiba if you want brands.  Their products are well thought out and well supported.

How big does she want and what will it be used for.

For nothing but watching DVDs and surfing the net, a $50 used laptop, with a new HD and Ubuntu will get you what you want for under 100 bucks.

Another vote for Lenovo.  Don't buy the cheap end,  get a thinkpad.  Typing on my 3rd, a W530,  no pre installed junk,  fingerprint reader is great,  boots in seconds.

Wife is using cheaper G series.  I hate it.

Had huge problems with Dell this spring,  bought a xps15, was bad,  got replacement, was bad,  fought for 6 weeks for re-fund,  was bad.  Finally got Amex involved,  15 seconds later I was whole and Dell had to fight with Amex.

FWIW, buy stuff like this with Amex.   Look at Lenovo Outlet for deals on new in box deals.

I used a Lenovo at my old company and my son has one for college now. I've always liked them.

I use a Dell at work now. Had a graphics card and a battery crap out on me. One of my engineers had the hard drive die on his.

My wife uses a cheapie Gateway that seems decent.

Let me guess ............... she has $250 to spend, and wants "the best one" for that much.

This is a no-win. No matter what you recommend, if it fucks up (and they all do, sooner or later) it will be your fault because you gave her shitty advice.

Good luck.

Good ones:

Apple Macbook Pro (faggy but good computer)

Dell XPS line

Sony, but only if you're willing to spend.  Get the top of the heap if it's for business.  I paid 3 grand for mine and it was some of the best money I ever spent.

If it's just to surf the web, blog and facebook and shit, just get any utlrabook.

Better yet, unless it's for work or school, just get a tablet.

Gaming?  Be prepared to get a huge one for lots of dough.  Alienware.

I used to be a Dell fan but the last 2 machines I've owned have soured me on them. My current laptop is a HP which has been pretty good. Friend of mine who knows computers said next laptop get a Asus, their really good value for the money

I've had 2 Fujitsu laptops in the last 10 years. My current one is 6.5 years old and still works great. I only replaced the 1st one because it was stolen from me. I've upgraded the HD's and the RAM to improve performance.

My daughter is a serial laptop killer (killed 2 Acer's in 2 years) and has yet to kill her Asus that is 3 years old. She still loves it too.

My wife has had the same Compaq for going on 5 years now so it is also pretty good.

If she just wants to surf the net, check email, etc, then +1 on the Kindle.  If she really needs a laptop......Sony Vaio.

I've had a Mac Book since 2008, still runs like it was brand new and have never had a single issue with it.  I plan to keep it for another 6 years.

After many disappointing experiences with HP, Dell, and Toshiba, I'm in the ASUS boat.

I've got one of their gaming laptops to game on when I travel for work, and I got my wife one the midrange ones.  No issues with either one.
