S&W MP 40 or Glock 22?

No experience with .40. It's for my wife.

Didn't like the Beretta. Too much on top.

Of the two, the M&P by a slight margin. I own both btw.

M&P is a good choice, the .40 can be a little too snappy for a women to handle.

My sister weighs just over 100 pounds and enjoys shooting  my M&P .40 more than any of my other handguns and she's pretty good with it.

The M&P .40 is a soft shooting pistol.

mp + feel, sights
- trigger and upgrades

glock is a better beater, and a new trigger is 15$

but i think i would go mp, and i own all 3 sizes of glock 40

The M&P .40 is the softest recoiling .40 I've ever shot. It's my duty weapon.

I really do enjoy shooting it.

Even for a lot of men.   9mm is just fine.

You can still buy ammo for it, that's all I know.

I haven't shot either. I have a sig226 and never wanted anything else since I shot it.

That should be the deciding factor...

Wouldn't want the sammich maker to lose any digits.

I have owned both and feel that the M&P is much more ergonomic. My wife agrees and she is pretty small.

I know I will probably get flamed for this, but why not 9mm? I don't want this to derail into a bash fest, but I'm just curious. With today's ammo offerings the .40 doesn't offer any real advantage in performance and is quite a bit more "snappy" in the recoil department. My wife has said on numerous occasions that she prefers to shoot .45 acp over .40. If you both are going to be using the gun, you may want to at least consider the 9mm.

I carry my 26 over my 23 most days. IMHO, either get a 9 or a 45. I was one of those, "need to buy a 40 for more knockdown power guys" when I bought my first handgun and have since decided that I just don't like 40 that much.

So OP, why the fo-tah?

And why for the love of all things holy will S&W not come out with the M&P in 10mm?

When you say "men" you must mean woman, right?

I have a G22 and it is ok, nothing special. It is pretty snappy though.

Glock 22 is tough as nails, reliable as you can make a gun.

Buy a 9mm. You're not losing anything and after paying for a few boxes of ammo, you'll be glad.

Having carried a G22, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. M&P was supposedly designed around .40 from the get-go, and it has a good rep with the cartridge. I'd jump that way.

I own both hard to go wrong with either one, I would slightly lean towards the Glock, just handles better for me.

I would not give a .40 to a female, at least as a first handgun.  They will not shoot well with it due to the snappy recoil.  Get her a 9mm.

agree with several others, go with a 9mm in the M&P, .40 is too much gun for most women.

A lady friend of mine, whom I have been mentoring as she's a new shooter, wanted to try my G22 after shooting only .22 and .9mm and she loved it and had no problms with it at all. She liked it. Snappier, sure, but nothing a small woman with good technique can't handle.

I have a G23 and a G27, with Lone Wolf 9MM conversion barrels for both.  I generally carry .40 and play with 9mm at the range.

Has your wife actually shot a .40 S&W yet

I know some true "operators" that don't like it and prefer the .45 ACP for controllability.
3/23/2013 5:42:58 AM EDT
[#34]
I have an M&P .40..Easy to handle and not much recoil at all.
3/23/2013 5:44:28 AM EDT
[#35]
Woman or not, 9mm is the better option. Price, recoil-control, and capacity put 9mm well above .40. At the end of the day, the "extra punch" .40 offers is negligible. Its still a handgun round. The only argument that could be made right now is that you can find ammo for a fortay easier than a 9mm. Especially quality defense like Speer Golddots, Federal HST, and Winchester Ranger.

Either way, go with the M&P.

Let her try them in hand and maybe rent them first.  .40 can be snappy to some people. How is she with other calibers?

This.

And encourage 9mm. Not because .40 is "snappy" (though she may find it so), but because 9mm is equally effective, she'll have greater capacity for the same size frame, and ammo is generally cheaper.

My M&P 40 was inaccurate, production flaw, so I dumped it for a Gen 4 G35. The Gen 4 Glocks in anything larger than 9mm have significant recoil reduction. Go with the Glock because there is years and years worth of aftermarket support.
