Just spent the last 6 hours rooting out and restoring the wife's laptop after the S.M.A.R.T. recovery virus.  That's one of those extortion type viruses that pops up a fake 'virus checker' screen and then prompts you to purchase the full version of the virus program to remove it.  Downloaded a trial version of Malwarebytes  and that seem to dig it out...then that virus hidden every frickn' file on the C drive.  Luckily I found a DOS based utility that scans your hard drive and unhides files so I didn't have to manually do it.  Desktop was black and had nothing in the start menu....nasty.

Frickin' Microsoft Security Essentials never saw it and was totally worthless.  Same thing happened to me with Norton once.  Wife says the pop-ups started when she was viewing some video on couponing.  The malwarebytes program also flagged a bunch of files with the word "couponing" in the name.  Who would have thought couponing shit is so virus infested.
