Looking at 1-4x variable scopes.

Will be using it on a 16" AR-15 and/or Sig 556.

Came across a Bushnell Elite 4200 1.25-4X24 and Weaver Classic Extreme 1.5-4.5x24.

Basically, looking for a good scope, in the $400 range, that can be used for duty use too.

Which to get? Or other suggestions?

The GRSC looks pretty good in that price range. I've been eyeing them. I really want an Elcan SpecterDR though.

I was looking at them too.  Overall, the GRSC seems to have good reviews too. The Elcan is above my pay grade.

Wow!  Did not know about the Mark AR line.  Not sure if the Bushnell 4200 is worth an extra $75 now.

I have a Trijicon TR24G and love it! It's a lot more expensive than your target price range, though.
The Burris Tac-30 seems to be getting good reviews...
Good luck!

Personally i would either go with a Trijicon Accupoint probably the red post triangle or if I wanted to dial in correction with the 1-4  HD  Super Sniper but they are both over your price range.

I'm leaning towards the Burris Tac30 now.  For $75 more ($500 total), I can get the scope, PEPR mount, and Burris Fastfire II red dot.

I am not really familiar with the Burris, but the Meopta will have superior glass(brighter and clearer) it also has the lighted reticle that is visible in daylight.  Meopta does have a lifetime transferable warranty, so no worries about buying used.
That said that does sound like a good price on the tac30 with the extras.

For the money it looks tough to go wrong on the  tac30.  I would probably go with a Larue or ADM mount. I have had the Pepr in the past, and while it got the job done I wasn't very fond of it.

I have been looking a 1-4x myself.  My son just bought a Vortex PST 1-4x and all I can say is wow.  Wasn't sure I would like the reticle but after using it in a 3-gun match Saturday and some shooting earlier in the week, I found it easy to use.  The illuminated reticle isn't quite bright enough for daytime use but that was not an issue for me.

A couple other guys who have Nikon M223 scopes both said the Vortex had better optics, and I would not disagree.  Even though it is about $100 more than you wanted to spend, I think it is well worth the price.

How does the illuminated reticle hold up in daylight?

I have a Trijicon Accupoint, and it's a great scope. In your price range, the Leupold VX-II or whatever the equivalent is might work. Eye relief is kinda long for an AR though.

http://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/product/productId/8810

I have this scope on my .375 H&H rifle. I've got 500 or 600 rounds of full power .375 ammo through it, plus a bunch of reduced recoil loads.

The Meopta K-Dot is a fantastic scope.  The glass and illumination is lightyears beyond anything in the $400 range.  It is also an older design, and longer than a lot of the current optics (unless they've been revamped.)  They do not have a super tactical rangefinding holdover reticle however.  I'd snap a used one up for $400.

I look for clarity.  It's gotta make you go "wow" when you look through it.

Then how good it tracks and hold zero.  Nothing sucks worse than a scope that wanders around when you try to zero it.

The next important part of the equation is the quality of the mount.  If a scope is all bound up and twisted in the mount because of crooked cheap ass rings or a shitty uneven torqued mount job, it's not going to track and will change zero with every shot.

After that is how low can I get it so my cheek falls right on the stock and I don't have to any adjusting to get perfect eye relief.  I just want to pull the gun up with my head in a natural position and cheek planted on the stock and be looking right down the center of the scope and on target.

Of course, this matters more as the recoil of the gun increases.

I didn't much care for the Vortex I tested.

I own a K-Dot and I love/hate it.

I love the optics, magnification range, daylight visible illumination and build quality.
I hate the tube length and hunting reticle. Keep in mind the K-Dot is just a big game scope.
It's a good reticle for out to 300 yards but a lil too plain for me. The tube needs a foot hacked off
the front too.

The Hi-Lux is a better designed scope for the intended function. The K-Dot is a better scope and
daylight illumination beats non-illuminated.

Not visible in bright light. On the flip side it has night vision settings.
Hi-Lux has a new generation of the CMR coming out. It will be slightly more expensive
but will have some improvements based directly on user feedback.

It's a very well thought out piece and the designer spent a lot of time on a two way range.

Hi-Lux has a DMR scope coming out next. A 2-10x which should be pretty sweet.

Was just looking over the specs of the Meopta K-Dot.

It's 12 inches long and 18.7 ounces!

Looks like the Tac30 is only an inch shorter and 1.7 ounces lighter.

The CMR is 10.2 inches long and 17 ounces (same as Tac30).

I'm digging the length (9.2 inches) and weight (9.5 ounces) of the Leupold Mark AR.  No illuminated reticle though.

I would ask myself why a scope that's 30% shorter than the others is 50% lighter than the others, and I'm quite the Leupold fan.

Good length and I can deal with the weight.

The Tac30/Fastfire II/PEPR mount combo is the same price.  Guess this combo package is appealing since I get all this for a pretty good price.

I will probably upgrade to an ADM mount in the near future though.

I think VX-IIIs are good scopes.  They make a 30mm, VXIII "euro" 1.5-5 that has a German #4 post, illumination and is about that price.

Also comes with $50 mail in rebate, and a free Buck Commander Black Timber hunting pack (like I need another BOB ).
