WTF?!

Oh man. This sucks. We are truly diminished. Pat was an asset to shooting. Guys like him cannot be replaced.

RIP Pat.

I will say that as a humble civilian, and someone new to tactical shooting, at the time, that training with him was a watershed moment for my shooting progression.

I had been shooting some IDPA and 3 gun matches, but his class was the first formal training I ever received.  Seeing someone with his skill level run a carbine, and beginning to understand just what was possible for someone that knew what they were doing with a carbine was an eye opening experience.

I spent the first half of the first day just silently hoping that I was not working my way up to being "that guy" in the class.  This was also the first time I had shot with any tactical gear.  He came over after he finished his lunch and said "look, you need to know that you look like a "soup sandwich", and he proceeded to get me squared away from there.

Years later, and a fair amount of training later, I am still running my stuff as he originally set me up, and I can honestly say, I took more away from his class that changed my shooting technique, than any training I have received since.

FWIW, I was very glad to say that I did not end up being "that guy".

Picture taken by Pat.

Anybody else got any stories, as a small tribute?

ETA:  He did not like the Eotech on there.

Another one of the good ones has left us.  I hope there mentors of such caliber to replace him in training the next generation.

In my little world, back when I started getting serious about shooting, I read everything by Pat that I could get my hands on.  He invented and perfected the art as far as I'm concerned.

Wind your neck in, not everybody here has shrines to the tactical instructor community and know's everyone and anyone. Nor should we be expected to know these people.

And so with that said it's a harmless question. Now go log off and stay off until you can think rationally when someone asks a completely harmless question instead of having a fit.

I was in training today and found out that he had passed. The room was full of police chiefs, EMCs and elected officials. I kinda got choked up a bit and had to leave the room. About a month ago he sent me a friend request on FB. I was so humbled and got so excited that I yelled out to my wife, "I just a got a friend request from Pat Fucking Rogers!!!". To me, it was like being a kid and having one of your heroes ask if he could be your friend.
I am honored to have chatted with him a few times. The shooting community has lost another great soul.

I knew him well.....been shocked since this AM when I was told. As some said, you knew if he liked you and you knew if he didnt. I was lucky enough to AI a couple of his classes and he invited me to audit a bunch more.

Rest in peace my friend.

ETA my avatar is a picture he took of me shooting his rifle.

Pat was the type of guy that, if he considered you a friend, made you want to work that much harder at being a better person so that you felt worthy of it. In fact, the single greatest thing I'm ashamed of is how I underestimated his reaction to finding out about my transition; I had basically made my peace with the idea that it would mean the end of our association, then when I finally explained what was going on he said he had already figured it out and that I still would always be his friend and welcome in his classes. And I certainly wasn't expecting him to post in my thread like he did.

One of the BEST in the industry with an unparalleled sense of humor. I am honored to have trained under him.

Wish I could have took one more course.

I never had the pleasure of meeting him in person, only a few brief conversations online. To those who knew him and are grieving, I am very sorry for your loss of a friend and brother in arms. The term legend is often overused, but he is one who has earned that and more.

Took His class in 2008, here is an excerpt from my AAR...

Pat is a no nonsense guy with lots of info to share. He has probably forgotten more about the carbine, tactics and employment of those then I, and many others will ever know. He also is a stand up comic with hours of ethic jokes to entertain and amuse everyone. He has also probably forgotten more jokes then most of us will ever know.

He is very serious about what he is teaching and that it only takes a split second to get lazy and lose situational awareness. He worked hard trying to keep everyone tuned in, safe, and open minded to trying new things.
