Just curious on how many times a week do you run and how far?
I use to run 5mi a day 5x a week, but that was when I was in baseball and from age 18-22. Now at 27, I am looking at trying to get back into this whole fitness life again. Got a girlfriend that isn't into it and that was what pulled me away from my healthy ways. I was 180lbs and now I am 215lbs. I do a lot of hunting and other outdoor activites that would benefit from a good fitness routine but just curious on what others think. I shoot a bow a lot and want to continue that and possibly crank my draw weight to 80lbs. I pull back 70lbs now. Also to help with stability, endurance, etc.... As for supplements, I never used them before (Not even in college baseball). I was looking at Mtn Ops and getting some powder and maybe something else for my joints. I wanna slim down and increase strength. The hard part is maintaining a workout routine. |

Quoted:I wanna slim down and increase strength. The hard part is maintaining a workout routine. A good diet will help you slim down. A lot of people recommend tracking calories with MyFitnessPal or a similar app. There are a lot of paleo and keto eaters around these parts, so be prepared to put down the carbs. Also, what do you drink? Running will not help you increase strength. That will help burn some calories and your endurance/conditioning. Strength will come from a barbell program like Starting Strength or Stronglifts (current thread here). I should note those programs are 3 days a week, which hopefully would help you stick to it. You could also look into a bodyweight routine or something like P90X, but most here will say to read this and check back often for help and motivation. I read Solace22's entire thread over a few days recently. Look through it, and see if that is something you'd be interested in. It shows that you won't kill it in the gym everyday, but with determination and some good advice/support, you can make great progress towards being a better version of yourself. As for supplements, what are you looking for them to do? I think fish oil and MSM glucosamine for joints, with a pre/post workout would be common. Creatine might be another recommendation. I will declare there are many here with way more knowledge than me, so wait to hear from them.

Starting Strength book is a great place to start finding out about lifting.
Stronglifts 5x5 or Starting Strength are both great beginner programs. 5x5 has an app to help out. Running sucks. I probably do 3 or 4 miles a week. I eat lots of protein powder. I order 11 lb bags from myprotien.com. Their Hurricane Extreme is filled with all the stuff you need post workout for a good recovery. I take fish oil for my joints not sure if it helps. |

I run 12 miles a week for maintenance. Two sessions of six miles. When I am training for a half marathon,
I will increase the miles to about 15 to 25 per week. With only running two days a week, I have found that training four days a week allows me to keep increasing size and strength. I will train on Sat, Sun, Wed, Thurs. I run Tuesday and Friday mornings. I weigh 208 and finished my last half a little over two hours. I am pushing 42. With my age, I focus more and more on recovery. I will have a morning protein shake with fruit, spinach, whey protein isolate and pasteurized egg whites. During the day I will have two turkey sandwiches with fruit and bananas. I will drink a pre-workout before weight training. I like Battle Axe Cuts from Rogue Nutrition. After workouts I will have chocalate milk with an electrolyte powder. With running, I will utilize things like compression tights, foam rollers, lacrosse balls etc. You can absolutely make strength gains while running. My old workout partner was an ex SEAL and he would run 5 miles before every workout. He made excellent gains because he focused on recovery. |
