I've read some older threads on this topic on Arfcom and other forums. Most people say why would you want to do it?
Hear are my reasons, and a question: I could just build an upper and not have to register another long gun in CA. Use an existing lower or 80% lower. Have a good barrel made without the gas port. Almost infinite number of accessories. I could potentially build it myself with parts. (I built a few other ARs) I'm looking at the 6.5 Gren. for fun and target purposes out to 1000 yards max. This way I could use the AR15 platform. A straight pull like the UK Lantec or a left side charger would be easy and fast enough. My question: Can this be as accurate as a good bolt gun assuming high quality parts? Cause if it won't be as accurate there is no point in doing it. |
| With regards to the barrel you saw on Brownells, it would have a gas port. As you said, as far as legality goes you may need a rifle with no gas port drilled at all. I saw a thread somewhere about someone who had built a straight pull AR in the UK and for it to be flat out legal he has a barrel made without a gas port. I don't know if California has intent to assemble or not, but having a gun with a gas port and another semi auto AR in the house might be enough to make the argument that you could readily convert the straight pull to semi auto. I am sure you already know all this, but for me that would push me towards a bolt action. You could always buy a savage and slap whatever caliber barrel you want on it and be in the clear legality-wise. |
A cheaper option to having a barrel built with no gas port drilled would be to simply install the gas tube upside down thereby cutting off the gas and giving you a single shot rifle. I know it can be done since years ago when I took apart my M-16A2 WAY past the authorized field stripping point, I was young back then and not as up to speed on gunsmithing as I am today and like a damn fool, I didn't pay close enough attention and put the gas tube back in upside down. We were at a CAX at 29 Stumps and had to go out to a pop-up range where we would see 20 targets pop up. After the first few shots trying to figure out why my rifle never cycled, it dawned on me what I had done and had to fire the rest of the course of fire with my straight pull rifle. Hey, I got 16 out of 20 so not too bad considering the limitations I had inadvertently placed on myself.

CA doesn't have the intent to build to the best of my knowledge but I would just as soon not even go there.
There is a good old thread from the Gunsmithing forum about this. Easy to do with relatively simple tools that I have. Nothing is as simple as it looks I've learned. : ) Straight Pull AR in UK |
