IF you just want a basic kit instead of building one, look at the adventure medic kits.  They are reasonably priced and cover the basics well.

First of all ask yourself what your level of training is, as in what extent of first aid procedures do you feel qualified to perform. Go from there. Looking at the materials you have trained with is a good start.

I look at first aid preparedness in two ways:

1) What would we need in an emergency.
2) What would we need, that we could not get if a storm closed all the stores.

Just my $0.02

D6T makes a very important point!

If I may humbly add to this, if your a family man (or woman), you may be the man down
Either train your family, or leave clear, panic friendly instructions for those who will need to
make use of your medical kit.

The Adventure Medical Kits:
Are the leaders in the industry.
Include "clear, panic friendly instructions" that assume little or no training...

I looked at The "Adventure Medical Kits", they are very budget friendly, and having, "clear, panic friendly instructions",
this sounds like a very good start point!!!

Again, just my $0.02,
