Is there a backpack review there somewhere?
I'm looking for a good frame pack and am of course leaning towards a large ALICE or MALICE. Any other good non-Kifaru mil frame packs out there that are in a reasonable price range? |

I'm sort of in the same boat. I've been playing around with ALICE packs, and while they do the job I want something a little more modern, and in multicam.
Right now im running a large MOLLE ruck, and a Large ALICE. Both are on the down east airborne frames with upgraded MOLLE 2 shoulder straps, and belts. I have a couple medium alice packs, but I like having a frame, and dont use them. I like the 2 large rucks i've got pretty darn well. I'm leaning towards Kifaru. They have some awesome packs if money isn't an issue. |

Here is something to think about...
All my backpacks are of generic color (blue, brown, beige, etc.) instead of any kind of "tactical" color like digital camo, woodland camo, etc. Also, I do not have any "military/tactical" backpacks with alice clips, loops, etc. All mine are good quality camping or school backpacks. I stay away from anything that would attract attention from others and look like any other sheeple. You do not want to attract attention while bugging out. Having a large ALICEor MALICE pack in camo color will get unwanted attention. |

Having a large ALICEor MALICE pack in camo color will get unwanted attention. How, exactly? If I had a dime for every time someone stated this crap as fact, I'd be rich. Your backpack by itself is not going to draw any undue attention from anyone. Do you people who say this even realize how damned many surplus ALICE packs and duffle bags there are floating around? What you're doing while wearing your backpack is what's going to draw the attention. Following the crowd? Fitting in with all the other refugees, who are sporting any sort of luggage from Samsonite to plastic grocery bags, and everything in between, to include those dreaded military surplus bags? NO ATTENTION. Wandering off on your own? Cutting through the woods, trying to avoid other refugees/authorities/whatever? ATTENTION. No matter how neutral-colored your unobtrusive Jansport backpack is. |
| Take a look at the Kelty line. They make good stuff that is moderately priced. The Redwing or the Trekker would be good options. It depends on exactly what your looking for and how big you need. The Redwing comes in three sizes depending on your needs and there is no telling how many miles have been loggen by someone with a Trekker over the years if you wnat an external frame. If you happen to live close to an REI go by and play around with both of them and see how they feel. If you shop around you should be able to find either of these packs at a good deal. |

So if someone came through your AO during SHTF with a military style pack you'd give him a pass? Sorry, but I'm putting anybody with milspec style anything, clothing or pack, wtf ever in my crosshairs that come remotely close to my safe zone. There's a lot of better gear out there than military style equipment, that will get you farther AND faster w/o getting shot in the process. Living in an area where folks use a ton of gear, I'm telling you that military style stuff is seriously cramping your style in more ways than one. Being the "Gray Man" has it's advantages. Tons more viable options that are lighter weight and can carry the same amount/more and be more comfy in the process |

Your backpack by itself is not going to draw any undue attention from anyone. yes it does...happens at EVERY DAMN hike i host! Dudes show up all molle pack this and that kifago packs as big as house's. Wearing Khaki pants, UA shirts and ball caps... all the other hikers we pass ,run into.. ![]() ![]() are you guys military?? I own camo/mil packs for my "field " gear,,,, for backpacking/BOBs i use earth toned Keltys. And dont dress like im going to a carbine class! If i do use my med alice or a molle'd camelbak i dress normal ( yellow columbia short, sage convertiable pants and columbia bonnie hat or ball cap) no one bats an eye! |

hike i host! So are we talking about hikes in the woods with the granola crowd passing by, or SHTF? Because frankly, I'm not going to be heading out on a weekend hike in the Ocala National Forest if the SHTF. As to the other reply above referring to putting anyone with 'milspec anything' in the crosshairs, well, you have my sympathy when someone with a subdued Kelty pack kills you, rapes your family, eats your food, and burns your shit down because you gave them a pass based on what luggage they had or didn't have. Both of you have, in your replies, fueled everything I said. It's not your pack or your accessories; it's what you do with them. I appreciate the points that are trying to be made. And yes, there is gear that is far, far superior to milsurp, be it look, color, comfort, capacity, or whatever else. Anyone I don't know is suspect during SHTF, whether they have an ALICE pack or a Hello Kitty purse. It'll be the same with the authorities. Anyone wandering around on their own, doing their own thing, is going to draw attention regardless of their luggage. Far more attention than someone who seems to be just another sheep following the crowd, who happens to have an army surplus bag. |
