I'm looking for PTO Generator recommendations
We lost a deep freeze of meat due to a power outage and need a solution to run a well pump, two freezers, and forced air. I'm thinking 15kW and that's about what my John Deere 4005 could handle (2 hp = 1kW) I have an electrician coming to do the transfer switch, but could really use the survival forum insights into recommended PTO Genny's. Thank you! |

I just picked up a used 13KW PTO genny with the driveshaft for $1100.
It's the same model as Northern tools sells now, but mine was made way back in 1987! -in "West Germany" I'm not sure where they make them now, but the unit looks to be very well built. I've yet to spin it up on my own I need to get the PTO box for my transmission next... Keep an eye on Craigs list! |

I'm looking for PTO Generator recommendations i have a Tiger Power 10KW unit, works great. see http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_10_17/644329_DIY_Generator_Power_Cables_and_Install.html&page=2#i10993206 and http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_10_17/647155_a_reminder____test_your_stuff_while_it_s_warm_and_sunny_outside___.html ar-jedi |
I have a 25KW Winco and I love it. I always have plenty of diesel fuel on hand and my Kubota isn't very thirsty. I don't have a tractor big enough to max out the generator(not even close ) but your generator can't be too big. I think the extra mass of a bigger generator helps smooth out heavy loads starting up, electric motors for example. And one more excuse to buy a bigger tractor never hurt either . MBanning

We've been kicking this around for a long time. Given unlimited funds I'd get one of the "QC" (continuous duty rated) models from these guys: http://www.baumalight.com/generators.php. Have yet to pull the trigger on anything. Considering your tractor has 35 PTO HP, I think anything over 17KW would be a waste. Measure your loads and see what you need, that's a lot of power. Likely you could go much smaller. My $.02 & tag, -Slice ETA: Running that tractor WOT under load will drink some fuel –– plan accordingly. I have a 4120, and not under full load (bushhogging, loader work/firewood, etc) I can empty the 15 gal tank in < 10 hours. |

I'm looking for PTO Generator recommendations Just out of curiosity, why choose a PTO generator over a portable generator? I can think of some pros, but I can think of some cons as well. I have a 5kW gas currently, but I also have a deep freeze, two fridges and a small cheese fridge and a well. The house only has forced air for heat. I'm adding redundancy by installing a Hitzer stove, but the PTO will provide flexibility for now. |

Feral, you get a LOT more KW for the money with a PTO rig. If you already have a tractor. Mount it on a wheeled cart and you can pull it anywhere. Some have a 3point lift frame already, do you can just carry it with the tractor. A small portable is handy, I have one for use with the RV, bout outside of that there is nothing it will do that the PTO rig will do better. Ops |
| I can definitely see the benefit of a PTO generator. The big thing that keeps me from pulling the trigger on one is the the noise. An 8K portable supplies most of my needs and is barely audible outside the house. My tractor turning the PTO at 540 RPM pretty much roars. |
