Electronics can be EMP hardened. Important .mil ones are. Some electronics aren't particularly susceptible, like small devices. |

Well they were flying with fighter escort. Why would someone providing aid need fighter escort? IF we were hit in a flow blown nuclear attack our major civilian airports and our military airfields would be taken out. However, we have carriers that are underway at all times that could pull in their airwings to provide air defense, plus our cruisers with their missle shields. Of course, our fleet could have been taken out...but I seriously doubt any one is capable of doing both a huge nuclear attack and taking out our naval fleet. The MIG19 isn't capable of air-to-air refueling either so how the hell did it end up over Kansas? Where the hell is NATO? |

MIG 19 has a combat range of 1,375 miles and it is 7,236.5 miles between Hong Kong and LA. The MIGs would have had to fly up north over Alaska and refuel at some point along the way on the ground before being able to reach Kansas even with external drop tanks. Going straight across the Pacific is just a no go for the MIG 19. |
Dude, we are NATO. We go down like we did in Jericho, NATO will not be there to pick us up. |

The Antonov AN-225 has with maximum fuel a range of 8,700 miles, but with max payload that would be cut down to 2,500 miles. Again the Antonov is not capable of midflight refueling so how the hell did it make to Kansas? Either there is a joint effort between China and the United States where we have allowed use of our airbases for refueling or China took an airport somewhere in Alaska or Canada. |

Thanks for getting me hooked on a TV show guys. Just what I need, another time sink. I managed to download and watch every episode over the last 3 days. Also I haven't read everything thats been said, but it seems like most people are taking the pessimistic view. Whats been shown is not outside the realm of an international relief effort which makes a certain amount of sense given the presence of mercenaries. If things were dire enough for the gov't to resort to mercenaries it seems possible they might also require outside assistance with relief drops over the significant geographic area that is the US. In fact, thinking about the current strategic airlift fleet, I'm not entirely certain the US military could run supply drops to virtually the entire country at full capacity. You're talking running supplies over a huge distributed area using somewhere in the neighborhood of 700 aircraft, some of which are more troop transports and not capable of airdropping cargo. Even adding in a further 1000 or so tactical class airlifters such as the C-130 I'm not sure they could do it. The US military is an awesome machine but they don't have infinite resources and capability. Even the fliers in the supplies fits, since I seem to remember us doing a similar thing in places like Somalia. So it could be that the Russians/Chinese are helping run supplies in the west and the Europeans are helping in the east. But thats just my take, I could easily be wrong. |
Well, I would tend to think you're right on that in that most NATO nations depend on the United States Airforce for their heavy lift capability. My guess is that if any enemy was smart enough to hit the United States they did some kind of damage to our NATO friends and our bases overseas. |
Call it a MIG-21/J-7 instead of a MIG-19 then. The Chinese were still developing new variations of the MIG-21 as of the mid 1980's. They've also produced the J-8 which is essentially an enlarged twin engine MIG-21. |
