Well, I also thought that blowing up the bridge was a stupid idea. I think they should have left some junked cars on the bridge as a barrier. Make it so you have to zig zag around the cars to slow down any traffic heading over the bridge. Maybe even build some kind of moveable barricade. I had a couple of different thoughts about the Ravenwood guys. Part of me says Hawkins should have capped the leader as well as the sniper. If they really are a rogue band of thugs taking out the leader might take care of the problem. On the other hand, if he really is acting with legitimate orders killing him might bring a large response. There should be big signs on the roads into town saying something like this. Entering Jericho Township (city, county?) Entry by Permission Only. Send one unarmed representative from your group up the road to discuss terms for entry or passage through the town. Have another sign a couple of hundred yards down the road instructing the representative to stop and wait. The sentries can deal with him and then contact the mayor to assess the situation. |
I loved Hawkins doing that. Would you want to be known to have some suppressed weapon? I'd want to have the most common rifle like everyone else. To mainly keep low profile. Sorry but in TSHTF, I want to blend in with everyone else, not stick out by having something special or armed to the teeth. There were 4 M4's inside that case - I sure wouldn't want to hand out those carbines to people A) I don't know, B) People who probably don't know how to use them and C) Stuff that my family would use... |

Huh? Even if he was in for 5 years or 14 years (17-31), that is plenty of time learn, especially if he was doing work in Iraq, as was insinuated in the hospital episode. Jake is holding back how much he knows, he won't even tell anyone where he's been, much less what he's been doing. |

My guess is Vietnam vet, and it's not an SP1 as someone stated earlier, but rather an AR-15 A1, as it has a forward assist and a magazine fence. |

BS - he got his ass handed to him in every fight he has been in. And against common thug. He doesnt have the right mentality for Spec Ops. IMO. SpecOps are tru 1%'ers. HE wouldve been able to work on an ambush or something else. Atleast he was against blowing up the bridge in the end. Him being a contractor is one thing, but to think he was anything more is ridiculous. He may have been in the military and possibly washed out of some kinda SpecOp training, but I think ppl are putting too much into Jake and his past. Obviously he ran away from some kinda situation in Jericho in the first place. |
I know some guys that were prior SF, that doesnt make them super man. Infact you would never know they were SF... This is not to say, I think he is SF anymore... Contractor that got involved a lil maybe.... Operator no.... As far as the reason he has left Jericho in the first place was because he was with that chicks brother when he was killed. Hence the reason she does not like him all to much.... Except appaerently in her dreams...  (I'll Hand myself if they pull another episode like that out of theyre ass again...)I think Jake left Jericho, got involved in some other criminal mischief somewhere else. Someone found him and took him under thier wing perhaps to OIl truck driving school for KBR where he got to travel the world to mysterious countries and got to make things happen from time to time because he knew a couple of things that would otherwise be useless outside of a SHTF Situation.... Orrrrrr, something like that.....

WTF are you talking about? Where did I say that? I said that the term "Serving your country" to me implies service in the military. Former .mil in PMCs did serve their country in that way and are now working as contractors. Are you just looking for something to be wrong? |

The action at the bridge should have been clear and decisive. To quote" what happens when you scare off a rat?????? It comes back!" Threats need to dealt with not pushed away. The bridge is a natural choke point, the defenders had the ideal position from a defensive posture, if an ambush is properly set up and executed. But anyway, while the show is a good example of what not to do, it's better than Dancing with the Stars or Amazing Race or Survivor or ........ BTW, If Jake is a SF guy he sure fights like a bitch. mm |
they haven't established much about his recent past. still a "big mystery" with some clues. evidently only Hawkins has a clue about where he's been/what he's done, and Jake has given different explanations to different people, largely letting people assume what they want about where he's been and what he's been doing. |

It is amusing how CBS wrote in a blatently politically correct scene--and probably saved some audience members (or at least prevented a racist undertone from forming)--by having the black survivor (Robert Hawkins) kill the black contractor (sniper in the 5-ton).

Read the Red. YOU said that as a contractor you (meaning others who you don't know) are serving their company first and foremost. I don't think you ought to say that about these people. I also think you are dead wrong. I don't think that most people who have served their country in an all volunteer military are the kind of people who will stop being committed to their country first and foremost because they have taken a job with a company that is hired to support their company. Since YOU said that these contractors are serving their company first and foremost, YOU have implied they have put their employment by a company above their citizenship with America. (While you have ignored that the government of America is paying the company to support America and the employees of said company are working to support the company's efforts in supporting America.) So I ask you again, by taking a job with a company that is being paid by the government of America to support the government's war efforts, has a person become a citizen of the company they work for and renounced their citizenship to America? I think it is preposterous to say that those who work for a company supporting America's war efforts and laying their lives on the line are not serving America. I dare you to go to the funeral of a contractor who died carrying out his job and say he didn't serve America because his paycheck went through a company's hands before they reached the contractor. Did the contractor die serving his company or did he die serving his country? If these contractors suddenly started working for Iran or North Korea, you might have a point. Personally, I think they would quit if asked to do so. Being a contractor gives many people the ability to serve their country without being in the military. This gives them a few choices they don't have in the military like being able to quit. But, I don't think you ought to accuse people who take on a job their country is paying them to do as somehow being more loyal to their company than their country. |
Once again, if you haven't noticed, we're done with the contractor debate here. For the record, I never said anyone forfeited their citizenship, which is what you implied earlier. If you disagree with my opinion, you are free to do so, of course. Go try to pick a fight somewhere else. |

If it were not for the lack of patriotism among the residents of Jericho, there would have been long rows of prior service Soldiers/Sailors/Airmen on that bridge and beyond it, standing tall against the “security guards” pretending to work for fema. That town does not deserve to survive if it's made up of apathy and draft dodgers. And WTF is with this twisting the word "contractor" around? It's just as bad as using "operator" to describe Soldiers, SF, SEALS, or miscellaneous mercenaries for hire interchangeably. It is not a good move. It blurs the good guys with bad and I don’t like it. |
Good point. My GF's uncle was a contractor in Iraq who helped service tanks and APCs and he was a lifer career Army retired. |
If he was active Duty SEAL or SF he would be busting his ass right now to get back to his team or unit ASAP. That probably would have made for a better show...him having to make his way across the US in various states of Chaos to make it to his unit. Jake probably worked for Green Peace, or was a Den Mother in the Cub Scouts. |
I'm not really all that much impressed with Jake either. Hawkins is the most interesting character I have scene on TV in a long time. My favorite scene was when he taught his daughter how to shoot for self defense. After all the stupid shows denigrating self defense, I couldn't believe that I was actually seeing a father teaching a daughter how to shoot a pistol in order to defend her family. And they even acted just like real families act when their dad teaches them how to shoot. Wow, maybe more families will see that and decide its time to learn how to defend themselves. |

Ok time for a What-If Question related to the last week's episode. Ok suppose you were living in Jericho at the time of the event. You've chosen to remain 'under the radar' as it were up to the Ravenwood situation. You go to help the men at the bridge... The Questions are: 1) Which weapon (in your current inventory - this is not a 'dream what if') do you take - AND WHY? 2) Do you go on the bridge when asked to - why or why not? What reason do you give for not 'being with the boys' on the bridge? 3) Do you setup any SOP/plans with Jake about the situation? What are they? 4) Anything else? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My answers. 1) I'd take my 6.8 Recce. While it's not 'sheepleflauge' nor is it normally my 'primary' rifle it's my most accurate rifle/ammo combo with plenty of medium to long range capability. I'd also have my magazines loaded up with my 110gr VMAX handloads. 2) I would not be on the bridge, but on the hillside next to the bridge (similar to what Hawkins did). I'd be point-blank honest with them. Sitting grouped up on the bridge is aksing to die, By being to one side I can overwatch the bridge, take advatnage of my extended range, and not be subject to the same supressive fire those on the bridge WILL receive. 3) I'd try to set up the following plans (assume no FRSes survived the EMP). a) in the event Ravenwood starts shooting I try to take out the leader b) in the event the Jericho guys start shooting I engage targets of opportunity with concentration on crew served weapons or marksmen. 4) I'd set up a target on the other otherside - with the help of a spotter make sure my rifle is dialed in for the far side of the bridge. I'd also dig in at least a hasty fighting position to shoot from. |

No, because they are a bunch of idiots with no plan besides a welcoming party. Unless they are planning on parlaying, no one should be on the bridge, and the bridge should be barricaded. Rather than wiring the whole bridge, they should've wired IEDs behind the barricades so they couldn't be used for cover in the event of a firefight. The Ravenwood guys have passing familiarity with CQB tactics and full auto weapons. The towns sheeple do not, so it's best not to get into a close quarters engagement. Distance, cover, and concealment are the order of the day. Since they are "rogues", they should've been ambushed without warning, Bonnie & Clyde style. |
Good minds think alike.  Pretty much spot on with what I'd do point for point. I am in the process of doing my 6.8 RECCE "type" carbine now. Until I get it finished, I'd use my 16" Sabre AR with its Aimpoint and Aimpoint magnifier, and some 75gr TAP or 77 gr Black hills in the primary mag, FMJ in the reloads. This is however one of the areas where I think a 6.8 really is a good weapon. The only two things I would have to ask myself in the situation, would be how many we expected to face, and what kind of vehicles they had. The answer to those two questions could possibly cause me to choose my FAL or my 700 LTR. |

Just wanted to interject a few thoughts here about the bridge that I have been thinking about, in case any of you ever find yourselves in a similar situation. A bridge such as this is a vital structure since it is a key entry/exit point for the town. Something like this you always want to SECURE & CONTROL first and foremost. You need to have some kind of manned fortification and blockade, similar to what they have already done on the show. Cars, sandbags, logs, etc. Anything that is going to provide COVER for someone to man it 24/7. The key word here is COVER. Ideally something that will stop multiple .50 caliber rounds, but as strong as you can make it. There also needs to be the ability to physically prevent unwanted vehicle travel across it, but moveable at the same time to allow wanted traffic/travel. It would also be a good idea to set up several improvised, and concealed, fighting positions on one flank of the road approaching the bridge so as to create a typical L shaped ambush/kill zone that could be manned if needed. Also, an early warning/observation post a few miles down the road is a good idea as they did in the show. It must be made clear to anyone manning that post though, the importance of staying hidden/concealed, and awake/alert. If you had access to explosives, as they did in this case, I would utilize them in two ways. First, I would establish some improvised claymores, mines, and/or IEDs along the ambush/kill zone. Take note of their blast direction however so as to not endanger you guys along the L. Second, I would use some of the explosives on the bridge itself. This would be to destroy/disable the bridge as an absolute last ditch measure if it simply could not be held. Just some thoughts I wanted to put down while I was thinking about it. Overall they did a pretty good job of this in the show. On a related note, when the Ravenwood guys showed up the first time, I would have held fire to see what they had to say, and what their intentions were. However, once the bullets started flying, they made a big mistake in letting them leave. Once they left, I would have most certainly initiated an ambush when they returned with zero discourse, especially based on the knowledge that they have from the trip into the other town, and Ravenwoods statements during their first visit to the bridge. As always, this is worth what you paid for it, and YMMV. |

Man... I am SO glad that CBS put all the episodes online. I did a Jericho marathon at the office and home yesterday. Documented charts while watching the episodes at the office and the kids were nice enough to let Daddy watch them at home without disturbing me. Now... Weapon would be my 16" AR, because I'm good with it, and I have the most ammo for it. I would try to talk everyone into and ambush a few hundred yards before the bridge. Set off an IED and start shooting till they all were dead. It would be great to have 1 or 2 "snipers" at a distance to help keep them pinned down. That bridge is to important to destroy. Letting the Ravenwood guys live is a bad idea. They WILL be back, and probably from an indirect rout. They should have never been let to leave the first time. Jeremy |
After my simulations, I'm gonna have to recommend some command detonated bomb(s) on the road, snipers on the town side of the bridge, and L-ambush with fighting positions. A fallback line on the town side of the bridge would be nice as well. I'd bring my AR-15 with USP45 as a sidearm, as they're what I've got and train with. I'd probably be in one of the L-ambush fighting positions or on the bridge. Cause I'm not as well equipped/trained to be a sniper. Plus the guys will obviously need some leadership. I'm willing to stand my ground and fight it out. They say men are like rope, pushing doesn't work, you have to pull. That said, I'm gonna have to get into the whole precision rifle thing and get myself a FAL too  |
1) A Scope FAL or other scoped .30 cal. An AR with a Red Dot (maybe not after an EMP) in reserve or if the action moves within fragmentation range of .223. Yes two rifles. 2) I'd setup on the far side of the bridge for clear shots on the backs of the bad guys. Bigger targets that way. I'd work better alone than with that group anyway. 3) Jake's a flake. I want nothing to do with that leadership structure until Darwin rearranges things. 4) I'd try to bring the Doc and Nurse, or at least try to set up an aid station for those needing medical attention after the firefight. At least get Doc out of the bar before he's too drunk to help. ETA: I forgot that both rifles would have suppressors. You did say I could bring stuff I already had in the safe.

Yep. Or at least get the doc and nurse to the town's medical facility ready to go... and have some sort of 'ambulance' on hand. To get casualities evacuated as quickly as possible. A functioning pickup truck would probably do. |

Yeah I have to say the towns peoples reaction by setting up en masse behind the vehicle barricade was assinine. That first volley from the Ravenwood guys would have killedor wounded half of them in a real situation. Important note: Cars do not stop bullets. Engine blocks, differentials and axles do, but car bodies do not. From some of your guy's great suggestions I think stocking up on a few hundred empty sandbag bundles might not be a bad idea Great call on the medical backup...hand out tourniquets cause when it gets crazy the ones that have their wits about them can tie off their own injuries.
