I found a copy for $9.95 and it was sitting in my cart. Apparently some copies are collectable, those were the expensive ones. I'm glad I was shopping around for some other stuff and hadn't hit order yet.

So thanks from me as well

I found this and read it a few years ago after I bought my plate carrier.  I went hiking and shooting with it in the mountains around me and thought it was a terrible idea.

Doing some reading about combat weights and loads I started re-thinking how I purchased stuff, now I just want a small chest rig, water on the back and possibly a belt.  And I also got a lot stronger, being strong helped a lot more than cardio.

I also read some of the guerrilla warfare stuff from Mao and others.  one thing that was specifically stated was that at no time should a guerrilla fighter be given 'enough' ammo, you want them to shoot and run.  They need to not have a bunch of ammo to give them the idea it's ok to stand and fight and they need to be light and nimble to quickly get away, preferably to blend in and disappear in a crowd.

When I started with the Battle Buddy stuff all of a month ago it was my full intent that my load would ultimately include armor. After hiking a total of 21 miles with a 45lbs. pack I'm not sold on that anymore. I'll probably do some hikes with armor and a load just to get it sorted, but it goes back to what was said earlier in the thread- "do I need this?"

In 99% of situations I can think of that 20lbs. of load could be put to much better use.

To be fair, most of us have multiple rifles.  My armor cost about the same as a single budget AR with an aimpoint on it, and weights a total of 10lbs.  It will stop armor piercing incendiary as stand along plates that weigh less than 4.5lbs each.

It sucks hiking with armor on when you already have a bunch of weight on your back.  While I have not personally been shot, having seen other people shot it seems to me that it would suck worse to be shot without armor than to hike with armor and a pack.

That said, just because you have the armor doesn't mean you always have to wear it- and in theory if you are going somewhere you might need armor while wearing a pack, you'll probably be dropping your pack somewhere along the way prior to getting into a fight. All of this is, of course, situation dependent.  There is a reason the hikes do not require armor.

Yeah, lighter plates would help, especially considering I'm wearing BALCS soft armor underneath them. Seemed like a nice, versatile setup until I threw a heavy pack into the mix. What I really need is another carrier aimed at shaving weight. Sadly, my budget is not unlimited, but that's now on the list.

In the meantime, I'll train with what I have. In the very unlikely event that I need to get somewhere on my feet in armor and with a pack, my goal is to be mentally and physically prepared to do so. But I also want to put together a pack that puts that load to better use for the more likely scenarios. Starting as I am with pretty much zero experience, I'm just feeling my way along, I appreciate your input.

I ditch the armor, save the weight, and just carry a small bag of dirt to rub onto the wound.

I joined my first FLBB hike in Orlando this past weekend.

I hiked weightless as I am fat and old.  Also, our only packs around the house are frameless.

Since I'm starting from square one, I settled on this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015TNL00G/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The pack arrived today. Overall, happy with my purchase.  The frame has a few scrapes, but the pack looks new or unused.  No stink.  Not dirty.  I consider it a good value for getting started.

That's what I eventually settled on.  I'm very happy with the pack.  Rides perfect with the hip belt and the wide should straps make a ton of different.

I'm using sandbags (mostly) for weight.  I had been using my Tensing hunting pack with all my gear loaded up, but honestly, for carrying weight, the MOLLE II frame works better for me.

EDIT: And good on you for getting out.  Everyone starts somewhere....I'm fattish and oldish....

You're absolutely right - we all start from somewhere!

The man who can hike 100 miles started with...one step

We all have a start, it's the journey and the goal that defines us.  Good for you and all who want to make themselves better, meet and share fellowship with like minded people!

Some do. Mine are stand alone through 7.62 API.

There are some similar to mine slightly cheaper that don't require backers for M855, but do for the API.

Just please remember and reinforce before hikes and other official activities that Battle Buddy hikes are wholly not political, but what you do before or after is on you and not APC sanctioned.

Thank you. I even ask people to remove VCDL stuff.

We walk a fine line, plenty of people believe our mere premise is political enough.

Central KY finished our first hike today. Attendees were myself, @BOOST, and @Overkill777. BOOST has completed his third rated hike and is now third class.

All of us completed 6+ miles under the time limit with 35+ lb packs and rifles.

He will be running a hike in Louisville next weekend. Anyone in the area should attend.

That hill in the picture was some good fun. Glad we tacked that on in addition to the 6 mile ruck.

My favorite was the 45-degree incline on baseball-sized gravel that we climbed right at about the 5.75 mile mark. Whose bright idea was it to do the second lap in the opposite direction so we ended up with that gut check right at the end, anyway?!

It’s also a fantastic experience when the peeps you hike with get together to shoot stuff.

Thanks to ctnsupra1 for coordinating the shoot today.

200, 300, 400, 500 yds was fun.

Treasure valley battle buddies getting on the board with our first hike with 3 people. Today's ruck was a success. @calicontractor @bushamster21 and I made a 6.4 mile loop in 1 hour and 46 minutes. Weather started off pretty awful but cleared up shortly after hitting the path, and didn't start up again until almost to the parking lot.

Our first ruck in Louisville is complete. Temperature was down in the 30s and it rained on us for about 50% of the hike yesterday. Good times, and we completed 6.5 miles in 1 hour and 52 minutes. While this was the first hike at this location, the majority of the participants have now qualified for the Third Class rating.

Not to minimize the precautions each man needs to take to keep his family safe, but I think stuff like these rucks are exactly what our society needs. It brings people together - preferably during the good times - to harden our resolve, so that we know who in our communities we can depend on when things go bad.

As I explained it to the wife of one of my close friends the other day:  “I think people are doing this all around the country because we all need at least 10 numbers in our phone contacts that we can call when things go bad. Likewise, I want people to know they can depend on me to be both capable and resourceful, if they ever need to ask me for help.”

People try to tie this to a militia (as if it’s a dirty word), but I think once the networks are really built out, there is so much potential for things like community projects, integration with Disaster & Emergency Services, etc..

Amen to all of that.

Last week I found out I had to move my daughter out of college on short notice, I had three battle buddies I had known for six weeks asking how they could help and offering to bring extra vehicles for the move. It wasn't necessary as she's renting a furnished apartment and what she actually owns fits in a car load or two, but I was immediately struck by the fact that these are the type of people I want to associate with.

Here's to good people getting together and doing good things.

Boost and redbirdxx nailed it with both of those posts.  Great things are happening.

For the record, I don’t think anyone bailed out of our hike due to concerns about the virus.  I got called into work to build some emergency corona medical infrastructure.  Another guy had to stay home because his wife is under orders not to come to work if she or anyone in her household travels outside of their county.  I hated to miss the hike but it’s good to be part of the team that people call when they need stuff done right now, and done right.  Plus, the pay is pretty good on a Sunday

Bravo to everyone who got out and made things happen this weekend.
