This is the pistol that Muammar Gaddafi had on him at the time of his capture. Does anyone know what kind of pistol this is? I know that it is custom made and inlaid with gold. But I am wondering what kind of pistol that it is. To my untrained eye; it looks like some sort of variant of a 1911.

Good question. Not totally sure.

Looks more like a Browning Hi-Power variant than a 1911. Libya reportedly used some FN weapons; I saw a picture of a rebel using a captured F2000.

Edit: Beat to it.

It's a sad state of affairs when a gun owner doesn't recognize a Browning Hi-Power.

Browning High Power, no doubt about it.

Saddam Hussein had one too.

My high power is my favorite and most trusted handgun.

And, the choice of dictators everywhere, it appears.

Hi-Powers are great guns, I own four, but their trigger usually needs work.

This is true. I took a class with a BHP (not a golden one, either) and a couple of people asked me what kind of gun that was. Not only is it indicative of how plastic guns are taking over the planet, it also makes me feel like a complete dinosaur. That's ok - I will keep on practicing with and savoring this classic and very useful firearm.

Well at least the OP now knows what it is. Not everyone knows each pistol type by sight. Or have been into our hobby as long as others there is always something to learn.

Still Gadhafi HAD a pretty slick looking BHP

Looks like everyone has bashed the OP enough...

Hi Power
Grand Puissance
GP-35
P-35

Anyway, does anyone know if that's a legit FN or if it's just a clone? I don't see any markings besides the serial, but I don't know GP-35's well enough to tell.

The sadder part is the stories I read were identifying it as a 1911.

No, I'm not sure we have bashed him enough . . .

If you blow up the photo he posted, it appears to say "Made in Belgium" on the side.

The serial appears to be 511MPXXXXX which makes it an '08 model. The slide does say Made in Belgium.

Is that the loaded chamber indicator with somebodies finger on the trigger and a hand over the muzzle?

That's the external extractor - introduced sometime in the 50s. While the display of gun safety in that picture is non-existent, the BHP can't be loaded with the hammer down unless one were to drop the hammer on a loaded chamber. However, the BHP does have a firing pin block so it would also be "safe".

So does USA only get the "Assembled in Portugal ones?" now?

Doesn't know a BHP.....

In all fairness, a BHP looks slightly different when gold plated and diamond encrusted.

And it's good to see the world is back in sync. Anytime an Arab is handling a gun they have to be doing so in as unsafe manner as possible, I believe it's in the Koran or some shit.

At the risk of humiliation, I was not entirely sure what it was either. Now I have only been shooting now for about 3 years so I am fairly new. While I have seen BHP before, it took me a few to realize what it was.

Alas, we live in the era of the plastic pistol. The old BHP has no recognition with today's young.
Funny, I don't think the Midway Gun Stories ran anything yet on the BHP.
Ya know, Midway should do sumpin on the "Guns of the Crazy Dictatorz." You know, Hitler's piece, Tojo, DeGaul, etc.
It can't be the 45 or the AR every week! geez.
The BHP with all the jewels and the super finish did match the man's outfit. Well played. Just my 0.02

Some of the rebels reported he was shot in the head with a 9mm, he was carrying a 9mm Browning Hi-Power at the time of his capture......hmmm......

How can somebody not recognize the most widespread pistol in the world?
Link Posted: 10/22/2011 5:22:06 AM EDT
So the OP didn't know what a Hi Power is.

I'll really feel old when some kid can't identify a Glock 17.
Link Posted: 10/22/2011 5:28:05 AM EDT
Most gun owners that 35+ know what a BHP is. Those that are younger I can see not knowing what it is. To many "wonder" 9s on the market to know what a relic wonder 9 is.

Mine was just fine.

Yours makes it unknown as to which side you are referring and reminds me of what a politician's response would be in efforts to keep both sides 'happy'...

I understand that the ignorance referrence isn't necessarily a negative. For instance, you could have meant: "He honestly didn't know because he hadn't seen it before".

Edited for grammar... from "politicians" to "politician's"...
