Who has one and do you like it? How reliable is it? I had a friend who got one when they first came out and he said it stove piped a lot. Although in the posts I have read lately it seems that is not the norm and they are very relable. What is the truth?

Geghis,
I have a model 21 that I have owned for about 10yrs. now.  Love it!  However.......
I did my homework and settled on a Glock,  also settled on .45ACP - But did not do my homework on the Glock .45 (translation - it is HUGE!!!!)  I could shoot it well though, and got used to it.  Concealment was a completly diff. issue.  There are people who can conceal one, but not most of us.  Winter time in Utah sure, but a nice hot Aug. day - not likely.

Anyway after getting my 23 I noticed the grip diff.  Sent the 21 to Robar for a grip reduction and it is now much better.

This is my dedicated home defense and truck pistol not a carry gun (always have more than one)High
The only thing I would like diff. is a newer model with the light rails.  Oh well.

Oh yeah, the only malfunctions I have had with my Glocks (personal and duty issued) were from bad primers, bad reloads, and the laqured primers on some ammo (wolf ect.)  The laquer gets into the firing pin channel and slows the striker enough to cause a "light strike" on the primer.  A through break down and cleaning will take care of that.

I had a G21.  I made the mistake of selling it to pay for a wedding reception hall.  But that's another story...

I loved my 21.  I wish it had been a compensated model, and when I buy another in a couple of months, that's what I'll be getting (LOVED my 19C).

As Contractor said, if you haven't held one before, make sure you try before you buy.  They've got quite a large grip - perfect for guys like me with bigger hands, but hell on the smaller guys.  I shot more accurately with my 21 than any of the Glocks I've fired - I attribute it to the larger, better fit of the grip.  Could ping a 6" plate at 100 yards all day long (admittedly from a sitting, rested position).

I never had a single issue in my 21, or any of my glocks with ammo.  The only thing I ever put through it was Federal ammo though - I tend to stick with what I know.  Being a poorer fella, I probably only put ~1000 rnds through her, but she held up nicely.  Another nice thing about the larger model, it seemed easier to clean than my other glocks.

The extended slide and mag release is an absolutely necessity with the 21, just because of it's size.

Good luck!

Joe

My G21 is my 5th Glock and my favorite by a long shot.
I have big hands and the G21 fits me like a custom made pistol.
I purchased it used, it's 11 years old and has fired thousands of rounds.
A local gun shop recently had a "Glock Day" - I took mine in for a free inspection by
the Glock rep. He found the ejector arm thing was a little bent and replaced it free.
Other than that, he said it was perfect.

It has never given me a problem - I doubt it ever will

My new 21 has been running fine. Approx 500 rounds through it so far with no issues. And yes, I carry it just fine.

Great pistol if you don't mind the large grip. Very hard to conceal without a jacket on.

I've owned 4 G21s over the last 8 years, and they all shoot very well.   I'm a 1911 lover, but my employment dictates that I carry a Glock.   I've come to appreciate Glocks as some of the best tools out there.  My 21s never malfunction, deliver acceptable accuracy, are easy to shoot, have low recoil, and I can live with the trigger.  Mine all have grip reductions, which makes a big difference to me.

My current duty weapon is 3 years old, and has around 5,000 rounds through it.  It shoots well clean or dirty, dry or oiled, and has only the slightest bit of finish wear.

My Dad has one and I would love it except for the larger grip over my G19.  My hands are just too small to shoot it comfortably.

Great gun, if concealment is an issue, get a Glock 30.

It was a timelss debate...Hi-Cap 9mm or .45?  Now I have the best of both worlds.  I bought it during the ban and my opinion was "if it's got to be only ten rounds they're going to be .45!"  Now I'm slowly adding 13 rounders I love mine, had it for a few years.  Put maybe three thousand rounds through it and never had a jam.  It was hard switching from 1911s (what my dad shot and what I shot in the Army) because of the grip angle and the size of the pistol grip, but now I shot it decent.

Got one in January.  1000 or so rounds through it.  ZERO problems.  I have average sized hands and have no problem with the grip size.  It be hard to carry it concealed unless you live in Fargo.  Every time you pull the trigger it will make a nice big hole about 9/20ths of an inch in size exactly where you want it. I also recomend a AA conversion.  Smaller holes but they cost less make.  Excellent training aid.

I own two G21's.  One's in my youngest son's possession; the other is one of my range Glocks.  The range Glock is equipped with adjustable Meps, as I experiment a lot with caliber conversions, lots of different loads, etc.  I enjoy shooting my G21 more than my 70 Series Gold Cups.  Have run tens of thousands of rounds through G21's, having blown up only one.

Just remember, everyone is different. I can carry a 21 and 2 spare mags concealed in nothing but a t-shirt and shorts. Some people can do it, others cant. I find that a big part of it is how bad one really wants to carry something.

You went to Franklin's Glock Days?  Two of thier folks were in the Armorer's course today.  They are a good store, but if you like evil black rifles, try Clyde's Armory www.policeguns.com  They have a lot of department turn in weapons of all shapes and sizes.  Glad to hear you only had an issue with your ejector.  If you ever have problems with your pistol, call the factory and the Tech Reps will treat you good.

I bought my original G21 (the one I blew up), my Bushy Shorty, Browning safe, varmint rifles, etc., etc., from Mark Franklin.  He's always done right by me.

+1... I have too.  I've also concealed a full-size USP .45 and 2 spares under a t-shirt.

My cousin, bought stuff from Mr. Franklin when he was selling out of his basement off Prince Ave. by the navy school.  I went over there regularly when I lived in Athens and I found them to be of the "if ya can't kill deer with it, what good is it" mindset.  Andrew Clyde (owner of Clyde's armory) is a standup guy, he is a National Guardsman that had done a tour in Iraq recently.  I bought my M590A1 from Clyde when I was there in Athens but I always went to Franklin's for hunting/target shooting needs.  The employees at Franklin's always seemed unavailable or busy when I needed a hand.

I have one. If you like Glocks, it's a decent gun. Make sure the grip angle and girth are acceptable to you before you buy. The plastic sights break and the night sights have misaligned dots. Buy Heinies or Novaks. The trigger is heavy but can be fixed. even the 3.5# factory connector doesn't make it livable for me. Recoil is very manageable, more so than a Glock 22 in .40, IMHO.

As for concealability, it can be done.

Yep, it was Franklins.
The factory rep was a Mr. Gonzales - He was very helpful and said the same about calling the factory in Smyrna if I needed anything.
As for Clyde's... What a great store! Andrew has been taking good care of me for a few years now.
I purchased my SAGE EBR stock from Clyde's

Look here:

Bigbore's G21 Torture Test

I've had my G21 for over ten years without a failure.  (Though I must admit I've handled mine with a bit more care than Steve. )

Kinda hard to conceal, even on my XXXL body.

The "original" Mr. Franklin was Clarence. I've dealt with his son, Mark, who took over the business (with this sister) when Clarence died.  The reason I started doing business with Franklin's was that my oldest son knew Mark socially, when son was a student at UGA.  I've always dealt directly with Mark, so the attitude of the employees hasn't affected me.  I have heard similar complaints, though, from others on other boards, about the customer service.

WOW! Thanks for all the info guys. I have looked at them in the store and they fit my hand O.K. besides I like big guns. It will not be a concealment firearm but it will be a range gun as all of mine are and it will be on my nightstand, camping or in my truck. Thirteen rounds of .45acp is just to much to pass up. It will not realy be a carry gun. I carry a glock 19 or a steyer s40. The s-40 is the perfect size for me to carry. I can not stand a pistol that will not fill up my hand. I do not have my pinky hanging out when I drink tea and I do not want it hanging out when I am holding a firearm. You guys have me sold on the 21 I just have to decide ported or non-ported. Money is not the issue but I do not want to be blinded if I had to shoot it inside in low light conditions.
3/16/2005 7:01:31 AM EDT
[#23]
For low-ligt conditions, the 21C performs quite well.  Using commercial "duty ammo" like police use actually has low-flash powder and wouldn't be a  bad carry round either.  Now FMJ like Winchester White Box could give you some pretty substantial flash from the ports.  I will try to give a 21C a shot in the range today with the lights out and I'll get back to you.  Now if the 21 will be your everyday carry piece I would go with the non-ported for a few reasons, less stuff to get into your barrel or get stuck between the barrel ports and the slide ports.  Also, if you have to shoot from a close-in position, you could have some of the blast from the ports in your face or hitting where you don't want it to.  For a recreational shooter/competition shooter, I wouldnt see going with a 21C to be a potential liability but for CCW, I'd go with the regular 21.

Just my .02

Thanks wing nut. I would not carry it every day but I do not buy fire arms strictly for target or competition even if that is what I would primarily use it for (Except .22s and c&r).  Although how bad would the flash get me if I drew and shot from the waist if I was using the duty ammo with low flash powder?
3/17/2005 5:54:28 AM EDT
[#25]
Shouldn't be too bad, but that would be one thing possible to go wrong.  Also, the reduction in muzzle flip is minimal unless you are doing rapid shots.  The G21 is such a large frame handgun that you have ample leverage on the muzzle flip especially if you grip high on the frame.  I ran a mag through a 21 yesterday and found it to be quite controllable during rapid fire without the porting.
3/17/2005 11:13:58 AM EDT
[#26]
Thanks for the info. So now I wonder if the porting is worth the extra cashola$$$.
3/29/2005 8:11:49 PM EDT
[#27]
Go with the ports (21C), you can always add another non-ported (factory, aftermarket, match, etc.)
barrel if you so choose, but porting a standard slide (and barrel) would less cost efficient.

Ive got a 21 with probably about 10,000 rounds through it since I bought it.  I haven't shot my Springfield 1911 much since I bought the G-21.  No problems, love it.  Very accurate and the smoothest, softest recoiling 45 I've owned.  I load my own, only 230 FMJ's and using a light charge of Hodgdon Titegroup, recoil is even softer than with factory loads.  Not that I'm a recoil wuss, but its nice to shoot a gun a whole lot and not have it beat you up.  I can carry it under a coat or large shirt but not well.  Its not a summer time gun.  I have a G-26 for that.  Great gun at the range, for home defense, or SHTF gun.  Don't see much use for the ports though in a low pressure caliber like the 45 ACP.  To each his own though, get what you like.
