I'd probablly grab the mini 14, something that has better reliablity, and will go bang every time

which one do you like best?

I'll take whats behind curtain number two....every time.

And....what the hell did you do to that 14?
Never saw one look like that?
I am guessing more money in furniture than on the original purchase price?

Well i did till i saw that one

I like a Mini-14 fine for plinking. But it is no comparison to an AR.

I do not currently own a Mini-14 and don't plan to buy one in the future.

ARs for me. I like being able to hit what I shoot at.

I'll take my ak's or ar's anyday over the mini, I had one for about 2 weeks biggest POS i ever owned.

Well, I have one that looks just like this:

...and I love it.

Granted, haven't had a chance to actually SHOOT the damned thing, but I love it.

I have some minor barrel work planned for it in the future. Imagine this:

But without the stock painted black.

Every mini I've shot has felt, shot, and operated horribly. I'd take an AR-15 over the mini14 any day.

I had one.

Couldn't hit the inside of a barn with it.

While I prefer the AR for it's reliability, I still like shooting the Mini 14 that I recieved on my 18th b-day from my father.

Inside 100 yard, it can easily hit a coke can everytime I pull the trigger.

BTW, did your rifle come with the AC556 Flash Hider or did you order that somewhere?

If so, where?

I'd take a mini-14
for $150.00

Its a cool gun, it has the whole sentimental A_Team thing from when I was a kid, but that doesn't justify the price tag when I can grab two Romanian AKs for less than one Mini-14. And the Mini's mag situation isn't all that hot neither.

The OP's "Tactical mini" pic is ugly, but its cool in the same way that its ugly.
I like the short barrel with black stock a bit better maybe. Nice stuff overall... but compared to either an AR or an AK? Nah.

I have been thinking of buying one, i know a guy that one for sale along with 1K of ammo for 400.00

no, I dont own a mini 14 right now, but I was thinking of buying one for ITSHTF since AR's are banned in Cali

I could be mistaken, but the mini in the OP is an AC556 I think.

Can you get an M1A/M14?

If so, do so. In fact, I KNOW you can get the SOCOM M1A. Infinitely better than a Mini, USGI or not.

Depending on the ammo that might not be a bad deal.

I have owned a few through out the years, you could say it was a "stepping stone" to the AR's they are not as bad as folkes make them out to be but on the other hand why bother when the AR's are around.

I had a stainless semi factory folder about 10 years ago that looked similar to the factory one posted above the difference was the the front site sat above the gas block. I have only seen them set up as SMG's I always wondered if it was a prototype or something, neat peice IMO.

I assume that is a "post ban" receiver set into a pre ban factory folder stock? The common ones I have seen have the front site/bayo lug as one piece attached to the barrel. That barrel configuration looks post 94, correct if I am mistaken please.

I ALMOST bought one as a first semi auto, but I went with a New AO M1 Carbine instead. That blew up (on bad ammo) so I parted it out and have recently decided to get an AR instead of a new m1 carbine, they are just too cool.

While I agree it is not particular about ammo that would make an AR go tits up,   I sold mine due to it's wandering zero as soon as the barrel would start to warm up.

Yep, rock en roll.

Does anyone rememeber the Ruger X-GI? It was advertised back in the day but never did make production. It was for all pratical puposes a a Mini 14 in 308. Get it? X-GI? It never made the streets because it could not meet Rugers accuracy standards, imagine. that

No, and I'll never buy a gun from Ruger ever. Mr. Ruger (effectively) gave the go-ahead for the AWB; he's a huge hater of the EBR and any gun that can hold more than 10 rounds for that matter...

I thought it was shelved because they were having severe reliability problems with it.  i could definitely be wrong.

Put the crack pipe down, and back away.

I choose the Ar15 over the mini. I can actualy clean the AR without tools.

Sory for not spell checking

I like the Mini-14 because of the resemblance with the Garand and the M14.  The design is fundamentally good, IMHO, it just wasn't executed very well.

It's a pity that it doesn't perform better.  If it were more accurate and took AR mags, I'd be all over it.

much prefer the mini over ar in ergonomics, the accuracy of the ar is usually better.  not however with the one i have now or the mini30.

you have to return the gun to ruger to get many repairs done, and i have cryoed the barrel and a shimmed the actions to get them shooting 2 moa or less.  cryo will solve the walking rounds.

wish i could get a ak, but am convict of california.

Only for the A-Team value.

Then again, as Ruger doesn't think us mere civilians can handle assault-weapon features like their factory folding stock, my Mini was purchased used.  I will never buy a (new) Ruger product.

Yep, it was in the 1984 Ruger catalog and supposed to be released in '85.

Just sold my mini-14 a couple months ago. Had it for 25 years & rarely used it. Maybe put 1k rounds thru it. Never had much interest in the gun. Wasn't my cup-o-tea.

unfortunately, The Kalif. D.O.C. arms the prison guard towers with the highly inaccurate mini-14 and .38's. I guess the liberals down there don't want the highly valued convicts being actually hit by a round being fired.

I'd take the AR- EVERYTIME

I had a Mini-14 SS Ranch model and really liked it.  Traded it in to get a Garand.  Big mistake.  I should have just dug deeper into my pockets.   It fit me really well and worked flawlessly.  A lot easier to clean too.

Had a couple Mini's. .223 and 7.62.

Went bang everytime, would not group worth a crap with any ammo I ever tried...factory or handloads.

Danny

P.S. I might be biased, have 11 ar's.

minis are alright but I would take a ar or ak over one any day of the week.

mine has been one hundred percent reliable with factory ruger mags and PMI's.

Considering it looks like a AC556 hell yes.

I actaully dig the looks of the SAGE on the mini, and some day whe I've blown enough on AR's I'll get one for my mini.

It's not bias, but fact. I've owned 3 Minis and none would group less than 6-10 inches. I'll rebuild the one Mini I kept when I get my lathe running, but will use one of my 7 ARs when its time to hit the target.

I own one. It doesn't group like my Ar's do but I can hit a man at well over 200 yards somewhere com. On the other hand it has always fired, not one jam in thousands of rounds.

To be honest I wouldn't buy another one.
I also would not hesitate if I had to defend myself with it.
