ABC radio just reported a plane leased to his campaign just augered in.  Apparently no survivors.  No confirmation about whether or not Wellstone was aboard.[shock]
THIS is going to be interesting.
More later...

Shades of Ron Brown???

Yet ANOTHER ingenious way for the Dems to pull a switcheroo on a losing Senate candidate.

Fox has confirmed that Sen. Paul Wellstone died in the plane crash along with 7 other people.  This is truly a terrible thing.  I didn't agree with his politics, but this is just terrible.

Although I would never vote for Wellstone,  I hope the senator is OK.  Press reports are unclear on whether Wellstone was aboard the plane, although he was indeed scheduled to be aboard the plane.

I want the Repubs to win, but not under such a scenario.

In gentler times, this shouldn't be a concern, but for right now, yes, what does this mean for the election?

Is this another 'Carnahan' Scenario, where the Demos can just pick someone to ride the crest of grief into the Senate?

Geez. Is having a Democratic candidate for the Senate die in a plane crash right before the elections going to be a new norm or something?

As much as I hated the guy's politics, I wish the best (under the circumstances) to the family. Just goes to show how te....

Oh, geez.... His FAMILY WAS ABOARD TOO!

Christ! As I was saying as the news came in, just goes to show how tenuous life is...

This gives me an idea--get all the anti-gun assholes together on one plane headed to a big "ban them all" rally someplace and then hit it with shoulder launched missile a la Flight 800.  Now that's what I call government reform!

Edited to say:  "Just kidding"--I would rather beat them politically and wish no harm on anyone.  It wouldn't be poetic justice or anything like that, no no.

Very sad.  I want the Republicans to win, but not in this way.

It's hard to say what will happen to the seat.  The governor of Minnesota can appoint someone to the seat for the very short duration that the seat is left.

hey, even better idea, let's put all the {Jews, blacks, gays, women, other non-white non-jesus worshippers} on on one plane headed to a big "tolerate them all" rally someplace and then hit it with shoulder launched missile a la Flight 800.  Now that's what I call gene pool reform!

Although I didn't, of course, agree with his politics, I did admire him for standing up for what he perceived as right and not even letting party affiliation sway him on most issues.

What is it with Democrats who die just before the election? This year it's Patsy Mink and Wellstone. In 2000 it was Carnahan.

It's never a happy day when people die like this. That said, what a fucking coincidence this is. First, Carnahan in Missouri, then Toricelli, now Wellstone.

How many ways can Democratic candidates who are in trouble get replaced?

Hard to say.  The Democrats may have time to nominate a replacement, who would likely get some sort of sympathy vote.  His bio says that he was married in 1963.  If so, he may have surviving children who have reached the age of thirty, which is required for candidates to the United States Senate.

NOW WHAT?

It really is sad about his family going down too.

Now, having said that...how are the Dems going to handle this?

Less than two weeks to go until election.  There guy was in a nail-biter.  Are we looking at another Carnahan debacle?  Is this going to end up being a positive for the lying, cheating crooked Democratic Pary hacks again?

It would have been great to win fairly...or even lose fairly...but if they use this to win...I'll be SO PISSED OFF! [pissed]

You folks from Minnesota...get out the vote!  Don't let them steal this one too.

Happened to be looking at his website not too long ago (have ties to MN).  One thing I noticed was that Wellstone voted against several gun control bills.  He was farther left than most European socialists, but his voting record was very inconsistent--he was against a lot of big govt. iniatives, but for all the wrong reasons (like they didn't GO FAR ENOUGH).  He was not a bully like Schumer.

Okay, I've met my quota for saying good things about people I don't particularly like.  He was still a part of the "I know what is better for you than you do" crowd.

Frankly...Aside from all the PC "Oh this is such a horrible death" stuff....I remain convinced that Paul Wellstone would have voted to ban my AR, in a heart beat.

I do not pray for the death of such members of our goverment, but I can't truthfully say I'm all that weepy over his passing either.

I don't think Coleman will win. He'll be blamed for Wellstone's death and thrown in prison. You watch.

My take - all the ballots have been printed, which means Wellstone's name will stay on the ballot.

So, people will have the choice of voting for the Repub, or a dead man.  Most will choose the Repub.  But, and this is a big but, if Wellstone somehow wins then Ventura may appoint the Republican anyway.

My only fear is that all the hand-wringing, crying, funeral services, etc. that the Demos will do over the next week will result in more Democrats getting out to vote in sympathy all over the country.

I can hear it now "Do the right thing for Senator Paul - vote democrat!  We need your vote everywhere across the country to make up for this tragedy and so we can keep control of the Senate!"

I would not say I take pleasure in his death...

But then again Paul Wellstone was as close to True Communism as this country has ever produced.

Paul Wellstone would have happily seen every assualt weapon owner on this board either hunted down and killed or in prison. If his wish of disarming the American people ever came to pass....Paul wellstone would have been happy if you or I, were to be killed or spend the rest of your lives behind bars....

So you will pardon me when I say...I'm damned glad he's gone.

Yes, a very good man who was dedicated to the removal of your so-called assault weapons from your possession. Plus any other weapon, to be named at a later date.

That, and that alone, is my measurement of anyone who seeks to disarm the American people.

And the remainder of his politics were, sad to say, much the same - big government knows how to take care of the 'little people.'

The only reason that we know Sen. Wellstone is from his political activities.

His friends and family can grieve for the man, but all we can do is remember the politics of the fellow.

I regret his death, as I regret the news of anyone's death, with the knowledge that it will come to all of us some day.
