Song of the South was made after history was made.

Oh, you are right. History was rewritten in the 90's.

Can you speak for the quality of this product? I have a DVD that a friend burned for me a year ago that seems to be the same thing that they are selling. My DVD has the old cartoons as well as the main film. The quality of my DVD is not as good as my aunts VHS copy of the movie though.

I dunno - but I LOVED it when my dad would read me Uncle Remus. He used to live in Louisianna for a bit - but have picked up a bit of them "dats" and "ders" one needs to read uncle remus.

No, brar bear - not the briar patch!

Speaking of Speedy...does anyone know where to get copies of the un-PC Bugs & friends cartoons? I've got the DVDs that were released not too long ago...but they are only the PC cartoons.

When was the last time you saw a Heckle and Jeckle cartoon? Almost ANY WWII era Bugs Bunny or Three Stooges shorts, or 40's Abbot and Costello movies?

Now that you mention it.

Darn all the fun stuff is being erased from our cultural history.

Funny thing is that when in Mexico a year ago my kids were watching Speedy and Pepe Le pew on Mexican TV. Funny as hell when you have a few two many beers and Speedy is speaking fully in Spanish

Don't forget all the Tom & Jerry's with the kindly African-American woman.

"ThomAAAAAAAAassss! OUT! Oh-Doubleyou-Tee OUT!"

It's been re-dubbed. By a very clear-speaking Phylicia Rashad. The maid now sounds like a corporate attorney.

I have the DVD. You can get the bootleg pretty easy on the internet. Disney still sells the dvd and tape in Asia markets. Its a different format but lots of people are recording it to our fromat and selling it for 15 to 20 bucks a pop.

Its a great movie. I grew up with it and so will my kids and their kids.

A little Song of the South info via Snopes

You can find DVDs on Ebay all the time.(You pay your money and take your chance) I took a chance on a disk from "over there in the East" some time ago just so I'd have it. IIRC the cost was less than $ 20. Luckily the quality was quite good, the only odd thing is the subtitles (if turned on) are in Chinese.

Disney routinely pulls certain movies from circulation to create a demand for the movie til they reissue it. remember how Disney would only re-release a movie only every few years in the pre-video era?

The other factor is that the company may see no commercial demand for that particular movie. I am sure there are many other low-performing Disney movies that are not regularly marketed.

Yep, I saw it with my folks when I was a kid. My Mom wanted me to see it because it was a classic. ( I liked it too )

IIRC the controversy was Uncle Remus was a slave and was portrayed as being a very happy cheerful slave. (That might tend to piss a lot of people off.)

Disney has made a business decision not to release the film to avoid the inevitable boycotts and having to pay off Rainbow -Push types.

That was (apparently) the first movie my Mom took me to when I was toddler.

Read Uncle Remus stories to my kids all the time. Until this thread, I had forgotten all about Song of the South! Shame on me!!! I remember my parents taking me to see it, and now I just gots ta haff me a copy of it sho 'nuff!

I saw it in 81... reckon I was about 11. All of these PC people kill me.

Buggs, Speedy, Peppy, Heckle and Jeckle, Abbott & Costello... It's just a shame. I bought a 4 Best of Abbott & Costello sets cause you never see them on TV anymore.

Just a shame.
