i did basic in 87 and was scared shitless at 17.
But watching them now 28 years later they are annoying as hell.

When I went through IBOLC, we had a British SGM as our company 1SG. That dude said the word "c*nt" more times in the first week of that school than I had ever heard it used in my entire life leading up to that. He loved to abuse LTs.

Some of the stuff he said was pretty funny probably because of his proper sounding accent: "You thought this was going to be easy?!?!? This is the infantry for chrissakes!"
Link Posted: 1/17/2015 1:48:47 AM EST
Ha. Didn't know the Brits were so intense.

I can attest to the ferocity of Marine Corps DIs though. In my experience, they were far more vicious than any video of DIs I've ever seen. When I graduated boot camp, I never wanted to see those evil bastards again.

I don't think you can judge all US drill instructors on Marine Corps DIs though... When we got to Ft Sill for MOS school, we were shocked at how Army Drill Sergeants interacted with their recruits. Every service has their own culture, I guess.

That sounds about right. I've been told British SGM can be vulgar and downright vicious at times.

Between those two examples, gonna go with the Brits on this one.

I don't know about British Drill Sgt's, but about 87% of my American ones were some goofy, weird dudes... Then again, they were all Cav Scouts; that pretty much explains it- everybody there is a bit of a spaceball. Hell, one of my DS's got "fired" mid-cycle and another one was under investigation by the MP's for being a fuckup.

I had maybe 2 Drill Sgt's who were actually intimidating and the rest were just trying too hard. They didn't scare me, but I guess I did respect the job they did.
Link Posted: 1/17/2015 3:14:34 AM EST
Of the DS's in my company, I feared my platoons SDS, respected the other two (one I use as a mentor and email for advice from time to time). In the other platoons, they were mostly annoying. Two I would gladly light on fire then piss on them with kerosene. I have no basis for comparison, though my PG was a Brit who had served previously in the RAF Regiment and his opinion was our DS's loved to smoke us more and the British DS's were masters of the fuck fuck games.

I can say that we were honestly afraid of our Drill Instructors when I went through Recruit Training at MCRD. They liked to play "Yack and Smack". The good old days when you could beat your privates.

The first video is just the lead up to some homo erotic porn. It was creepy.

I don't recalled our Army DS ever actually talking to us. They were yelling at us from day one till the day we graduated (OSUT).

glad I'm out now.

hind sight being a motherfucker, I could never do basic/boot ever again.
I can't stand all that stooopid shit.

it's all a mind game fuck.

know that and you can get through it (the first time)

American DI/TI/DS's are more creative. The Brit lacked creativity but made up for it in his ability to swear and get physical.

Actually a reality TV series. Bad Lads Army. Delinquent yoots were sent to "National Service will do 'em good" type camp to have their delinquency removed by shouty men in green.

The American Drill Instructors didn't impress either. Shaking the table and sounding like 70 a day smokers who wear Canadian Mountie hats is not intimidating.

the Sgt Major from The Wild Geese was pretty impressive!

RSM Sandy Young: Sir! With respect, you can stick the money up your arse that's all I can offer you sir. - I love what I do, I also love these grubby, thickheaded men I trained - you most of all and I expect to be with them and with you because I'm needed. You want to see a REAL revolution? Try and stop me.

RSM Sandy Young: That was LUDICROUS, sir. You're jumping from an aeroplane, not a whorehouse window. Do it again.

RSM Sandy Young: Some of you know me already! Those of you who don't are in for a great, big fuckin' surprise! For those of you who do can expect an infinitely more horrible time than they can remember! Any man here who steps out of line and I will kill stone dead, it will not worry me in the slightest! There are no Queen's regulations here! When I say jump, you ask how high, Do I make myself clear? I want to hear it! Do I make myself clear? RIGHT! On the command Right and Left turn, A and B squads turn to the right, C and D squads turn to the left. SQUADS! Right and Left TURN! Right! Let's drive for our first heart attack shall we!

Having been through Army Infantry Basic Training and AIT, definitely the Americans are more intimidating. Brits simply aren't intimidating when they yell. More amusing than anything. Now, if we're talking a quieter, devious voice? There's just something really creepy and intimidating about a calm, level-headed Brit talking about real bad things.

Is that Army clip a joke? Are they really that nice? The Air Force Drill Sergeants are more like the Marine ones than the Army based on that video.

It wasn't like that at Ft Knox in 89. That clip makes it look like summer camp.

Maybe the summer camp from Meatballs. I assume most summer camps are harder than that.

I know right? If I was there I'd just start laughing at them. If they were to have a problem with that, well, I'd just punch them in the face. No one tells me what to do.
Link Posted: 1/17/2015 9:09:32 AM EST
Not the way I remember it. Drill Sgts. grabbing people and shoving/throwing them off the bus. Foot lockers being dumped upside down on the floor just about the time you had everything matching the diagram. Wall lockers thrown through 2nd story windows (so lucky no one was down below in the dirt). People coming out of the latrine with bruises, split lips, etc. A drill sgt. coming out of an office and grabbing 2 or 3 guys to carry an unconscious trainee back to his bunk. Drill Sgts. yanking the top mattress off the bed frame and dropping it to the floor - with a trainee in/on the mattress. People being forced to put boxing gloves on and fight. Some things worse than that (lucky no one lost an eye or got a broken jaw).

Some Drill Sgts. didn't do a lot of cussing. Some did. All yelled/hollered in your face. I was pretty fortunate. Most of the ones I had at Ft. Jackson and Ft. Polk weren't all that bad. Some in the same company (other platoons) appeared to be pretty bad from what I saw from my relative "safety" of having pretty decent Drill Sgts. who seemed to be there to teach vs. abuse.

Glad I did it once. Wouldn't volunteer to do it again. 1975 is long gone as is the (almost skinny) kid I was then.

The really scary ones are the RASP cadre. Those fuckers were evil.

Worked with both I'd say the Brits have a slightly broader use of foul language other than that a draw.

They weren't supposed to, but they did. The CO even chewed out one of our drills for it. I thought it was pretty pathetic that we were there to learn how to maim and kill people, but it was a no no to say fuck.

They're not supposed to. Mine didn't, and when he did once, he immediately corrected himself to a word similar.

Mine cussed like a motherfucker pretty much everywhere except near the chapel. In front of the 1SG, CO, other drills, the CSM. IIRC, the only person he didn't cuss in front of was the BC.

British people are better at being menacing. I bet even Michael Caine could turn on a scary routine.

The USMC thing is terrifying to a teenage boy away from home for the first time, but how do guys in their mid-20's react to it?

That clip made Air Force basic training look like some high speed shit compared to the Army

(I'm an AF guy, and I was sure as hell never gently spoken to in basic)

Edit to correct my sausage finger spelling.

If I was a Brit the Brit SGT might sound more intimidating because I could understand him, whereas a Brit might not understand a USMC DI, especially one from the deep south.

and vice versa.
